The film industry in Alberta just keeps growing with Airdrie and Rocky View right in the thick of it.

Airdrie, Crossfield and Rocky View have already seen big-budget productions filmed in the area the past couple of years including "Ghostbusters: Afterlife".

The Australian sci-fi film "Risen" was filmed in Airdrie while Crossfield could play host to a future FX Series.

In the past year alone, Alberta has seen a huge spike in the number of sound stages being built and other studios attracting some of the biggest companies in Hollywood.

"We're starting to see these big productions come and utilize our vistas and our backdrops in different towns," said Brock Skretting with Keep Alberta Rolling. "Rural Alberta has always been a big benefit of filming in Alberta."

Luke Azevedo with Calgary Economic Development has seen many films and TV shows in Calgary area including "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle", "The Revenant" and the Netflix series "Black Summer" which used Calgary and Irricana as backdrops.

He expects the boom happening now for local film and TV workers will only grow.

"To the point where we can start talking about infrastructure and the capacity that's necessary in these regions to make it even more attractive to large budget productions that want to come and utilize your area."

Skretting agrees that the interest in filming here will grow because major studios are looking for the best backdrops for their productions.

"They're finding them in places like Didsbury, places like Crossfield, throughout Airdrie, throughout Rocky View County."

Alberta's Film and TV Tax Credit program was launched in January 2020 and has attracted around 50 productions to Alberta with total production costs of $955 million.

In March 2021, the province removed the $10-million per-project cap on the tax credit in the hopes of attracting more productions to the province.
