Phil Jackson

January 12th, 1964 - March 19th, 2021

Biography

It is with great shock and sadness that we learn of Phil Jackson's passing on Friday 19 March. Phil was well-known and loved across the life sciences sector for his dedication to innovation, his sense of humour, and refreshingly honest approach to life. He was integral to the forming of MedCity in 2014 and he has been at the heart of all of our achievements over the years. Whether supporting businesses to find the right space, leading on our international missions, or consulting on some of the most important real estate developments in London, you always knew you were in expert hands with Phil.

We have created this online memory page for his colleagues and friends to share messages, stories, photos or videos of your time with Phil.

His family, including wife Milena, daughters Sophia and Alexandra, and stepson Cuba, will have access to these messages which we hope will bring comfort at this sad time.

We have also included a donation link to Stand Up To Racism, which was a cause close to Phil's heart. He was a staunch socialist, anti-racist, and life-long campaigner for social justice.

We will miss him terribly.

We are so sad to learn, belatedly, of Phil's death from the lovely obituary in The Guardian. We knew him many years ago in Toronto, where I (Jill) worked with him at a bookshop called Book City. Apart from the minimum-wage pay it was a dream job, because of the cheap books and fantastic colleagues -- Phil prominent among them. He had a great mind and a quick wit, always a wonderful person to share an intellectual debate or a laugh. To us he was a wise, (slightly) older grad student always willing to engage, offer opinions or a joke, with great humanity and without pretension. We thought of him regularly and always hoped our paths would cross again. It's clear from the comments on here that he touched many people around the world and across the decades.
Our condolences to his friends and loved ones.

I want to pass on my deepest condolences to Milena, Cuba and Sophia and Alexandra.
In the scheme of things I had only gotten to know Phil over the course of the past 2 years, though throughout that time, I could always rely on Phil for solid advice as well as a laugh. He was a fountain of charismatic wisdom that wasn't afraid to speak his mind, and was always happy to lend an ear over a drink.
His legacy will no doubt live on in our work at MedCity, and every time I hear birds chirping away in a garden (from his garden spot on conference calls) or hear The Beatles being sung at Karaoke, I'll think of Phil.

I've attached a photo from our last trip to Japan in 2019, where Phil casually went out of our hotel to have a cigarette during the passing mega typhoon, the photo was seconds after he stood out in the open, taking shelter from the 120mph+ winds

I was saddened to hear the news about Phil. Phil was at the heart of MedCity from the early days and brought his characteristic calm, knowledge, experience and confidence to the new venture. Always willing to help, Phil grew into a greatly respected and warmly remembered member of the Life Sciences community. He will be missed. I knew Phil eons ago, I guess I can say now, in Toronto in the late 80s-mid 90s. For many years, I probably saw Phil at least once a week as he was good friends with my then husband and we were all in the IS together. Later, I remember, Phil visited me in Mexico City. I would no doubt need a thesaurus to describe Phil, but he was essentially just a really great guy and dedicated to making a better world. His death is such a shock and while I have not met Milena and Cuba, and haven't seen Sophia and Alexandra since they were little girls (with their dad on the Bathurst Street car actually), I would like to send you all my most sincere condolences. I am so sorry for your loss.

Getting to know Phil can be defined as gaining years of experience in business life. Phil is the best example of being result-oriented and successful while being calm, humble, humanistic and humorous. The most important thing is the trust he gives.
The consolation left for us is to know that such a person has existed and we shared happy moments with him.

I sat next to Phil since I started working at MedCity in Nov 2017. It was a privilege to work alongside him. He was a great mentor and a soundboard for a lot of ideas and challenges I had working in the industry. I admired his clarity of thinking and communicating and ability to make us see things from a different perspective. He was also a lot of fun to be around and I am sure the MedCity team holds a lot of fun memories from our team meetings, events and Xmas parties. He will be terribly missed by us all.

At BioPartner UK we were privileged to know Phil in the context of preparations for international trade missions and events such as BioJapan, where he tried his best to include all stakeholders and promote both London and the UK. It is a tribute to Phil indeed, that so many respected colleagues have already commented here. I can only echo words and phrases like authentic, brain the size of a planet, strong principles. Thank you to Nivashinee for the reminder of Phil's focus on growth and helping others, and that trademark multicoloured scarf. We will miss him at our upcoming Anglonordic Conference, of which he was a great supporter.

