Salary Grade: GN04 / Recruitment Range: $31,200.00 - $40,450.00.

This is an extended posting through May 31, 2022, for Transportation Worker I positions in Division 14, Henderson County.  Multiple Transportation Worker I positions will be filled from each extended county posting. Interested applicants will only have to apply one time to be considered for all our Transportation Worker I vacancies in each respective county during this time frame.  However, if an applicant is interested in applying for a Transportation Worker I position in more than one county, they will need to apply to each respective county posting for which they are seeking employment.  These are permanent NCDOT positions with full benefits including health insurance, retirement, vacation and sick leave, etc.  

Work in this class primarily involves the operation of standard hand tools, power equipment, vehicles, and heavy equipment utilized in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of roads and roadside features for the State’s highway and roadway systems. Other duties include inspecting, ensuring work zone safety, and participating in snow & ice removal. Work may include flagging and assisting with maintenance/repair project completion through the use of standard tools and equipment such as tractor with various attachments, curb machine, cutoff saw, dump truck, small wheel and sheep foot rollers, vibrator roller compactor, pulverizer mixer, and pneumatic tire roller; assisting paint crews, erecting road signs, and/or assisting Electronics Technicians with maintenance and installation of signals; operating hand tools for sign installation and replacement as well as dump truck, broom tractor, paint line removing machine, thermoplastic machine, trencher, and edge-line paint gun operation; vegetation control, debris removal, pushing snow, tractor with various attachments and mower operation, dump and flatbed truck operation, assisting in grass and wildflower installation and maintenance.

Possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License is mandatory for essential duties. CDL can be obtained through on-the-job training with a 60 day grace period to obtain a CDL Permit and 90 days to obtain a License.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Qualified Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Experience operating power tools such as chainsaw, weed eater, skill saw, drill, compactor, jackhammer, etc.
  • Experience performing manual labor
Additional Expectations:
Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position.  As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.  
Safety toe footwear is needed.
 
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school education General Educational Development Diploma; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements:
