I dont know maybe its just in my head or in my age,
But Jazz belong to those times when things were much more simple.
Jazz Opens with boldness, with freshy full of strength notes which awake you instantly.
Than its becoming "nicer" and calm down to be very warm and inviting.
No iso e super, no BDC,
But still sophisticated and full.
I miss it...

This is a spectacular fragrance and I can understand the love for it in the frag community. However, it does smell a lot like Tsar and apparently Tsar drew its inspiration from this.

Side note:

The similarities to Tsar really happen in the dry down phase of the fragrance and that's my favorite part. The opening of this stuff is kinda harsh, esp if you get your hands on a vintage batch.

Perhaps a reformulated modern Jazz, but maybe not. Far too many notes listed here as usual. This is not even a lavender perfume people, come on! On the actual new bottle it says Accords: Coriandre, Geranium, Armoise, Cyprés and Patchouli, 1988. Wow! I think I was more into Jazz Prestige though. Maybe make an effort with Jazz Prestige and Live Jazz as well. But it's still a landmark for the industry, an innovation from another world and a relief from modern "candy" perfumes. Always special, like barbershop from outer space, way ahead of its time.

I've waited long enough to give a review to Ysl Jazz. Probably never wore It in a propper manner.
What i have, is the first edition, piano claps bottle, parfume corp or Something.
You have seen It before, It is similar with many fragrances from that era...It is Nice, performance is again very Nice.
It gives me a positive vibe, a great Allure.
I would have sworn that this had a pinneapple note in it, but it doesnt.
It does not have Something specific in it, not groundbreaking....but it is a very solid fragrance with very good performance. Always puts me in a very positive and formal spirit, cause the fragrance is more formal then casual. I would not see this worn with a t shirt and jeans....

It’s back in stock on the UK YSL Beauty website. Just ordered mine. I was worried it was discontinued because it had been out of stock for so long. Hope they’re rebottling it and bringing back the beyond iconic original bottle. It’s just not quite the same in the new more generic bottle.

My love affair with Jazz began in 1991 or 1992, when I received a bottle as a gift. Back then, the bottle was black-and-white plastic. I recall it was the best thing I had ever smelled.

Not long ago, I bought a tester in glass from a chemist which was renovating. It mostly smelled the same.

I see the classic bottle has been discontinued. Jazz is now part of some YSL collection in identical bottles, but I don’t know if it’s the same.

But I digress. The original was strong, original, soapy and long-lasting. A truly beautiful blend which exuded luxury and quality.

Too good for everyday use; Jazz belongs only on the top shelf!

Loved it. Was great

You wear it today and it will still be a Hit!
This is not a grandpa perfume...
Black- the seriousness and authority of it,
White- the sportive, passionate, charismatic of it.
Jazz gives you the power and charisma, lot of self confidence and strength.
What can i say more? What do you need more??

perryforever

Im a woman. I wore this in my mid teens. Do you know, I'm not even sure how it smelled on me, I just liked the fresh spicy smell. I'm sad to hear that it's been discontinued and then changed. I understand they discontinue scents, but to bring them back, and they don't smell the same. Gutting.

Titti Claren

I love this perfume, in the vintage version. For me this is the perfect masculine scent. Deep, sensual, warm. I can't imagine what the current version is like.

Chambery

I just bought the latest version of Jazz EDT today and am so saddened by what the management at YSL are doing to their brand. Who are these people??

The original JAZZ EDT bottle is no more. Instead they opt on lower costs by using the same cubist bottle as they do for the new M7 bottle.

Next, the reformulation. WT???!!!!
How dare you change this to smell lile Cartier's Pasha!!??
It smells nothing like JAZZ. How can you even call it JAZZ??????!??

Oh well that's it for YSL. On the road to disintegration

scenturian

This one is very spicy, also herbal and fresh at the same time. I miss Jazz so much.
Never tried the new bottle, but probably is not same as the original since the bottle is different, similar story with the Opium.

ROUSAK

One of the few classics I cannot stand. Unbearable sour note which also exists in pasha Cartier. Really smell unpleasant. 3.5/10

odeur_mon_dieu

I’m curious to see what I think of Jazz today. I bought the black & white bottle back in high school - around 1989 - and remember thinking how sophisticated I seemed wearing it. Until someone told me it smelled like cough syrup 😵💫 I remember it being one of those quintessential, heady 80s scents. I never really knew if I liked it or not, although I’m not really into the woody aromatics.

Stoopid Phresh

I've been wearing this lately because I'm sick of all the bubblegum, fresh & sweet scents of today. This is very masculine, fresh & spicy-Smells like a very upscale barbershop-It makes me think of old spice + aqua fresh toothpaste...It sounds funny but it definitely works!!!

Fashionplatefanny

Very fresh and uplifting, smells very clean. Nice fragrance for summer. Smells very similar to Tous Man Sport. I never see this fragrance anymore so I assume it’s been discontinued.

Jog

This is for the most recent release - the clear cube bottle (that came after the LA Creation one).

I so wanted so much to like this most recent release after so many years. And even after being disappointed, was still considering buying a back up brand new bottle being sold lower than current prices.

I love Jazz, and from the late 80's, I went through several bottles (the original Memphis zig zag version). The current one still smells identical, but doesn't last and is gone within an hour or two. I wanted to remedy this by bringing a small decant bottle to respray, but the precious bucks I spent for this would be gone sooner than later (it's not cheap!). So I ordered what others recommended was the nearest equivalent to the original vintage zigzag version - Nicolai's Amber Oud and Dua's The Blues (both arriving soon.) We will see.

As a consolation, I still have my precious 50ml bottle of vintage Tsar which I am conserving, smells similar and lasts much longer (than modern Jazz). But that too nowadays is rare and quite expensive (like rare vintage Jazz on ebay) to keep buying.

cedrat

I'm wearing Jazz today. This is instantly recognizable as a fougere, with the lavender and oakmoss. The anise in this is also mixed with cardamom. There is also an intense sweetness that's a bit like a graham cracker. It is in the same family as YSL's other masterpiece, Rive Gauche, Azzaro's Azzaro Pour Homme and modern fougeres like Parfums de Nicolai New York Intense, Rogue Perfumery's Bon Monsieur, and Tom Ford's Beau de Jour. The usage of cardamom in a fougere links this closely to Geo F Trumper Paisley, which is a more cardamom-forward, powdery affair. Much less herbal than Houbigant's Fougere Royale or Cologne Intense, but much less harsh and floral than Guerlain Heritage, this is a pleasant, masculine fougere that is nice to own, but not worth spending silly money over (old versions are selling for an arm and a leg, which baffles me. Perhaps it's the nostalgia value that abets such atrocious pricing?)

gbone

Masterpiece ,aromatic with a slight spicy edge it’s a beautiful fantastic fragrance ….masculine but not too serious yet not a casual scent ,I find it very versatile and absolutely signature scent worthy

Honestly dosent feel dated one single day to my nose unlike so many from the same era

Why do these companies discontinue these classics is it just because of the complexity and current regulations that they simply cannot make it to a decent standard anymore ?

As long as I can find bottles of it ,preferably older ones I will never be without it

Colognewizz

I have the 2011 version still 90% full. Still smells great as when it was new. Great dinner or party option.

melanie mother or foxes

I'm a woman in my early 50s and i wore this back in late 1989 constantly. The version in the plastic black and white bottle.
I went through 4 bottles in total. I loved it so much. It had great staying power . Im really wanting to purchase a new bottle to revisit this but I'm scared that the reformulated version will be crap. 😭😭😭
UPDATE.
I have received my new cube bottle. The notes may have been altered but it still remains the same scent as I remember back in the 1980s. It is not crap, its glorious. And longevity is 5hrs plus. Im very happy 😊 🥰👍

DariaFrancesca74

I fondly remember this fragrance by
YSL, which belonged to my older brother in the 90s. I remember that it was one of his girlfriend's first Christmas gifts, to be precise a box that resembled the keyboard of a piano (black and white) containing perfume, soap and after shave. Miraculously I found over time (in a remote corner of the bathroom) and jealously kept the soap…. NEVER used. My description will undoubtedly be fragmentary, since I keep this soap still in its original packaging as a simulacrum, I will try to identify some elements: surely lavender has a prominent role since it is a soap it is predictable, the floral notes still emerge, I perceive the carnation , certainly the boises base and the tobacco have blended well with the soapy composition, which I do not intend to use at all. Every now and then he sniffed it like an olfactory cuddle.

