The importance of experiential learning on student growth is well documented in STEM education literature. However, traditional perceptions of academic rigor suggest that students who are physically unable to study outside of the classroom are therefore unable to participate in field-focused learning experiences. This workshop will discuss universally-designed strategies to include students with disabilities in your classroom, laboratory and field activities.

This workshop will include a brief introduction to Universal Design for Learning in field instruction, followed by a small group, interactive session to discuss specific course or program planning.

Coffee and tea will be provided, along with a light snack for participants.

About the speaker:

Professor Chris Atchison (University of Cincinnati) specializes in Geoscience Education, including fostering full access and inclusion in the Earth Sciences for students and scientists with physical, sensory, and developmental disabilities. He is the director and founding member of the International Association for Geoscience Diversity, and is a recipient of the 2021 Geological Society of America Distinguished Service Award.
