IT’S A MAN— IT’S A PLANE— IT’S UNDERDOG!
Everyone loves a good underdog story. Facebook is filled them! The person who was told he would never walk again is filmed running into the arms of his father. An old rusted truck is restored and is now worth more than a new vehicle. A student who is failing her classes is mentored and encouraged by a loving teacher is celebrated as her class valedictorian. And the adopted dog who was just minutes away from being euthanized rescues his new family from a house fire. Yeah, break out the tissue box, we love these kinds of stories.
We aren’t the only ones who love this type of story. So does God. How can you tell? All through scripture His gives the victorious edge to those kinds of underdogs.
Today’s lesson is about such a person and how God called out the warrior in a man held hostage by fear.
Judges 6:11-16— The angel of the Lord came, and he sat under the oak that was in Ophrah, which belonged to Joash, the Abiezrite. His son Gideon was threshing wheat in the winepress in order to hide it from the Midianites. 12 Then the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said, “The Lord is with you, valiant warrior.”13 Gideon said to him, “Please, my lord, if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened? And where are all his wonders that our ancestors told us about? They said, ‘Hasn’t the Lord brought us out of Egypt?’ But now the Lord has abandoned us and handed us over to Midian.”
From these verses, what indication do we have that Gideon was fearful?
How do we display fear of our “enemies” today?
Have you ever done something in secret so your critics wouldn’t see and humiliate you?
Do you think God was just being sarcastic when He called Gideon a “ valiant warrior?”   Or was there a deeper reason?
According to this scripture, what good might God have seen in Gideon?
What character might God see in you?
Are you willing to use that character trait to serve God?
Scripture says that “an angel of the Lord” comes and talks to Gideon.  Scholars agree that when the person is described like this, it refers to Jesus, although He had not yet been born into this world!  How amazing that Jesus knows no time or space!
What question did Gideon ask Jesus?
Do you relate to this question today?  If so, why?
David asked the same question this way:Psalm 10:1—Why, O Lord, do you stand far away? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?
Do you think God stands further away from you or closer to you in your time of trouble?
Why do you think so?