Aarhus

How dare they call this JAZZ? Originally a true masterpiece, but todays version smells nothing like the original. Not only that - it's a terrible, soapy, generic harshened scent. You won't even find the dna in this new version. It's the biggest letdown of the century,. Don't buy this! Please bring back the original

Scentsperience

Have the old 100ml from 2011. Its SMOKING compared to the 80ml cube-bottle available today.
YSL has painstakingly & wholeheartedly stuffed up the Geranium & Sandalwood (Javanol's cheaper variant Sandal Cyclopropane)
Spring day. Brunch & beer with family. Jazz fits perfect.

RawSmells

I do t usually leave negative reviews, or bash fragrances. This is my only designer frag and YSL had £16 off, free delivery and a few samples of choice.

It just arrived, oh what a disappointment :( this is subjective, so it’s entirely my view.

Smells nothing like the original, it smells like slightly fragrances cold pressed soap bars . A definite pass for me. Off to eBay it goes, very sad :(

BillyBearPeppersteak

The version I have right now is the small cube from YSL. And I'm surprised more people don't mention how similar this is to Safari by Ralph Lauren. It's like a smoother Safari with much more floral. Less loud too.

I remember having a full bottle of this in junior high in the old black and white plastic bottle. It was the first bottle of anything i used up entirely. It lived in my backpack and I wore it every single day over a school year. Paired it with the Giorgio of Beverly Hills deodorant and it was my scent.

I notice immediately with this newer version is it's a bit more muted. Like anything modern that's been reformulated it's like they took the old powerhouse scents and took them from 11 to a 7. This wasn't a powerhouse but you get my drift. The volume is turned down. The depth and richness isn't there. But it smells amazing. Such a shame that yet another iconic scent is discontinued.

I'm going to pull the trigger on a tall clear glass bottle even though I hear it's nowhere near the same as the old black and white. As much as I love Safari I think I would grab for this first most of the time because of how smooth it is.

Riverwind79

Got this yesterday from a local collector who is decluttering his collections and even gave a little discount (still rather full bottle). I just want to reminisce the scent I once smell as a kid when I was in my teens. Ahh those fond memories are coming back again.... I remember the black and white plastic bottle version of YSL Jazz which I will wear to school. Come to think of it, why will a 16/17 years old kid be so attracted to fougere.. back then we will call these 'uncle's perfume'. Gosh, we really don't care, do we? I think this is really a timeless, classy, elegant and masculine perfume as most have mentioned. I am sure to keep this bottle close to my heart.

Panas Mel

Bright, spicy and playful.
Performes as an eau de toilette.
I found myself using this perfume even though I didn't buy it (stole it from my father) during a hypersexual month. I received more than ones the comment "Ah! You smell like a man!".
Even though I wouldn't buy it (I gravidate more towards the dark and mystirious scents) I found myself enjoying it very much and it's scent will always be connected with amazing memories.
The bottle was nice and bourgie.

FragrantBob

YSL seem to make some great scents that have rather average longevity. YSL Jazz is no exception it lasts about 4 hours on my skin but the scent is wonderful. It evokes a certain classiness, a sense of a purposeful man about town. Jazz is an aromatic fragrance that is fresh, a little spicy in the opening and with a well blended floral dry down that also reveals some woody notes. In the opening there are distinct bergamot, nutmeg and anise notes. The sandalwood comes through early for me. During the dry down there are geranium and lavender notes along with the woodiness from the sandalwood and a hint of leather. It is a beautifully blended fragrance that I remember was very popular in the very early 90s. The sillage of Jazz is about arm length. Although I love the fragrance I think it is starting to date a bit, but I still enjoy wearing it very much. I think older millennials and gen-x men would appreciate it more as it was a fragrance of our generation. It is a versatile fragrance that can be worn year round and in a variety of settings.

This is NOT a classic Fougere! Despite the proclamations below that it is. There is way too much floral contribution in the heart, and not enough straight out green note contribution. There is way too much indiscriminate use of the term "fougere". It does have lavender, the "indespensible Fougere note" (other than green notes simulating the imaginary Fern smell). It does have the oakmoss. Fougere-like would be OK. Or the Spicy-floral fougere given below would be OK. But it's not a classic Fougere. And yes, I am the self-annointed fougere police.

Hugo Montez

Spicy-floral Fougère!
I'm a huge fan of YSL fragrances, until the last Y line. That line is a bit disappointing to me. But fortunately, I have many other YSL fragrances to enjoy, like this gem here.

Jazz appeared in 1988, when Cool Water was launched and the world was preparing for a change. Fresh, clean and aquatic were the themes and things like animalic leathers of chypres were starting to disappear. Jazz shows a different path. Lavender, jasmine, oakmoss and nutmeg. A beautiful Fougère with Spicy-floral nuances.

Super high quality and very masculine in a classic Fougère way, but with a freshness that puts it apart from the other fougère offerings out there. I don't know why YSL decided to discontinued it but probably it didn't well in sales. In 2011 they re-lauched it in a different bottle but the formula changed and it seemed somewhat flat and watered down. I think it's now discontinued again or only available in some places.

Anyway, if you like fougère fragrances but want something slightly different and high quality, try to grab a bottle of this beauty. It's really fascinating how a fougère appears to be familiar but in the same time different and modern. One of my favourite fougères and a classic that would stood the test of time if L'Oréal didn't had decided to reformulate it.

I havent worn this enough to write a full review but i did want to mention that i am a little shocked not to see heritage from Guerlain listed as a comparable. They were both put out about the same time and i have vintage bottles of both (the half black and half white bottle of jazz & the gold cap 1990s heritage). Maybe the newer bottles dont share the DNA but these older bottles are spot on competitors. I think they also both released early 1990s maybe even both 1991. Vintage heritage is my favorite fragrence of all time so anything that gives it a run for its money even if its just in the opening is a winner to me. I love this DNA & scent profile and would love to see a real reviewer do a side by side of the vintage versions! If you like jazz check out vintage heritage specifically the vintage edt. Imagine living in a world where companies jostled for position to put out a real mens fragrence and they spent years perfecting their formulas. Now every 6 months we get a new worthless sweet flanker. Its a shame for men everywhere what we have to go through for good perfume now a days. You have to go back to the 80s and 90s when the world was a simplier place. You inevitably run into this wall of vintage fragrences and there are 1000s of them, jazz is a winner. Oh and by the way dont let anyone give you an age group on these types of fragrences. You do have to have a mature nose. Maybe been into fragrences for 5 to 10 years. But a 25 year with a mature nose could like this and a 35 year old (like me) can like this. This isnt old manish by any stretch. This scent profile is timeless.

This fragrance has a special place in my heart. My Dad used to wear it when I was growing up. He was quite a classy man at the time, and I always remember smelling it when he would hug me in the mornings on the way to work at the hospital. It’s a very elegant and classy fragrance, smells like the kind of man who has his life together, and appreciates the finer things in life, but doesn’t look down upon those who don’t or can’t. I still have a bottle he gave to me, I’ve run it down to 20ml. Since I started appreciating colognes more, I sadly found out it has been discontinued. Such I dare not wear it only sniff the atomiser to remind me of my Dad on school mornings on the way to work. Maybe I’ll wear it on a special occasion on a colder evening out to dinner for old times sake

It is a masculine 90’s fragrance but still modern in my opinion. It is soapy, fresh, green, spicy, and woody fragrance. Women in their 40’s and older will find this sexy and compliment from left to right. It is in the same family with eau savage(green juice), ralph lauren safari( not as boozy), emanuel ungaro III, jaguar green vintage. If you like any of these fragrances, it is safe blind buy. I have a vintage transparent bottle and the performance is excellent. It lasts about 12 hours and projects strongly around 5 hours indoors. Silage is also good.

It is actually very versatile, signature scent worthy and yet I do not use it as much because
I have to be in the right mood. I often use it on sundays during spring right after the shower and planning on having guests out by the pool or garden food drinks etc.

