The ANC, which has so intently constrained the participation of the private sector in all the parts of the economy it believes should be the realm of the state, is about to be hit by a tsunami of market liberalisation.
The energy interventions that President Cyril Ramaphosa will announce to reduce load shedding will unleash the forces of the private sector into the electricity supply market in a way most definitely not envisaged by the ANC's official policy documents and positions, or by those idealogues in the national executive committee and cabinet who remain wedded to a large and powerful state sector.
The changes will also set Eskom on an accelerated path to rapid and irreversible change. The company, whose name has become a swearword in every household in the country, will be changed forever.
