The Friends are very appreciative of the 136 ‘friends’ that became members during the past year.  To increase our membership for the coming year we will kick off an October membership drive this Saturday. The Friends will host the “Biggest Little Pumpkin Give Away” Saturday, October 3rd, from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Come and pick up a pumpkin donated by Harbor Wear and a paint set donated by Cellar 152 for a fun craft project for the kids!  There will be cider and donuts from King Orchards for a yummy fall treat!  Join us downtown (at the bear) and meet some Friends!

Membership applications will be available Saturday at the event and mailed during the month of October. Please take a moment to fill out the application and return it with the $10.00 yearly dues. Your support is important to our continued success.

The Book Cellar is working to be prepared to reopen as soon as possible. Volunteers are needed to sort and shelve the books that have been donated during the past months.  If you could assist in this project please call the library at 231-264-9979 to make an appointment.  Volunteers will be social distanced and wear masks.

Alice Rubert has served as Chair of The Friends of the Library for the last year and a half. It has become necessary for Alice to resign at this time and Vice-Chair, Gabrielle Hill will assume the Chair position. The Friends are extremely appreciative of Alice’s professional, dedicated, caring and innovative leadership.

“Volunteerism is the voice of the people put into action. These actions shape and mold the present into a future of which we can all be proud.”  Helen Dyer

Cream of Mushroom Soup

INGREDIENTS

1/4 c. butter
2 8-oz. packages cremini mushrooms, sliced
2/3 c. sliced shitaake mushrooms
1 shallot, minced
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 tsp. dried thyme
4 c. vegetable stock
1/3 c. heavy cream
kosher salt
Freshly ground black pepper

DIRECTIONS
  1. In a large pot, melt butter. Add mushrooms and saute until golden, about 5-7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper and remove 1 cup of the mushrooms, reserving them to the side.
  2. Add shallot and garlic to the pot and saute until fragrant, 1 minute. Add thyme and vegetable stock and bring to a simmer. Cook until mushrooms are tender, about 8-10 minutes. Using an immersion blender, or working in batches in a regular blender, puree soup until smooth.
  3. Return soup to pot and stir in cream and reserved mushrooms. Serve.

From the Director's Chair

"Always look on the bright side of life. Otherwise it will be too dark to read."

I found this quote from an unknown source while searching for some inspiring words about finding silver linings in the clouds. We certainly have found some silver linings we want to celebrate.

First, thanks to a generous grant from Northland Library Cooperative we were able to buy 10 additional WiFi hotspots, bringing the total to 15. One of the hotspots is designated for Munson Telehealth purposes. In partnership with Munson's Digital Outreach Program we will have one hotspot available for patients to check out to facilitate a telehealth appointment. With the next round of Co-op grants we plan to buy Chromebooks that can be checked out.

We found out this week that Library funding was not cut by the state in the approved budget as we expected, but increased by $1 million. Libraries are even more inportant in times of crisis.

More good news this week informed us that we received a grant from the Library of Michigan to be part of the pilot program for Local Hop, a community calendar and event registration module that will be added to our website. Aaron Hill, our Program Coordinator/Technology Coordinator is attending the orientation webinar next week. We will have more information soon.

The creative and resourceful staff is coming up with all kinds of new ways to serve the public, and lots more ideas are in the discussion stage. We are closing on Friday, October 2 for a staff in-service day to look at the existing strategic plan, figure out what we can still do as outlined in the plan, and explore what we can do that nobody thought of pre-pandemic.

You may hear rumors or read newspaper articles about the turmoil and dysfunction at the Elk Rapids Library. Be assured the staff's top priority is to provide the best library service we possibly can to the community we serve. It always has been and always will be.