Overall, it is a refreshing soapy fragrance with woody undertone. It is perfect for men over 35 and up. I do not recommend this for teenagers.

Beware that this fragrance has a flanker called “live jazz” which smells totally different. It is a lemon citrus bomb. It smells like citrus based after shave cologne or some type of shower gel. Between the two, I strongly recommend the original jazz.

caifan

I love Yves Saint Laurent Jazz, it is one of my favorite fragrances of all time, because I really enjoy its aroma, it seems to me a very masculine and timeless fragrance. I discovered it relatively recently, but its scent is one of the best I have ever smelled (for my taste), and I have only smelled it in its glass bottle, I cannot imagine how it could have been the bottle version plastic in black and white. I still do not understand why it has been discontinued, if it is an easy scent to like and that it has had a legion of fans since its release.

Describing its aroma is somewhat complex, because it contains many notes and has an olfactory amalgam with many nuances. Jazz is a woody aromatic with floral and spicy tones, its composition was based on masculine floral notes such as lavender and geranium, as well as a complex combination of spicy notes such as nutmeg, coriander, cinnamon, anise and tobacco. In addition to including herbal notes such as apricot and woody notes. Flirt a bit with the Fougere aromatic family and the same with woody and aromatic spicy.

Although its aroma is already perceived a bit classic, I think it still maintains an attractive olfactory structure.

The latest versions still last several hours on the skin, but it only projects well for the first hour, and it decreases in intensity,, it still performs better than many current fragrances.

rasputin1963

I won't lie to you: When YSL JAZZ debuted in 1988, I was distinctly underwhelmed. It smelled nice and inoffensive, but it wasn't groundbreaking or experimental or edgy or fashion-forward. Or even distinctive. Basically, I thought it was expensive AXE: pleasant enough, but altogether forgettable.

It was at that time that I knew the perfume industry, at least of the department store-tier variety, had changed, and was thenceforth going to "play it safe". Sure, some dynamic new numbers would appear afterwards: JOOP! Hommes, Dior DUNE, Mugler ANGEL, Dior FAHRENHEIT, Lauder HAVANA, even OPIUM (Hommes).

But I sensed that the Golden Age of Perfumery as we'd known it was coming to an end, after a brilliant run in the 70's and early 80's.

Maybe it was somewhat inevitable; I mean, as far as great masculine fougères go, where could you go after the ingenious blockbusters KOUROS and POLO (green)?

This was before the coup-de-grâce of the IFRA restrictions in the 90's.

I don't expect this response to be popular, but I've always had a rueful place in my heart for YSL JAZZ.

Jandp1

I was finally able to secure a proper (molded black & white plastic cover) vintage bottle of Jazz made in 1988 (batch 8279).

Wow, what a vast difference in quality and smell to the reformulated products released after 2000. I bought the latest clear glass cube version (2018 batch), before it got discontinued, and also a 2004 bottle (as in the picture above) this year and they do not come close to the superior original Jazz which I fell in love with in the early 1990's. The 2004 product is better than the 2018 in both smell and performance, which means it has been a gradual downward spiral from the original release.

It was actually my very first proper fragrance as a teenager and I am happy to smell it again after all this time and in the way it was designed to smell. I suspect the later severe restrictions on the use of oakmoss by IFRA also played a part. There also seem to be other notes missing from the reformulations which altered the character of "Jazz" in the later produced versions for me.The vintage is definitely more spicy and aromatic than the later version where I pick up stronger woody notes, not unlike pencil shavings.

The later formulations last a couple of hours on me but after spraying the vintage 7 hours ago on my hand, it still comes through strongly. Clean, classy, rich deep and a unique smelling product matched probably only by a few other fragrances. I love and own VC&A Tsar too and did not see a close resemblance (as suggested here) before but there are definitely some similarities between the VINTAGE Jazz and Tsar that is not noticeable at all with the reformulated versions.Tsar leans more green.

I am of the opinion that Jazz cannot be fairly reviewed if not based on the original formulation. I have used quite a few of the tall clear bottles of batches released between 2006 and 2010, that were cheap and readily available locally around 2010/2011, and while I thought they were adequate at the time I realised now that it was not a complete product as it was missing a lot of what made the 1990’s product so great.

9.5/10 for the true 1988 to 1990's vintage.

UPDATE: I bought another 100 ml bottle from the Sanofi period. This one is from a batch May 2000 and unfortunately already reformulated from the vintage proper Jazz of the 1988 to mid 1990's. So my advice is not to bother with the bottles released in the tall clear glass, even if it is marked "Sanofi" (as in the white & black plastic bottles after 1993) as it is not quite the same product that should not demand a premium price to be paid.

Once upon a time,
I was 15 years old,
Hair started growing on different new strange places on my buddy,
I had that friend of mind, 2 years old older, which i admired and tried to copy.
One day, it was in the summer of those 2 months long summer holiday when he first let me here black vinyl record of THE led zeppelin no.4,
He put some smell on him.
I saw black and white bottle.
In the begining the smell was dramatic and crazy,
But after 2 hours it left some sweet amazing smell of caramel or whatever.
I wanted it.
I want that style he had.
I saved some money cleaning school rooms and in the end of the summer-
I bought it.
First few spritz on me i was in shock from the strenth of that perfume. It was the EDT and he has after shave splash...
It was too strong these days.
No i wonder if ever i can smell this mother f___er again...
It was just a dream for me.
Like all perfumes are for us no??

I had the chance to get Jazz for $43 two years ago, but I didn't care too much for it. Nonetheless, my brother saw a brand-new, sealed bottle for $56 and...guess what...it's now in my hands!

YSL Jazz opens with spicy notes of coriander, cardamom and nutmeg, which, together with lavender and oakmoss, provide the composition with an earthy, dry aura. This opening is strong and somewhat off-putting, but it's just a matter of minutes that the cinnamon, basil, and anise notes start to kick in, thus giving balance to the starting phase, adding a bit more sweetness, and making it a more oriental fragrance--at times, this juice reminds me of a fresher, non-sweet rendition of Opium Pour Homme. Within an hour, the floral notes begin to appear, and the tonka bean and amber accords contribute to the creaminess. The cedar, leather, and musk are not very noticeable, but they're mostly there to supply the mix with masculinity. It's not really that woody, but mostly spicy and creamy to my nose.

YSL Jazz is really an awesome fragrance that encompasses the olfactory transition from the 80s into the 90s. The bottle I own was made in 2011. The juice has great longevity (+10 hours on skin), very good sillage, and moderate projection. It can be used mostly in social settings that don't involve any romantic purposes, or standing out. As a detail, this is like a more rounded and classier version of Tsar by Van Cleef & Arpels, and it's also quite similar to Salvador Dali's Salvador. There are times when this fragrance reminds me of Eau Sauvage Extrême, but this one is, by far, more pleasant, dynamic, and modern.

This perfume created by Jean-François Latty in 1988 has come to my home to stay. If you find it and appreciate classic masculine perfumes, grab a bottle of YSL Jazz and don't let it go as it's become really hard to find and prices are going through the roof.

You have classic fougères like Caron Pour Un Homme de Caron (more vanilic), Azzaro Pour Homme (more anisic), Kouros (more animalic) or Cool Water (more freshie). Jazz has a floral spicy accord. Starts very fresh and spicy. Coriander and Geranium for the most part. As it dries down you will get some anise, jasmine and sandalwood. Lavender is in the background. Its a great fresh spicy fougère that screams masculinity and virility. Not extremely strong, more subtle and sophisticated. I love it. Plus its from 1988 (my birth year) like some other favorites of mine. Fahrenheit and Cool Water.

I give this a solid 4/5 stars.

PS: My bottle is an old one, pre - La collection which has more depth and complexity. The new square bottle is very watered down, not worthy to be honest.

... and all that jazz!

This cologne brings me back to the days of my first marriage. In the mid 90’s, YSL Jazz was in fashion due to the scent but also for the fancy black and white plastic bottle mimicking piano keys.

