Proportional Reasoning with a focus on Fractions in Years 4, 5 and 6

Fractions is an area of maths that is rich and complex: teachers can find it challenging to teach and pupils tend to have procedural understanding, finding it difficult to draw on and make connections between big ideas.
This project intends to develop mastery level proportional for KS2 pupils, through an in depth focus on the teaching of fractions and development of reasoning through the use of models and resources and research informed tasks and problems.
The project aims to develop teachers’ pedagogical approaches to develop reasoning in their classrooms, which can be applied elsewhere in the maths curriculum. The course will also support teachers in developing their subject knowledge so that they have confidence in planning, teaching and assessing for mastery of fractions.

EYFS Building Firm Foundations in Reception

Work Groups in this project are aimed at schools who are currently developing a teaching for mastery approach in KS1 and KS2. Early Years practitioners and senior leaders will develop their understanding of how EY best practice feeds into a teaching for mastery approach, and build firm foundations for all children so that they are ready to progress into Year 1. Participants will consider how to build clear progression in mathematical concepts and how to make these accessible to young children.

London Central and West Maths Hub are running two groups for this project. Although all sessions will start online, we hope that in time, some of the later sessions can be delivered face-to-face.

Group A – Led by Jonathan East (Primary Lead for the hub) at Ashburnham Community School in Chelsea. Flyer is
here and Application Form is here.

Group B – Led by Valentina Wilkins (Primary Mastery Specialist) at East Acton Primary in Ealing. Flyer is
here and Application Form is here.
NumberBlocks
(ONLY 1 SPACE LEFT!)

This project is designed to engage EYFS and Y1 teachers in some action research to develop the use of
Numberblocks (CBeebies Programme) as a teaching approach.

Numberblocks is a BBC TV series. In the series, the development of early number is informed by the NCETM's principles for teaching for mastery. In addition to the programmes, the NCETM commissioned the writing of teacher support materials for Series 1 and 2 – authored by Laurie Jacques, the Work Group Lead. New materials for series 3 and 4 are currently being written and extend into the Y2 number curriculum.

This Work Group will be online.

This Work Group is led by Laurie Jacques who is experienced PDL (accredited Primary PDL and CPS-S Holder as SMaR+ PD). She has extensive experience of running Maths Hub Work Groups. Excitingly, Laurie is also the contracted author for the NCETM Numberblocks teacher support materials for Series 1 and 2.

Good Practice Networks

Why not come and join one of our Good Practice Networks in your local area!?!

These meetings are collaborative – a chance to share pedagogy, curriculum approaches, current issues, resources and ideas for future projects that the Maths Hub could run.

We will be running Good Practice Network meetings in 5 different boroughs and a Good Practice Network meeting for Secondary schools too!

What is LLME? What about local areas?

People in the Local Leaders of Maths Education (LLME) are leaders of Maths Hub work in their local areas and lead their Work Groups from their own schools or in the local schools that they work with.  They are well supported by the NCETM, Maths Hub Leadership team and each other.  We all come together to learn and offer support so the professional development that is delivered is to a very high standard.

See
here for a full list of 2020-21 LLME where you can see what Work Groups they are running and from what school.
