The Pride of Riverstone

Rate this book
A country at war.
A journey fraught with danger.
To find happiness, she’ll risk everything.
Including her life.

Five years after living the trauma of forced servitude, 21-year-old Ula leads an idyllic life as lady-in-waiting to the Queen of Praed. Content to live a sheltered life, she’s reluctant to leave her childhood home when the king and queen declare they’ll visit Ilano, the homeland of the people who invaded her country and left her toiling in the bowels of Praed Castle.

Determined to overcome her shyness, Ula makes new friends, endures heartbreak, and begins to forge her own path. But when an old enemy threatens hard-won peace, the entire continent unites for the first time in history. With war raging around her, Ula is forced to confront her feelings and face the most difficult decision of her life – to summon the courage to step out of her older sister’s shadow and seize control of her own fate.

This is the continuing story of the Daughters of Riverstone, a saga of women who are not content to stand by and allow a world of men to determine their destinies.

CW: This book contains depictions of pregnancy and miscarriage.

Mandy received her B.S. in Zoology from Washington State University and an A.S. in Veterinary Technology from St. Petersburg College. Clearly her life goals were not geared toward a career as an author. She is a Certified Veterinary Technician specializing in small animals. When she’s not saving lives, she’s weaving tales of strong women using their intelligence to pursue incandescent happy endings. The Rise of Riverstone is the debut novel in her medieval historical fantasy series, Daughters of Riverstone. She lives on the Washington Coast with her husband and their four children. Besides leaning uncomfortably over a computer screen, Mandy enjoys camping and hiking with her family, reading, and wearing out her dogs on the beach.

Review:

Before I start this, I want to say that there is a book before this. It’s called The Rise of Riverstone. It’s told in Ula’s sister’s point of view. It’s still very important to read that story first. This book takes place five years after the end of that book. I’m going to leave it at that.

Now that I got that out of the way, I’m going to get into my thoughts. Firstly, I have loved both of the books. I don’t think five star ratings do it enough justice. Rise really ripped all of my emotions into tiny little pieces and made me afraid that nothing good would ever happen to any of the characters we all want to root for.

That being said, I was a little hesitant getting into this book. I didn’t know how dark it would get. I wasn’t sure what to expect. I also didn’t love Ula as much as I did her sister. Nor did I love her viewpoint of her sister’s behavior. Her sister is a firecracker. We’re talking about someone who pretended to be deaf and mute to keep from talking to someone. If you want more about that, you’ll have to read Rise of Riverstone. I don’t make the rules.

There is a bit of a slow start. But I think that adds a bit of sweetness to the overall story. Also, I have to make commentary on how absolutely adorable the cover is. There’s so much attention to detail in it. Anyways, I fully recommend this book. But please make sure you read The Rise of Riverstone first! That’s very important.

I need help!
I loved it, and it was fun to read from Ula’s POV (Point Of View)
Was not expecting it to end the way it did,
I freaking loved this book, and now I am in a mental breakdown waiting for book 3 😭😭😭😭
The ending hit. I was crying. And I don’t know what I will do without book 3
Thank you Mandy for the copy!

A great sequel to this series. It was great to 'see' old faces and new. I'll admit at first I was a little disappointed as I was secretly rooting for Olim, but Ula made her choice and by the end I would have to agree she was right. I look forward to book 3 and Sulwen's story, but I would also love to hear the tale of Kit Renard or see how Olim's fates fared.

I first want to thank Travelling Pages Tours and the author for providing me with a copy of this book.

This was a fantastic continuation to the Daughters of Riverstone series. You could read it as a standalone if you wanted to, but you won't know about much of the background of Riverstone. This story felt very coming of age and I think I liked it even better than the first!

I LOVE this series so much!! THE PRIDE OF RIVERSTONE (bk 2) takes us back to the gorgeous epic fantasy world where Laria and Risteard are now married, happily settled into their roles as king and queen, and have five absolutely adorable children. I love series where we get to see the “after” part and while this is Ula’s book and her HEA, we also spend a good deal of time with Laria’s family and I’m glad for it. It's been seven or eight years since the war ended and peace was restored, but Ula is still a bit unsettled. She is now Laria’s ladies’ maid and cares for her nieces and nephews. She has two potential suitors in this book—one is her knight that guards her, Olim, from the kingdom of Ilano, where they travel to in this book, and the other, Finton, a young doctor from Ilano. Without spoilers, Ula must figure out where her heart lies. Some of my favorite moments in this—sisterly moments between Ula and Laria, flirting between Laria and Ristead, seeing what a wonderful father Risteard is with Sulwen, the medieval medicine scenes. Of course, we know peace likely can’t last forever, but there was a good balance of hope and longing in this book that hit all the right notes. I am excited to find out what happens when book three comes out! 5/5 stars.