Jazz is a masculine and elegant scent, whith lots of spices making its scent somewhat pungent. You better be easy on the trigger. "Very spicy" in the Jazz opening means nutmeg, coriander, cinnamon and cardamom, plus an heavy load of lavender fougére. The heart is quite floral while the woody bottom is preety traditional. I make a remark for the fine leather and tobacco notes.
The result is a bit barbershop with a mix of green, floral and spicy notes. If applied discreetly it's very nice Everything become gentle and nothing screams out loud. Jazz has a touch of a retro style but it can't be considered a perfume (just) for an old man.
All the people around me seems to like it and it turned out to be an unexpected compliment getter. The performance isn't great, but not too bad either.
All my considerations are ment for the vintage fragrance and flask. The current bottle is rather common and I miss the first plastic black and white flashy one. I used two full big vintage bottles till about 10 years ago. Nowadays I have two Jazz decants, one vintage and another one with the modern Jazz juice. The current formulation seems to be a lot watered down. I hope that it may be something wrong just with my decant. Hopefully YSL did not murder this fragrance like they have done with the current juice of La Nuit de L'Homme.

I found this at the duty-free and snagged it for my husband who needed a new frag. It is divine! When he first smelled it, he said, "an adult man's scent". (He is 30.
Until his last bottle of perfume from Zara, he only knew Polo Blue, which was from his high school days.) I don't have the skills to describe this properly, but I will just say that if you are looking for something that is not too sporty or thick, but will leave an impression of relaxed elegance, I recommend you try this!

In Fragrant Bliss

Have the old 100ml from 2011. Its SMOKING compared to the 80ml cube-bottle available today.

YSL has painstakingly & wholeheartedly stuffed up the Geranium & Sandalwood (Javanol's cheaper variant Sandal Cyclopropane)

Spring day. Brunch & beer with family. Jazz fits perfect.

Picked up a 90s bottle at auction and was thinking the whole time afterwards until it arrived...."It'll have turned, it won't be the same."

It's not the same, or rather, it is exactly the same. I'm not.

Some of the top citrus may be ever so slightly bruised, but the core fragrance is largely synthetic, and would most likely survive a nuclear blast. Thank goodness for that!

I remember it from 1991 because a boy at school had it, and it was hideous because he was. I saw the bottle, couldn't recall the scent 100%, only how hideous this fellow was, so I had to get it and find out.

Same scent, but I have grown old, and far more bruised than the citrus notes.

If they called it 'time machine to 1991' it might sell more, might not. It's discontinued, I believe, and was re-vamped as a reformulation which I haven't tried. This is the 1991 scent though.

It's a none too vintage vintage (1991 barely scrapes in), which boldly holds its own in the 21st Century, and most definitely gives modern fare a run for the money they charge for a lot of stuff from the same house nowadays.

You must not smell it directly, that's the only take home point for myself. it's an across the room or walking by fragrance. That will hook others, not the smell a half inch from your wrist, which for the first hour, is too busy and muddlesome.

Give it an hour. Yes! it actually lasts more than an hour. Most things from the ninety-o-lithic age actually did.

It's what perfumery should still be today. Unfortunately 1991 was the zenith for so many things.

Sulo

A pleasant, though rather synthetic smell. Rather formal than casual. Poor longevity and sillage make this a one-time purchase for me.

Jazz by YSL is very easy to overlook in a big collection. I will admit I have really left Jazz to languish alone in the corner of the collection. So, trying to right this wrong I have tried to wear it with more consistency and I can say I couldn't be more glad that I did.

Sometimes you just want to smell clean. That isn't a very profound statement but in the context of fragrance it could mean many things. With Jazz, this means I want to smell clean masculine and very green and at the same time not overpowering. If you want the spicy green soapiness of an artisanal soap punctuated by a robust dose of leather, amber and musk that hits the right notes, then Jazz is your scent!

This is for the thirty and up crowd and for me leans more masculine. Jazz could be worn fall through spring and should be worn away from the office. As a fragrance this definitely works well under a sweater or under a polo in slightly warmer spring weather. I get a very day on the town vibe with Jazz and this would work well for a simple jaunt for coffee or sifting through vinyl, preferably on a rainy day.

This has been my most consistently stocked fragrance for nearly 2 decade's, thanks to my mother, who loves YSL and bought me this repeatedly as a gift.
(More than I could keep up with)

I really came to appreciate its light spicy freshness, for a scent that had clocked some year's, with out of trend touches, via Moss and a fougere like bouquet.

However it was aimed for my age demographic, only 15 years earlier.

Now, over the years, my vintage bottles have sadly turned, the citrus is off.

But I now appreciate similar scents of the era and love 80s aromatic/fougeres.

Jazz opened my nostrils to complexity, comparative to its musical name sake.

I simply won't take linear pop, that goes for fragrance.

I now love 80s classics such as:
Cerruti 1881, Drakkar noir, Lapidus pour homme and dared take on beasts like One man show.

Not in the same league of course, but I got over the moss like any young man should.

There are some incredible scents from yesteryear.

Jazz is a good metaphor for this.

Marvelous scent and although it's from 1988, it's by no means "dated." Jazz has a very similar vibe to several fragrances I own with its green and woody composition (Tsar, Jaguar, and Safari. However, Jazz is not an exact clone of those fragrances, it's more like it shares a little from each of them, particularly Safari. In fact, if I didn't own vintage Safari, I would probably buy Jazz. I'd either hunt down and buy a vintage bottle (if I found a good deal), or invest in the newer La Collection release, which I understand does the vintage justice. All in all, Jazz is for collectors and lovers of vintage Green fragrances, such as myself such as Tsar, Jaguar, Monsieur, Bowling Green, and the King of Green, Polo original. Jazz fits in that group and holds its own very nicely.

TeeEm

A fresh, green, spicy perfume which reminds me of good times in the very early 90s...

The original bottle (plastic bottle resembling a piano key) is probably the best performing scent I have ever come across (as I remember it)

If you like fresh, green and spicy you will love this...(think green polo or Tsar).
I did not know it is discontinued... I bought a new bottle around 9 months ago...

Dated?
No!!!
... Just different to current fashionable scents...

For me it is still in my top 10 of all times!!!

This is what James Bond smells like I guess. Very masculine fragrance. After the spray the spices are very noticeable, when the drydown comes the ingredients get milder and softer with quite prominent tobacco, lavender and cinnamon. It's actually quite warm scent. The name fits to it - somehow I get the picture of a house jazz quartet in a downtown classic and a bit smokey jazz club.

What a sexy masterpiece.
To me 8/10.

APULIAN

what a nice fragrance! ysl jazz is a perfect mix of green, floral and spicy notes. everything is gentle, nothing screaming. jazz has a touch of retro style but it cant be considered an old-man parfume. it's so clean and fresh, it reminds me a lot rive gauche, which is better for richness and performance, but jazz is so gourgeous, so well done...wow! for me it's a great barbershop fragrance but it's only my humble opinion. casual and elegant in the same time, inoffensive and perfect for overspraying. u cant ask more from jazz.it's absolutely manly, for me it's a safe blind buy. i have the long transparent bottle and i heard it's discontinued but u can find "la collection" version on the market, but i cant tell u the differences between them. however the version i have it's not so difficult to find in a store and the price is very affordable. seasons:all occasions: work, free time. not dates because it's not the sexiest fragrance on the market. performance is average, projects good for the first 1-1,5 hour, then became silent. it lasts for 4 hours more or less. una fantastica scoperta!

update may 2018: i get the original version with the black and white bottle and i find for the 95% similar to mine. the older seems to be a little bit heavier and maybe more herbal but for me are basically the same scent.

bubbagump210

This reminds me a lot fo Rive Gauche but with more spice and wood. But there is certainly that fougere undertone I love.

Hastey

For many many moons this was my go to signature. I fell in love with it from the first moment I tried it back in 1989 and cried like an infant when they discontinued it. One of the best fragrances to come out of this house, and for that matter, the fragrance world in general.

I need to get my hands on the La Collection version, cause what I'm hearing is it's identical, albeit a little weaker. I can live with the little weaker if it matches the scent. It will hurtle me back to 1989.

Problem233

One of nicest perfumes ysl had. Sad they they discontinue making this product. I need my Jazz back

NZFH

@The Phoenix - it is still available as "La Collection Jazz" - which is damn fine and almost identical to the original. It's still unmistakably Jazz (see my review).

landshark321

Finally happy to try this as I've heard much about it, and YSL Jazz harkens back to the both the power fragrance era and the end of the era during which fougeres were prominent, as it seems to be both a bit of a fougere as well as a heavier spicier winter order.

