Hand Hooked Rugs Exhibit
March 31–April 30
-
Traditional Newfoundland Rug Hooking is experiencing bit of a renaissance since the pandemic sent many people into the creative crafts arena . Our local display is a fine example of how rug hooking has evolved in a “ beauty from necessity “ manner. Hand hooked rugs were originally created by coastal women from a basic need of warmth for floors and beds, in old houses without central heating. The rugs hooked today hang on walls as decor in many houses, especially summer cottages. Recycling of materials for rugs is still popular, but many rug hookers also buy wool yarn and fabric to dye to hook various scenes, to accentuate the artists’ look. The rugs on display here are a mixture of traditional and contemporary work, all celebrating that fact that our craft is alive and well, and is still an intergenerational hobby in many families.
