Links in Shopify Email Notifications not working

AI-generated summary

Email notification links in Shopify were appearing as plain text or dead links when social media URLs were added to the template HTML.

  • The problem was in the anchor tag syntax, not Shopify itself.
  • The href attribute used curved/typographic quotation marks instead of standard straight double quotes, likely introduced by copying code and editing on a Mac.
  • Because of that, the HTML link markup was not being parsed correctly in the email.

A corrected example was provided using proper HTML formatting for the link. After replacing the quotation marks, the links worked as expected.

Outcome:

  • Issue resolved.
  • No further troubleshooting was needed.
  • A likely cause was identified: copy/paste formatting changing valid HTML characters.

Hi all

I am trying to add my social media links and a link back to my page using the following code example but i just get text or deadlinks when i receive the email. I have tried with and without the target and the “/”. Also added the body creation code text at the top of the template and adding it into the html further down when it build the notification and nothing is working.

Hi @neil_ca ,

Make sure you’re using the correct quotation marks throughout your code. In your case, each link should look like so:

[Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/novaringlight/)

It seems like you’re using a double curved left quote, instead of a double quote when opening the href parameter.

Legend, it worked. Must be the copy and paste from the net then editing on my mac. I didn’t notice it. First to edit HTML on a mac.

Thank you so much.

Really appreciate it

Happens to us all. Glad I could help, take care!