I definitely get more "spicy" than "fresh" as I smell Jazz, but it's indubitably a bit of both. However, the lavender, from the opening through much of the dry down, remains a prominent accord that makes it lean toward fougere. However, the spicy elements of cinnamon, sandalwood, cedar, leather, tobacco, and most notably, oakmoss, take over in the dry down and give Jazz a heavier character than a "true" fougere, perhaps.

I'm not in love with Jazz specifically but I'm fond of the men's fragrances of the era, as many like this are masculine and strong and harken back to a time now 30 years removed.

As with many vintage 1980s, the performance is just fine, as it projects and lasts plenty.

Jazzy Jeff By Yves Saint Laurent

This is one of my favorites of the late 80's. In fact it smelled more like the early 90's to me. It takes me back to the Manhattan jazz clubs & Greenwich Village nightclubs and stand up comedy clubs from the 1988 through 1992 period. Think Jerry Seinfeld in a deep purple suit or bold red suit with the mic and a brick wall behind him. For whatever reason this cologne is also making me think of Arsenio Hall. This fragrance is artistic & playful, not a snobbish cologne despite the Yves Saint Laurent label. It's colors & music notes, and completely evocative of actual jazz music.

It's a simple fresh and spicy scent. Jazz opens with a citrusy bergamot orange, but it's not as citrusy as most typical openings. There is also a little alcohol. Before you can smell more oranges, it turns spicy with basil, cardamom (ginger) nutmeg, Artemisia, coriander & cinnamon. The spices surround a lavender scent. The lavender is almost but not quite like a lavender scented laundry detergent. It's got a very clean fresh smell. The florals that join up with lavender include carnation, iris, jasmine and geranium. Normally these flowers are feminine & found in women's perfumes but they are all based on a deep lavender, and a carnation that seems to be right behind it. So while it is floral, it's more on the unisex floral side. There are just too many spices on the top & leathery musk & tobacco, smoky sandalwood and woodsy notes to make it into a woman's perfume. This can be worn by the ladies who like smoky florals or spicy florals but for me this is a man's aromatic fougere.

The leather notes and tobacco are quite masculine, and the woods linger for the longest time. The freshness is gone and the scent becomes dry and woodsy. The sandalwood is the key player in the final stage. Despite the number of notes, it smells linear, like it takes a faster time to develop into the dry portions to keep it from smelling too floral. But I find that it has a fair balance of florals & spices, and woodsy notes. It's almost a chypre. Total day wear, but somewhat dressy, semi-formal. You can wear jazz with a dress shirt, no tie, a suit or that 90's classic look of a dress shirt, no tie, blazer & JEANS. Blazer over jeans. This cologne doesn't smell too formal or too serious. It has a casual air.

This fragrance I wore out on dates & to clubs. It smells expensive & far from a cheap cologne. The YSL stamp is definitely on it but it's got a charming sophistication that would attract women who wear YSL perfumes. I will admit that YSL is better at composing women's fragrances but this is probably the one man's cologne - at least during it's time - that seemed to be made with more thought & care.

Good stuff!

AND ALL THAT JAZZ

Jazz by Yves Saint Laurent smells like a dimly lit jazz nightclub café without the booze or the caffeine smells, but with jus as much spiciness and smokiness like the scent of cigarette smoke that creates clouds in the air. It's not 100 percent accurate to actual cigarette smoke clouds, thank God, but that's the vision that played in my head while inhaling this fragrance. And I loved it. This is not as woodsy as I would like it to have been and it's basically a man's chypre. This is still such a very artistically formulated fragrance. The artistry in the notes and how they match up together and smoothly flow together while not being too similar to each other is what is meant by it's moniker Jazz. Jazz is improvisational and sometimes it can be smooth and elegant like it has been rehearsed enough times to come off as perfect.

Jazz by YSL opens with Artemisia and coriander, so it smells a bit like the outdoors. It's also spicy with basil and lavender. It's more South of France than Greenwich Village, but that didn't surprise me as this is a French cologne. The lavender note is also spicy and pastoral and the one floral note that always stands out in men's colognes. This is also a fougere as it contains the lavender top note and later on the santal or sandalwood in the dry down/base notes. But unlike most fougeres, this is not as unisex. For me this is still very much targeting a male audience.

After the lavender fades, the floral notes of iris, carnation, jasmine and geranium appear, like faded showgirls that can't really do much but do a bit of back-up dancing. They are feminine but not the stars of this men's ensemble of jazz musicians. The jazz plays on and on while only the lavender, which is frankly a manly floral scent, as the big player.

The dry down comes off as woodsy. There's sandalwood, cedar wood, oak moss, and lots of it. This is a chypre with woodsy notes to die for. There's warm golden amber tones, and smoky tobacco leaves. The dry down is really the best part of the fragrance because it matches up with the imagery of a jazz nightclub. The woods, the tobacco, the warm night air.

This is a beautiful fragrance. Recommended Use: Evenings, Dinners, Dates, Parties, and of course Jazz Clubs. It does not match up with a suit or tuxedo but it can be worn with one. It's more like a cologne to wear with semi-formal wear or business casual: shirts with no ties, blazers or jackets, leather jackets and dress shirts with pants/dark jeans, or blazer with jeans, nothing especially elegant, just a casual scent of cigarettes and jazz.

missan

I can honestly say that if I could get the original Jazz and the original Paco Rabanne I wouldn´t need any other. These are men´s cologne, period. Nothing gets better.

vossalex123

My Dad gave me a half-used bottle of the original vintage from the late 80s (The one with the piano key plastic shell.) I'd have to say this is the best fragrance I've ever smelled. Opens with a fresh blast of herbs, spices and florals, balanced with some semi-sweet citrus. Classy, masculine and earthy, this is what a true gentleman smells like, with nuances of leather and pipe tobacco. But, at the same time, it doesn't smell like an old man - I think any age can probably pull this off. As people have said below, it does smell kind of 'funky,' but in the best way - it makes this a unique fragrance. As such, as much as I love it, I'd recommend you smell it before you buy, as it definitely doesn't suit everyone. As for compliments, I got a few with this, but I also got a lot of puzzled people wanting to know what on earth I'm wearing - not because they don't like it, just because it doesn't smell like everything else. Longevity and projection are both beast, so go easy on the sprayer. This is also probably the most versatile scent I've ever smelt - just as great when relaxing on the beach as it is relaxing at the fireside. I haven't tried the reformulation(s) but, as far as the vintage is concerned, this is the absolute crème de la crème of 'barbershop' frags - an absolute gem!

NZFH

Ridiculously fond memories associated with this stuff. Have always loved it unconditionally. Heh. Even toying with the idea of buying a bottle again, although it would be a weird sort of time-warp!

sniffmaster

The notes are well blended resulting in a delicious aroma that triggers emotions and memories.

Jazz is a competent, classy and very masculine fougere with plenty of earthy greenness. It's a very, very similar scent to Tsar, but Jazz is smoother and less soapy. I happen to like the bracing herbal soapiness of Tsar, but for those who don't, Jazz is a good (but alas, much pricier) option.

mountain72

Live Jazz is so much better.

aqua_de_la_vita

I couldn't agree more with all who call this a classic fougere. A true inspiration that was created by YSL, very similar is Tsar and Safari. I enjoy the late 80's early 90's deep woodsy/warm /spicy blend. There's floral notes of Geranium and the obvious lavender top notes giving to that sharp crisp vib.
Longevity and Silage is a BEAST
Overall,
YSL, when the relaunch of M7, Pour Homme and Jazz I was hopefully that they would very close. Unfortunately these CLASSIC'S and SOPHISTICATED frag's fade away within an hour, not the original version. For those who are interested this classic's do yourself a favor find the orginal version, you will understand why. The original version is still far more complex than anything coming out today. 8/10

My first encounter with Jazz was on my cousins college roommate. I slept in his bed while visiting, and loved the scent since it was all over his sheets. He was handsome and it fit him perfectly. Later on, I bought it for my husband. Made him smell divine and he loved how I would skim my nose along his neck and chest while taking it in. Very sexy. Not loud or overly forward, just simply delicious sexy!

heckoez

please someone tell me, is it soapy ? i don't like soapy scent. is it similiar to Safari for Men by Ralph Laurent ? cause i love Safari. but too bad Safari is discontinued in my country, Indonesia...thx

cytherian

Indeed, a fresh fougere it certainly is! Must be something with the lime note that works so well.