Nivashinee Krishnakumar published a tribute .

I initially wrote this to help me process this unfortunate news a few days ago. But, if I may, I’d like to share it with you all.

This year is a year we have all unfortunately had to become accustomed to death. The end of every individual’s life, was translated to a number, accumulated, and shared in the media. We all got used to waking up to a news notification saying ‘Record-breaking numbers as the UK reports 10,000 additional deaths overnight.’

I wish I could commemorate every individual’s life, but alas, I am unable to. I can only hope that their families and friends will share their stories. Today, I would like to talk about one of these numbers.

The one life I would like to talk about is Phil Jackson.

Every day, as he rocked into the office around 10am, he would plonk his paper Leon takeaway bag on his desk, remove his multicoloured scarf and throw it over the back of his chair, sit down, complain about soooooooomething, and then proceed to extract his breakfast burger from the bag - which was then scrunched up and thrown somewhere. As if this wasn’t enough of an ordeal already, he would then take his sachet of ketchup, smear it all over the burger patty, and noisily eat his meal as he caught up on his emails.

I would take advantage of the the day he didn’t come into the office, Friday, by disinfecting his desk, throwing away all the little ketchup sachets, and knocking all the burger crumbs out of his keyboard; my desk was right next to his, so I took this job very seriously.

Last weekend I re-read a book Phil gave me called 'The Forty Rules of Love'. As I read through it, I felt like I was reading about Phil himself. I could draw so many parallels between him and a character called Shams of Tabriz. Shams was someone who didn't care much for what others thought of his outer appearance and ways, and focused on growth and helping others; he was clear on what his purpose was and didn't let others sway him off his path.

Phil reminds me so much of Shams. He had such a big heart and really was just a cuddly teddy bear inside. Eveeeen though Phil spent more time smoking on the corner of Christopher Street than he did at his desk, you could always count on him. Philip Mark Jackson, at his core, was a genuinely good guy. Full of integrity, humour, and good intentions.

I have so many fond memories with him, ranging from giving him hugs when he didn’t expect (and likely didn’t want) them, taking funny snapchats with him, and coating his desk with wrapping paper on his birthday. One of my favourites though, was my last day at MedCity. Phil came with a bouquet of flowers for me and we went out for drinks with a few other friends. When I went home, I found a rose hidden at the back. He’d even set aside a book to give me, which he’d signed and gave to me a few months later - Elif Shafak, Forty Rules of Love.

When I picture him now, I imagine he is in the heavenly version of the Old King’s Head pub, drinking a pint of beer whilst mentally planning his next trip to BioJapan.

Phil, you were loved by so many and will continue to live on in all our hearts. Your contributions to the life sciences and humanitarian causes will not go forgotten.

Thank you for everything.

Love always,
Pest x

No one has, and no one ever will, enter an office like Action-Jackson. It made me smile and laugh to know that his morning ritual was exquisitely maintained across the pond. And those damn endless ketchup packages... sigh.

My thoughts and deepest condolences to all the people whose lives he touched, and to his wife and children. Milena, he loved you truly, madly, deeply. And while we were so sorry to see him leave us in Toronto, we were so happy he found so much love and happiness with you.

Exactly one year ago, thanks to Phil's encouragement, our Japanese language lesson began.
I had no experience of this, but I started to teach him Japanese via video chat.
At the most, every week, on average every two weeks, I enjoyed the video chat with him.
I truly liked he asked about the Tokyo Olympics with ironic tone.
In the beginning, he could not easily enter the video chat without Milena's help - I found I loved such an insignificant thing.
We were supposed to meet online last Saturday too, but that didn't happen.

There is still a gaping hole in my heart.
Do I have to say rest in peace as I squeeze it out?

This photo was taken at BioJapan 2019 - World Band Live.
I sang Get Back of Beatles with him.

Dearest Milena, Sophia, Alexandra and Cuba,
Since Monday, I have been opening and closing this page and still cannot get myself to believe what has happened. My sincere condolences to you all, I am very sorry, speechless.

