4.  Updates from ELTSH’s Early Career Framework team:

ELTSH’s Early Career Framework Full Induction Programme (ECF FIP), with lead provider UCL, is delivered by a consortium of local partners including Mulberry School for Girls, LETTA, Hackney Teaching and Schools Alliance, Tower Hamlets Education Partnership and Hackney Education.

Information for ECT Mentors working with us:

It was great to meet some more of our mentors in a recent 'Mentor Meet'. We will be offering another opportunity next term.

We hope you have enjoyed this half-term's self-study opportunity. For those who haven't had the chance yet, the materials are in Week 1 of the Module 2 folder on UCL Extend.

For more information about the ELTSH ECF FIP, please contact ecf@eastlondontsh.org.uk

Information for ECTS working with us:

Thank you for your recent feedback in the End of Module Completion Form. We were delighted to hear from the ECTs on the programme that:
  • 92% Agree or Strongly Agree "I am more confident in enabling pupil learning as part of my ongoing practice following engagement with this module"
  • 93% Agree or Strongly Agree "I have made positive changes to my classroom practice as a result of engaging with this module"
We're really pleased that Module 2's focus on knowledge, curriculum and learning has enabled our facilitators to really tailor the subject and phase-specific cluster meetings for their ECTs.

We look forward to reviewing your learning at the end of the term in your online learning communities when you will have the chance to plan for the 'tricky concepts' you are teaching. Your local cluster leads will be in touch with you before the session to share a reminder and Zoom links.

5.  ELTSH Appropriate Body Services updates

ELTSH, working with LETTA, is supporting Induction Tutors and ECTs with the statutory requirements of Induction through our work as an Appropriate Body.

We were delighted that the two LEA Appropriate Bodies were able to join us for our recent Induction Tutor drop-in session to ensure that all the schools we are working with collectively have the support they need.

The first Progress Review Report is due on 3rd December for ECTs who started in September. We have shared guidance with Induction Tutors through our AB newsletter, a video 'walk through' and through our handbook. All of these are available in the Resources Area of ECT Manager. Do get in touch with us if you would like further advice.

The Reading Framework focuses on phonics, reading for pleasure and early language development. During the afternoon, participants will engage with the content of the Framework, including:
  • The importance of reading and a conceptual model
  • Language comprehension
  • Word reading and spelling
  • Children at risk of reading failure
  • Leadership and management
  • Building on the foundations with older pupils – a summary
Opportunities for discussion and reflection will be built into the session. Participants will be invited to consider their own/school practice and identify key actions.
This session (on Thursday 3rd February 2022) will be particularly suitable for Senior Leaders, Early Years practitioners and Reading Leaders. It will be facilitated by Clara Breakwell (New Vision English Hub Lead) and Katherine Roberts (Elmhurst Primary School Reading Leader). The session will take place at Elmhurst Primary School.

c) The following are other organisations that serve both Hackney and Tower Hamlets

East London Research School is offering a free programme of online webinars for schools in Hackney. Each webinar runs from 3.45pm until 5.15pm on Zoom. Click on the links below to sign up.

2nd December: Supporting children’s communication in the Early Years
  • How can we promote children’s communication in the early years?
  • In this session, Dr Julian Grenier (Research School Director) and Siobhan Campbell (Evidence Lead in Education) discuss the evidence from the EEF report, Preparing for Literacy.
  • How can we put that evidence into action?
  • How can we improve outcomes for disadvantaged children and give every child a brighter start?

7th December: Improving behaviour in schools, with a special focus on relationships and Ofsted’s research
  • With Ofsted’s recent review into sexual abuse in schools and colleges, relationships and behaviour are high on school agendas.
In this webinar, Siobhan Campbell (Evidence Lead in Education) will review the outcomes and recommendations of the review. She will also look broadly at the evidence around developing positive learning behaviours amongst children.

13th January: Introduction to cognitive science in the classroom
  • ‘One of the most important questions educational research can ask is how children learn. If we know how they process and retain information, we can adapt our approach to teaching accordingly and in turn, increase effectiveness.’ Professor Becky Francis, Chief Executive EEF.
This webinar with Dr Julian Grenier (Research School Director) and Siobhan Campbell (Evidence Lead in Education) will look at the strengths and weaknesses of current research. How we might apply this theory in classrooms?

27th January: Making best use of the EEF Teaching and Learning Toolkit
  • The EEF toolkits are accessible summaries of a wide range of approaches to improving teaching and learning. There is lots of evidence out there about what works in the classroom. But that body of evidence can be overwhelming and difficult to interpret.
  • The toolkits help teachers and school leaders who are making decisions about how to improve learning outcomes, particularly for disadvantaged children.
This webinar with Siobhan Campbell (Evidence Lead in Education) will help you to get the most from the Toolkits, with insight into how to make use of the new and updated features.

10th February: Metacognition: How can we support pupil’s metacognition to improve learning in classrooms
  • Evidence suggests the use of ‘metacognitive strategies’ – which get pupils to think about their own learning – can be worth the equivalent of an additional 7 months’ progress when used well.
  • However, while the potential impact of these approaches is very high, particularly for disadvantaged pupils, less is known about how to apply them effectively in the classroom.
  • This webinar with Dr Julian Grenier (Research School Director) and Siobhan Campbell (Evidence Lead in Education) will look at the evidence and consider practical applications in schools.
All webinars are suitable for all phases of education and for both school leads and classroom teachers.
The exception is Supporting children’s communication in the early years - this is for leaders and practitioners with a focus on nursery and reception.

We are the Science Learning Partnership for N&E London (your science curriculum hub).

It’s a real pleasure to be working with many Tower Hamlets secondary schools around KS5 science this year as part of a THEP project. We also work closely with Naomi Hiscock, who many primary colleagues will know, on primary science CPD across Hackney and Tower Hamlets.

If you or your school are looking for bespoke science CPD or school to school support around science, we offer a range of options including whole day and half day sessions, as well as all staff science training as a twilight or part of an inset day. One of the most popular primary options is for Naomi Hiscock to work with science lead(s) and SLT in the afternoon (during lesson time) and deliver a whole staff inset after lessons end.

For science help and support https://community.stem.org.uk/home is a great online forum.

Please contact hhammond@alexanadrapark.school for more information.

The superb Sandrine Bouchelkia from St Pauls Way Trust school in Tower Hamlets leads our online technicians meeting on 14th Dec, - this is fully funded and there are a few places left.

Each term we run a face-to-face network for each of the science specialisms and one for Post-Holders. These take place from 1pm-4pm and start with a networking lunch.