(My bottle is vintage, with the opaque black & white plastic shell)

This has a lot of notes in common with Tsar. And... well, I do not care for Tsar (too soapy). Jazz is "just right". I thought perhaps I just didn't care for the lavender, coriander, nutmeg, artemisia, and oakmoss accord. But Jazz somehow mixes things up a bit differently. It reminds me a little of Gucci Nobile, a favorite.

The Prestige version is even better, with heaps of sandalwood. But wow... basic Jazz is great too. You can definitely have both in your wardrobe and not feel like you've got duplicates.

danny66

Im using jazz for 27 years. I loved it when i was 18 years old and the same now.... at 48 years old. Superb fragrance.
Long lasting.

wisconsinboy

I began concocting my own perfumes, and all of a sudden, as I was trying one that featured lavender and carnation, I thought "damn, this is that weird note in Jazz". The two flowers fight it out ontop of oakmoss, and from it is born a weird funky skanky smell. I love it. It induces a happy feeling in me.

gedlive

Wow, this is a great classic fresh fougere. It is 27 years old and smells so much like a contemporary favorite Tom Ford Noir edt. It is fresh and yet very cozy, well blended. Jazz and Tom Ford Noir edt have the best citrus floral herbal accord opening of any fragrance I have sampled.

I usually don't like sweet fragrances. With Jazz I don't mind the sweetness, with the natural herbs and spices, the sweetness some how gives a nice balance to the notes and excentuates the citrus fruity note.; frst sweet fragrance I like.

It is a jazzy improvisation of old school classic gentlemen's fragrance with the leather and tobaco. Yet the opening feels fresh contemporary. It's a great clash of contrasts, fresh spices with warm notes. I think I'm getting aldehydes in the mid that make the fragrance feel wet vs dry.

This could really be an important benchmark classic. It still holds on to the past , it may have come from fragrances like " Xeryus ", which was popular and proceeded Jazz by a couple years. But then it has that really modern fresh herbal top notes, that you find it later fougers such as Rive Gauche, and the very recent Tom Ford Noir.

TF Noir has more richness in the Oriental base notes but the citrus and fresh spicy opening is the same. I think Tom Ford is a great parfumer, but it seems like he takes old classics and makes them better. Like his Italian Cypress is like Z-14, and now I know where the idea for Noir came from, YSL Jazz.

With the Fall coming soon I was looking for a nice herbal fresh fougere and found TF Noir, now I'm happy to have Jazz for my colection. Its a bit redundant from Noir, and TF Noir is a bit better, and at the same price as vintage Jazz, if you get a good deal on ebay.

I've been wearing vintage YSL Rive Gauche recently and Jazz is so much nicer and more satisfying. Rive Gauche is of the same genre as Jazz fresh spicy fougere, but where Rive Gauche is a bit hollow with nice top notes and mid, Jazz has more complexity and nice woodier base notes that ground the fragrance.

Jazz is really one of the very best of It's genre in the past 30 years. Thank you Tom Ford for bringing it back and making it even better. (Tom Ford Noir edt).

Jazz is a bit more masculine, with tabaco and leather nuances. TF Noir a bit more powdery. I'm referring more to the drydown of both.

I had a bottle of this many years ago, early 90s. I found it quite unusual and it was probably a bit too mature for me at the time, a spotty teen who overdosed in it! At times over the years I have meant to buy another bottle but never got round to it and then the reformulation/repackaging and it smelt different to what I remembered (not in a good way)

Luckily I found an old style bottle (as pictured above) in a small chemist at a bargain price. Now I am older it smells even better than I remember.

A true classic.

My first ever cologne, a Christmas gift when I was 17 and had only lately got into shaving...this is such a good one to start with (I recommend it to teenage wearers) because it's clean, fresh, but with a nice spicy hint that keeps it interesting. If you are looking for a gift for a young man this Christmas then buy this: it has way more class than Brut or Old Spice, is much easier to wear than Kouros and even after 20 or 30 years it does not smell like an old man's Bay Rum cologne. It is also FAR more interesting than the multitude of oceanic, ozonic scents around today and stands out from these in a very classy way.

manos1965

It took me 25 years to discover it but better late than never.Fantastic fougere with very good projection and longevity .Ideal for automn and mature man.
Maybe the best fresh fougere ever made.

joenick68

Overall a good every day wear cologne.

Ad nauseam

Just a short note: YSL Jazz does not remind me of Tsar by Van Cleef and Arpels at all. They are different beasts. Jazz does make me think of the original Halston 101. There is a certain essence that reminds me of metal for some reason. I love Jazz and glad I still have a bottle. I still miss 101.

Edit: 10/01/2014 I get compliments from women in the office on this one. I hear "you smell so good" and "you smell very manly". I like when an attractive woman in the office tells me this and leans in to smell me. Isn't this mostly the reason we wear cologne?!?!

Guapo

Still do not understand why YSL stopped producing the original version. This is one of the top brand colognes. A classic.

mikedvd5588

Similar to Le Male terrible but i prefer this jazz vintage. So relaxing.... feel clean and fresh lavender.. hmmmm

Eddie2082

My first ever. Loved it.

KBF1982

The vintage version is amazing.

Rafael123456

Very clean and masculine. There is something quite stylish and dark about this one. It reminds me a smooth 90s gangster type. Remember Andy Garcia's character in Godfather part3 ?? Jazz is something he would wear... One of my all time favorite oldies...

mrobbo0812

My dad has had this as long as i've known and i've always liked the smell of it, now my friends (18-20 years old) have started using it and love it as well

Mr.Bobby.N

JAZZ is great.

People keep laughing when I tell them i still wear this scent (as though anything that isn't 'new' should be thrown away), but it's precisely why JAZZ (and KOUROS) are going strong decades later... they are perfect 'seminal' scents. They were hits for a reason.

For ALL occasions: work, weddings, summer, winter... really anywhere.

Released the same year as Cool Water, Jazz is sadly overshadowed these days by its flanker, Live Jazz. I've never tried Live Jazz, and I'm in no hurry to, although one day I certainly will. I wanted to own a bottle of Jazz for one reason, and one reason only: its fans feel much better about it now than they did in 1988. They don't feel that way because of a formula change (it has been reformulated, probably several times), but simply because the general nature of Jazz seemed rather commonplace and perhaps a little dull, back when it was surrounded by similar woody ferns in a decade chock full of woody ferns.

Fast forward to the twenty-first century, after a decade of uninspired Acqua di Gio clones and Cool Water rip-offs, and suddenly this artemisia-based fougere by YSL smells much better, an elegantly mature reiteration of "fresh." It opens with a bright spicy fougere accord, transitions into tobacco, wormwood, nutmeg, cedar, and a handful of other very dusky-smelling things, and ends on a sweet, musky amber, with a nice dab of moss (oakmoss is present in my bottle). Aside from an oddly urinous, slightly unbalanced herbal citrus note on top, I think this fragrance is perfect. I imagine coming back to it is like revisiting the movie Basic Instinct for a lot of guys. It seemed campy and crass the first time around, but today it's stylistically sleek and inspiring. Earthy-spicy fougeres are a part of every man's basic instinct, and there's even a nifty horn section in here.

Jazz is softer and less green than Tsar, but they're kissing cousins. It's good for autumn wear.

vonMises

I love this one, from the harsh opening through the wonderfully smooth development. A successfully balanced fragrance of spicy, woody, and floral accords, tinged with citrus. A perfect accompaniment to any event.

sasha_kosak

I've found this fragrance is rather similar to STDupont Pour Homme, especially in the first couple hours of wearing. But than the Jazz formula becomes disbalanced and I start feeling caustic citrus-coniferous notes which are annoying me. I have twofaced feelings to this cologne: good at the morning and awful after lunch. Maybe the cold weather play against me, maybe not...

