Alex Sutcliffe reveals Castleford Tigers beat off competition from two Super League rivals to sign him

When Alex Sutcliffe signed for the Castleford, the Tigers faithful were over the moon.

A 22-year-old in the prime of his life, the Leeds Rhinos had lost one of their academy stars to their nearest rivals.

With just 15 appearances under his name for Leeds, Sutcliffe has spent a lot of time on dual registration and on-loan at Featherstone Rovers, accumulating 20 appearances over a period of three seasons.

Now, though, he can’t wait to get started at the Jungle under new Castleford head coach Lee Radford.

“I’m looking forward to working under Radders (Lee Radford) and playing in a new system with a new set of lads,” Sutcliffe told Serious About Rugby League.

“Cas had a good year last year getting to the Challenge Cup Final and have signed well for 2022 so I’m really looking forward to it.”

The 22-year-old did reveal that it wasn’t just Castleford chasing him when it looked as though he would leave the Rhinos.

“I was out of contract at Leeds and we couldn’t agree on contract terms and I felt like I needed a fresh start and new challenge to play week in week out.

“So my agent put my name out when we couldn’t agree and fortunately I had interest from Castleford, Wakefield and Huddersfield.

“I chose Castleford and I can’t wait to get started.”

Who are these fans you speak of who were “over the moon” at this signing? Alex will be a squad player to start with. Now, if you were on about Mamo, Westerman or Edwards, those were the signings that got us excited.
