Netflix will ship its final DVD on September 29, 2023, after which the company will have fully transitioned to being a streaming and download service.

Netflix started its days as a DVD-by-mail company competing with Blockbuster stores in the US. It shipped its first DVD, Beetlejuice, on March 10, 1998, and has since shipped over 5.2 billion discs, with the most popular movie being The Blind Side.

More than 40 million people have subscribed to the DVD service over the years, according Netflix.

After a 25-year run, it's over. The final discs will be shipped out in late September 2023.

- "After an incredible 25 year run, we’ve decided to wind down DVD.com later this year. Our goal has always been to provide the best service for our members but as the business continues to shrink that’s going to become increasingly difficult. So we want to go out on a high, and will be shipping our final discs on September 29, 2023," said Ted Sarandos, Co-CEO, Netflix. "To everyone who ever added a DVD to their queue or waited by the mailbox for a red envelope to arrive: thank you."

The closure of DVD.com will have no effect on Netflix's streaming business. The company is currently in the process of expanding it with an ad-supported plan and games for download.