Phil, was a great friend and kind and courageous human being. We connected in very early days of Medcity and quickly grew to become more than colleagues who share the passion for impacting healthcare, to politics, social justice, travelling and diversity and mostly life! Simple day to day life. He loved his family and we chatted so much about all of you and I asked him all about raising my small family. It was so easy to send a message and share a quick drink before jumping on the train.

He had this magic of connecting deeply with people. His generosity and empathy helped you think through whatever was that day’s struggle, while having some good laughs. Never a dull moment.

With all love. May his memory live long, and the causes he deeply cared about lead to the positive change that world so desperately needs.

As with so many others I was shocked and saddened to hear of Phil's passing. He was totally authentic, true to himself, and a towering force for good. I’m glad I got to sing karaoke with him and experience his brilliance at supporting life sciences and connecting people far and wide. He always had such great stories from many places including Japan and South Korea. My sympathy and heartfelt condolences to Phil’s family, friends and colleagues at MedCity.

Phil was always buzzing with ideas and great and so adept at connecting people and building personal relationships as well as productive business and academic connections. He was also a fun person to be with, and I enjoyed seeing him in full flow; a social whirlwind! I know how much his MedCity colleagues, and those in Life Sciences in Japan and elsewhere, will miss him. All the more so his family, to whom I offer my sincere condolences.

Personally to me Phil was someone who was one of the first people that shared his unique insight and knowledge on the life science market in London and the UK, always happy to give his time and thoughts, that enthusiasm didn't dampen over the 6 or so years we knew each other.

Awful news to hear of today and my thoughts are with his family. Someone who will be sincerely missed.

My wife died very suddenly in Spring 2016 of lung cancer. For the last 10 days of her life she was on life support. Three or four days before life support was due to be turned off, a very distraught me posted on facebook 'Does anyone know how to organise a funeral?'. Phil responded and he rang a whole series of undertakers in south west London to find out costs and timescales for me. He then organised a little committee to help me plan it. At this point I only knew Phil from meeting him briefly at two demonstrations, one where he met my wife along of course with facebook discussions.
Phil was a wonderful honest and principled socialist - and much of the success of the campaign to stop the demolition of all social housing in the area by Haringey council can be put down to Phil
A year later I was looking to buy a house and I bought one close to Phil's. I never saw him enough though and now I will never see him again. I will miss him for the rest of my life. He was truly a light in the darkness.

I got to know Phil whilst he was working with Medcity. At the time I was working to promote the North of England's life sciences sector, so there was by the very nature of our roles, a healthy rivalry. Phil made that rivalry one of jokes and funny one-upmanship. Ultimately we both knew we were working for the greater good of developing the UK's life science sector. Our healthy back and forth culminated in the North of England linking in with MedCity to join the UK delegation in Japan. It was a wonderful event that brought so many people together, both here in the UK and internationally. Phil, your enthusiasm for life and our sector was infectious, you will be sorely missed by many. RIP. My thoughts are with all of his friends and family.

It is so very sad to have lost such a great friend and colleague. It is a real pleasure and privilege to have known Phil, to have worked with him on a number of projects, gone to several conferences with him. Phil was an amazingly kind individual who genuinely cared, full of energy, great wit, refreshingly honest and always to the point. My deepest condolences to Milena, Sophia, Alexandra and Cuba, and of course to all friends and colleagues at MedCity. We have all lost someone very precious. As a colleague said at King's today "Phil was a really great guy and I will miss him very much".

I was lucky enough to work with Phil for many years as I shared an office with MedCity; I instantly responded to his boldness, humour and dirty laugh ; ) Getting to know him more revealed a gentle, lovely man full of compassion for others and a humble humanitarian. We enjoyed many a laugh together in London, but also abroad – his response to the humidity in Japan was something I will never forget ; ) He made me smile, I learnt so much for him and I genuinely respected his ethos and approach to the world. I’m very sad to hear this news and feel very emotional at this sudden loss. My condolences and best wishes to his family, he was a wonderful person – I am very sorry we did not get a chance to reconnect this last year or so.

I'm very sorry to hear of Phil's passing, and my thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this time. Although I only worked with Phil briefly, it was clear that he enjoyed the respect of the many people he worked with in MedCity and across London, and brought much needed levity to many situations. The important contributions of the London MedCity labs to the national testing programme owe much to his efforts.
