SEPTEMBER 1, 2021 — The University of Texas at San Antonio is being recognized for its affordability by the Washington Monthly’s 2021 College Guide. The annual guide placed UTSA in the top 40 for its list of Best Bang for the Buck Colleges in the southern region.
UTSA ranked at No. 40 out of 211 southern colleges in the United States, and placed No. 19 amongst 70 other Texas institutions.
The Best Bang for the Buck Colleges rankings serve as a guide for students looking to obtain a degree at an affordable price. The rankings, which highlight colleges from five regions—Northeast, Southeast, South, Midwest and West—are based on the publication’s criteria for determining social mobility.
As a Hispanic Serving Institution, UTSA is focused on cultivating an environment focused on student success. The university is on the track to becoming a Hispanic-thriving, multicultural institution where students from all backgrounds can excel.
Washington Monthly used a variety of factors to build their rankings. It assessed each institution’s eight-year graduation rate. It also compared the institutions’ reported graduation rate to their predicted rate based on their percentage of Pell grant recipients, percentage of students receiving student loans, admit rate, student body demographics, number of overall and full-time students and whether the institutions were primarily residential.
The publication also looked at the percentage of graduates above 150% of the poverty line, the net price of attendance for families below an income of $75,000, the percentage of loan principal remaining five years later and the predicted principal remaining. Many of these factors were used to showcase the colleges’ commitments to educating a diverse group of students.
UTSA also earned a spot on Washington Monthly’s National Universities list, coming in at No. 149 out of 391 U.S. colleges and No. 5 out of 22 Texas schools. The National Universities list, which features four-year institutions that award a significant number of doctoral degrees, is measured on social mobility, research and an emphasis on promoting public service.
Washington Monthly publishes its “Best Bang for the Buck” rankings annually, in support of its interest in affordability for students from lower- to middle-income families.
