The Lincoln Police Department presently has approximately 500 total employees (358 sworn, 150 civilian). The department maintains a police garage, emergency communications center, weapons range, weight training facility, classrooms, computer lab and criminal justice library.
 
Career Opportunities
Lincoln Police Department officers enjoy numerous opportunities to develop their careers. Along with the City's college incentive program and the department's in-service training, officers are able to compete for promotional positions. All promotions are based upon merit, as determined by a competitive promotional process administered by the City of Lincoln Human Resources Department.

A number of specialized positions in the department are available to qualified officers as openings occur. These specialized positions can be in the following units: Crime Prevention, Criminal Investigations, Education and Personnel, Family Crimes, K-9, Narcotics, Traffic Safety, Technical Investigations and others.
 
Selection Process
The selection process consists of a pre-employment written exam, a physical abilities test and an interview. Applicants who pass the interview will proceed to further testing processes. Candidates who successfully complete the final phase are offered employment with the Lincoln Police Department.

Duties
As a police officer with the Lincoln Police Department, you will have many responsibilities that embody the department's community policing practices.  These duties include building relationships with citizens, educating the public, fostering collaborative partnerships throughout the community all while investigating crimes, responding to calls for service and enforcing criminal and traffic laws.  These duties facilitate a problem solving environment while allowing for professional autonomy and the ability to give back to the community you serve.

Certified law enforcement officer applications may be reviewed by the Chief of Police and may be eligible to obtain Police Officer or Lateral Entry status prior to the completion of the Lincoln Police Department Academy. Lincoln Police Department's academy is certified through the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center. and follows the same admission requirements. 

Qualifications
Age 21 or older by June 1, 2022; a U.S. Citizen; high school graduate or GED.; no felony convictions; valid driver's license. All applicants who meet minimum qualifications listed will be scheduled for a written test.

Study Groups
Attending a study group conducted by the Lincoln Police Department will help in preparation for the written TABE test.  Applicants will be invited to attend a study session once they have completed their application.  All study sessions will be held at the Lincoln Police Department, 575 S. 10th Street, in Classroom A.

Physical standards may also be accessed through a provisional link at the bottom of the list of Law Enforcement Certification Standards. Chapter 8 of the Nebraska Crime Commission on Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice sets forth specific rules and regulations of which we must comply. If you do not meet these requirements you may be disqualified from our process.

Police Trainee:  $20.92 hourly.  Police Trainee's salary upon successful completion of Lincoln Police Department Academy, Police Officer monthly salary $4,948.15

(As of January 2022, Police Trainee: $21.60 hourly)

Nebraska certified police officer's salary will be commensurate with their years of experience:  $28.54 - $40.35 hourly.

To be eligible for insurance benefits, employees must work at least 30 hours per week.

To be eligible for the retirement plan, employees must work at least 20 hours per week.

Temporary, seasonal, and unclassified employees are not eligible for benefits.
