The Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins trailer is finally here, giving fans a look at the franchise’s live action return. Rather than continue the story from G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra and G.I. Joe: Retaliation, the new film will reboot the story with a new cast led by Henry Golding and including Andrew Koji, Iko Uwais, Úrsula Corberó, Samara Weaving, and Peter Mensah. Snake Eyes is scheduled for a theatrical release on July 23, 2021.
As the title suggests, Snake Eyes centers on G.I. Joe’s most famous ninja – the black-clad, silent warrior known for roughing up the evil agents of Cobra. The movie will show Snake Eyes’ early days, before he ever donned the iconic helmet. The film will also feature Storm Shadow, Snake Eyes’ longtime rival who ends up joining the forces of Cobra. With luck, that means some exciting battles between the two when Snake Eyes comes to theaters.
Thanks to the first Snake Eyes trailer, fans can finally get a glimpse at those coming battles. Hopefully the film can live up to the hype of the trailer and succeed where past live-action G.I. Joe movies fell short. Watch the new Snake Eyes trailer below.
Though the trailer is relatively short, it still includes a bunch of fun teases for what’s to come in the final film. Golding’s Snake Eyes is being set up for a full-blown origin story, and the action in the trailer – both from Snake Eyes and the other ninjas, and from other Joe characters like Baroness and Scarlett – is fast and stylish. There’s even a fun tease of Snake Eyes’ signature visored helmet from the cartoon, which Golding will surely put on by the end of the movie. As with any origin story, a big part of the fun will be seeing the hero put on their classic costume and fully transform into the character fans know and love.
Of course, after the lukewarm reactions to G.I. Joe’s last two cinematic outings, Snake Eyes has a lot to prove. The titular character featured heavily in Rise of Cobra, but he wasn’t enough to save that film from negative reviews. Will putting him centerstage in the franchise’s live-action reboot yield better results? Only time will tell, but if Henry Golding’s past work and the flashy action of the trailer are any indication, Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins could finally be a movie fans can be proud of.