This is a masterpiece, an art work. The One and Only issue

alepoz84

per i miei gusti una delle migliori fragranze tra quelle di Yves Saint Laurent da uomo...

ilian.evgeniev

Very good and different.
It is classic for me.

limited Edition

Jazz is my summer vacation by the beach , daytime casual cologne..I need something sharp and crisp as I leave my hotel leaving a trail of class and sophistication from the elevator to the lobby..the opening notes of lavender and corriander give me a burst of energy like no other.

Longevity : 3/5

Sillage : 3/5

Overall : 3/5

Its not what but how you wear it..have fun..

Ce11estion

I wore this in 1988 until the bottle (white and black plastic zigzag shaped) ran out, I remember it to be citrus sweet fruity and creamy, like a Male version of Gucci Rush. I couldn't imagine anyone wearing it these days as it had such a gimmicky 80's feel to it, even though of course there is a big revival currently.

tatagaldino

The Jazz, brings me back to the early 90s. The floral notes were strange in a masculine scent in Those Years, my mother wore Jazz. She thought it was much more feminine than masculine.
It Has Been proven that Jazz is timeless and conceptual. It is rather a male fragrance. The artemisia cries off and the drydown is wonderful, Jazz is not for anyone. He has class. Refers to the Jazz (musical style), the streets of New Orleans, mild climate, trumpet in the background.
I do not consider "dated," he has class, combines with romantic moments together. Family dinner.
Projection is between moderated and heavy
excellent longevity
A classic from the house Yves Saint Laurent

fuggerone

vintage version a pure explosion of classiness!

mmh6352

Old school warmy, mild spicy and woody notes. Long lasting with good projection.

orestes

One of my favourite fragrances before refolmulated,im lucky cause i have 2 sealed plastic bottles and one new i use,and i take compliments when i wear it,very foolish decision to reformulated

Zenith

Funny story. No one knows precisely where the name Jazz came from, and early on it was spelled Jass. One theory was that it was short for Jasmine, a type of perfume which was almost only worn by working girls in New Orleans with which the early jazz music was closely related. So they played "Jass" in their houses of ill repute until some cheeky kids started scrubbing the "J" off all the ads and drums, hence changing to the Z's.

Thought some people may find that interesting

As to the fragrance, very similar to Tsar, dark herbal notes prefectly suited to cold days and the older gentleman. Not a personal favourite and a little stuffy but not bad at all

oilman

this stuff is elegant.

Oktaviono

Love at the first smell !!
Adore it since 1991 with their black & white bottle, until now still my favourite

Migalex

This is one of the very worst fragrances I ever smelled, and tried it countless times, both on skin and on paper and the result is consistently the same. I wonder how they managed to get such an (extremely) unpleasant scent from such adorable notes like coriander and geranium. That is quite an achievement and I give them that. I wonder why they discontinued live jazz and not this one. Staying power is average, but the scent totally notorious, as I said, unique, I am sure, and quite a masterpiece of creativity and imagination.

Mohamed Abdennour

The fragarance though famous , It appears to me not the fragrance sought for a man .The fresh and Vibrant notes of corriander and its association with Geranium ,artemisia, cyprus ,and patchouli were to me nothing but an expression of the paradoxes of a complexe personnality which rounds between white and Black,Fresh and woody ,Clear and sombre, sensibility and power.I think that there would be no clear say on this perfume since it would give me no impression of what it really is ,and as the alternation of unbalanced components meant to convey richness ,encounter and multi ethnicity continue ,it would not reprsent me .

Bigsly

I agree with Luca Turin that this seems timid and overly complex, at least at times. I've only tried the glass bottle with plastic cap, so the original might be different. Jazz is nicely balanced, so if you fear heavy fougeres, you don't have to worry here, as that accord is not pronounced (though it's clearly present). It's not too sweet either. In some ways, it's "a little of this, a little of that," but it didn't get boring. However, it might if I wear it a few times so I'll have to update this review after future wearings. I haven't tried Tsar so I can't compare it to that one. It's hard for me to say what it should be compared to, because it possesses aspects of several "men's" fragrances I've tried. It's definitely not an "80s power" fragrance, though I can understand someone calling it a light version of that kind of scent.

UPDATE: I obtained some of the original, in that white and black plastic bottle, and find it to be really special. It has a kind of delicate intricacy that is missing in the clear glass bottle. The notes really seem to "dance," in a sense, and so the name is appropriate. The newer one is a bit of a dullard who trips over his own feet, but soon sits back down in the corner and doesn't cause disruptions. His conversation is pleasant but unremarkable. Get the original !

ronnie1975

For me the best YSL, underrated masterpiece
The reformulation is pretty bad though

MrMookie

@DaZed : Your right!
I feel the same way as you describe it if i think about Jazz.
Its one one of the few bottles i always ignore these past months and i own around 24 bottles.
To me its a very sharp citric, harsh, green, bit sour and very dry scent.
My wife dont likes it on me she finds it old smelling.

My positive side on it is that it smells very clean.

I used to think in my memories Jazz in the 90's as a more fruity and jazzy scent with a twist but it is more a scent for a mature conservative politician or counseler in the Washington area.

Its quality for sure NOT that i hate it but im not feeling all "that" when i wear it.

Green,bold,masculine.

Today I was able to sniff (finally) Jazz, I was looking for so long, I managed to buy a miniature, now I do not know how long this is around mignon (the package is antiquated) but the liquid is something truly sublime, i remember about 20 years ago i wrote down on a notebook of its ingredients found in a newspaper, and now here he is majestic, aromatic, dry and very elegant remembers opening Safari by Ralph Lauren (bubbly and explosive) right after i get swept by a very noticeable particular that have not been able to identify in the head, but whirls me something Drakkar noir, the persistence is high and the bottom gives me very showy notes of leather that I could feel it in a full-bodied scent that I had years ago Duke of Atkinsons in short I am faced with a scent with many facets, but as a pure diamond filtered sunlight in a sublime way.

I love this perfume.
It's very cool.
Although he's have a few years, still maintains a very modern style today.
It's a real perfume, in the sense that their longevity and projection are excellent.
I loved having one of these.
Highly recommended.

MrMookie

Very attractive and powerfull frag i had it back in 1990 it brings me good memories! i can here good life from inner city pumping out of the radio again! :-)
Also with a great drydown!
Im gonna buy this one soon as i have a 80's / 90's powerhouse wishlist of frags.

Not many FRESH scents out here today have this mega longevity! its on my skin for a fast 32 hours! still going strong and thats from one wrist spray.

update i bought a bottle and i tried it on a few times but im a bit dissapointed because i think the longevity is a bit fair.
maybe i had another tester?

Contessa01

This is a very sexy scent for a guy to wear. If a guy is wearing this I find myself doing a double take! A classic masculine fragrance from ysl and a personal favourite of mine.

mynameischarlie

I remember way back when I first smelled it I thought it reminded me of Eternity for Women but with a masculine spin. It smells like I thought Eternity for Men would have smelled before I smell the actual Eternity for Men.

jtd

Jazz is a great illustration of the point that the aromatic fougère of the 70s-80s had reached before Cool Water changed the rules. It has a warm spicy opening (cardamom, cinnamon) that plays against the artemesia that becomes noticeable at the end of the top notes. The artemesia holds strong and seamlessly ushers in the longer-lasting notes that define the heart and base, the coumarin, moss, cedar, tobacco.

Jazz has a major/minor chord interaction that maintains my interest as it unfolds. It’s a bit too blended to be one of the strident fougères like Azzaro pour Homme that preceded it and Troisième Homme that followed it. Still it is an aromatic fougère of the old school and feels warm and enveloping rather than limpid, fresh and sweet/tart like Cool Water.

Where would the aromatic fougère have gone without the ascendance of dyhydromyrcenol? Jazz, while lovely, seems like one of those genealogical lines identified by archeology that became extinct when the faster, more viable predator (Cool Water) was better able to cull its prey, the male herd of the late 80s/early 90s.

jtappenden

As with Fahrenheit,Xeryus & Kouros, this is a highly individualistic fragrance.Happy memories of many good times!

JohnMc

Another great offering from the house of YSL - it never ceases to amaze me how many stellar offerings one house like this can produce. The ingredients and flacon designs are often of the highest quality also. Appealing sweet citrus and musk top notes followed by florals and woods make this a keeper. Not too overpowering like some older scents, the comparison to VC&A 'Tsar' is a pretty good one. Definitely a next buy. Bravo YSL.

krmarich

Jazz was the second offering in 1988 for men by YSL in the 1980s with the first being Kouros in 1981. It wasnt as large as Kouros, but then, nothing will ever compare to it. Jazz was still very large and very potent. It was trend setting as well. I rushed out to my local mall and bought some EDT and several bath product that were offered.

I loved the heady florals, yet there was something about the closing that bothered me. I didnt smoke, so it must have been the tobacco. I only noticed this in the heat. Cooler night were just fine! Otherwise, it was a very traditional leathery fougere. Most of the time I would re-spray some before the closing and never notice it. Yes, it easily lasted 18+ hours.

This was one of the last giants from the 80s. Its later reformulation that I picked up in 2007 seemed more quiet. The closing lacked tobacco and contained minimal oakmoss. I was able to track down a vintage for comparison and indeed the changes are there. The original is from a time in my life that I would stay up drinking and dancing until 4AM. I guess the reformulation fits my life now that I am older. When I feel nostalgic, I give my vintage plastic bottle a spray and turn on some Miles Davis.

Heverton

Jazz opens up with some spices mixed with a herbal tone making possible to sense an acid aroma which thankfully doesn't last a long time.

After about 5 minutes, bergamot kicks in giving a citric chord to this fragrance which combined with a gorgeous floral heart, makes this a very clean and peaceful fragrance that projects good enough and stays for quite a good time on skin as well.

ION

I sampled "Jazz" today after I can't say how many years and I think it has been tweaked (one can verify this? even substantially).
I find it better now, less shiny, less "on your face".
I never particularly liked "Jazz" and I am all for the old bottle compared to the glass trasparent one of today (one must admit French knew how to sell their stuff artistically), but this is a quality product from the bottle and packaging to the smell so..
Do give it a "long" try before buying it however, as it might fool you due to its very attractive opening.

Adriana Candiotto

Woodsy aroma with floral touches and subtle, an interesting blend, manly but I confess that I love to use it, do not feel the sweet side of the shank of the cardomom and tonka, sandalwood are very involved by e cedar, a true classic that transports me to the top of 90 years, but a little nostalgic, fixing and great sillage.

yvankraft

Jazz is magic, makes me feel young and happy...
I love the leather note mixed with the English lavender. Jazz is simple and this simplicity is its very special charm. I don't mean it is weak, it is just not complicated, it is free and and frank... The bottle is very interesting, made in the shape of a double bass fingerboard, black and white like the piano keys, both instruments present in jazz music. Well done Yves Saint Laurent!

lipepimpol

begins this pungent, bright green and reminded me immediately of the tsar old fellow, with more nutmeg and cinnamon and lavender same.

but it is only the beginning, jazz dry down with a beautiful floral accord perfectly in tune with the aromatics, which here are more elegant.
Tsar while it is more green and seasoned jazz is more bright and floral!
similar finish wood, leather, amber ...
jazz remains bright, but the tsar abuses of patchouli and I do not like it much.

For me jazz is great!
one of the great creations
a timeless classic
worth it!

super silage
super longevity
super fragrance

or 4 thumbs up no doubt!

Got a tester from a lady in a small perfume shop. It´s called Lord John by Lord Hamilton. She said it was a stronger version of Jazz.
I have to test it some more, but it´s very good, and there is a chance she could be right.

Oh that's much better! I tried Jazz Live and hated it! So citrusy it burned my face.
But this classic lil party boy blows it away.
I will say that the bergamot overthrows the floral notes a bit, they're now obsolete, but it is softened by them and not too overpowering like the lemon in Jazz Live.

I think melon might have been a softer option for this scent that wouldn't have overthrown the florals, but thats just my opinion.

The spices are used with fun in mind, and the woods are used liberally and heartfelt.
Although I find this smell a lil tang on my own skin, so cannot justify wearing it, I would think it a good party scent for lighter skinned boys, off you go dancing with this one, k.
It's a very nice fragrance, but my nose couldn't enjoy it on, I know these scents and they give me headaches.

Go after it

missan

A bought a 100ml tester recently, dont´t know how old it is. It is a little different from the normal Jazz I have though. When wearing it I always feel that this is the best cologne there is.

Jazz, with a hint of Kouros.....

Powerful! I love this scent! For all ocasions, except warm days. Sillage 10, fragrance 10, longevity 10.

Its rather funny how i came across this fragrance, Ive been in love with a popular Japanese BL manga by the name of Jazz. The entire love story was based around this fragrance. At first i didn't believe the fragrance was real till i looked it up. I just ordered it online and should be getting it soon, i hope it can sweep me off my feet like the manga. And reading all your reviews lets hope i like it. Im a youngster when it come to classics.

eilismaireg

Well, guys, if any of you were teens/20's in the 80's I bet you wore this stuff.. and snogged a girl like me who loved it too!! A fab smell which brings back memories of discos and pubs filled with guys bathed in Jazz! I must smell it again, actually...

RobbieX

A real man's cologne an "old school" classic! Similar to Tsar. Jazz has a bitter citrus start but then it's fresh clean and long lasting. One of the best - well, it is YSL after all!

missan

A wonderful fresh more classic cologne.
In the same class as Allure Homme, but a little less sweet, more flowery. Very long lasting.
Update: It doesn´t get much better than this.

JeanMaurice

It'a one of the best of the 80's. Only for that I have to give a good note. It's spicy, flowery, woodsy... An all in one fragrance, well made YSL.

3.5/5

lade_di

i totally agree with cinslot, this is a real "woah" smell. A smell where, when you pass a guy wearing this you have to take a second look, not at the guy at the guy wearing that scent. You you tell when someone is wearing jazz.

instantjim

I find this one very fresh. The lavender is most prominent at first balanced with sweet citrus. Spices and musk are there as well. This is nowhere near as "in your face" as fragrances like Paco Rabanne, Kouros and the like. It doesn't strike me as particularly woody. There's something really classy about Jazz, it lasts well but does not overpower.

Cassiano

Another cologne that brings me back to college days, in the middle of 90’s, that was fashion, even before that time, when the bottle was still plastic and mimicked the keys of a piano.

Jazz is an exquisite scent, masculine and elegant, which contains notes of spices, in its output, making it very strong and pungent, if too much applied. At 1st sight, we've got nutmeg, cinnamon, coriander, cardamom and lavender, notes that are usually used in the areas of heart and base of many men's fragrances. We also have anise, bergamot and basil. In the heart of the fragrance, carnation, iris, jasmine and geranium, flowers that can be extremely masculine, according to the nuance that is applied in their extraction. Finally, oakmoss, tonka bean, sandalwood, cedar, tobacco and leather. Do I need to say something else?

The result, obviously, is a floral-spicy aroma, which is strong and has a base able to stand for hours without losing the crabs.
On my skin, I can't even use a lot because, rather than being a success, becomes an aroma that reminds me "smoke spiritual roller" and I really don't dig. But, applied discreetly, is wonderful!

m_pooka

I used to wear it when I was younger. Nowadays I don't believe it suits me anymore. Maybe because I'm older, maybe because it is too 1980's in my mind.
Although I agree it's fresh and romantic in some way, you can really get tired of it real fast.

perryforever

I'm a woman and I used to wear this. Because it's got a fresh citrus aroma on it's top notes I loved it. Better than the (present) Samsara I took back to get it!!

knightz

I really tried to like Jazz. I have even put it away for a couple of months to try later on my skin. Jazz has something very sour to my nose in it. It is cloying very quickly and I want to wash it off. I get lots of florals, but something in there puts me off. Possibly the Artemisia is what doesn't seem to belong in the mix. It seems this sour note is the only thing keeping this one masculin. Without the offending note I think I would like the floral scent, on a woman.

I didn't give up on YSL after Jazz, I also blindly bought Opium pour Homme EDP strength and it's one of the best ever.

Abbas

Fresh and romantic fragrence for men,im using from 1992 its still new and cool.
