6 Incredible Benefits of Dry Brushing the Body (Plus How to Dry Brush)

In recent years, the concept of dry brushing the body has swept the internet. So what’s all the fuss with this fad? → Maybe it seems too easy? → Too good to be true?  Some beauty claims definitely fall into these categories, but the ancient ritual of dry brushing the body is one you better believe, babe. This simple (and practically free!) practice only takes about 2 minutes of your time. The benefits of dry brushing are proven to boost beauty + wellness throughout your body.  Dry brushing has become a buzzword in the wider health world, but it still may conjure up questions in your mind. No worries – for many, it’s a new concept! There’s a reason it’s been around in ancient cultures for centuries. But if that’s not proof enough, we’re covering the top 6 reasons you should start dry brushing the body today. History of Dry Brushing the Body Many ancient cultures around the world participated in this practice to create soft, supple, glowing skin. Dry brushing the body is well known in Ayurvedic medicine (known by the name garshana). It’s even said that Cleopatra would begin her indulgent ritual by dry brushing the body and then moving on to a milk and honey bath – among other luxuries.  So when you’re dry brushing the body, embrace your royalty. ;) There are many different variations of the dry brush, but they all share a few things in common. Dry brushes are usually:  Made with natural materials like wood or bamboo handles Created with natural bristles from boars, palms, or similar textures Intended to be used on completely dry skin Meant to be used with light pressure as a gentle exfoliation Designed specifically for either the face or the body (and shouldn’t be mixed!) Later, we’ll explain more about how to dry brush so you can feel comfortable + confident you’re doing it correctly.  But first, let’s dive into the benefits of dry brushing – you don’t want to miss these.  1. Dry Brushing the Body Increases Circulation  Not to sound too dramatic, but circulation sustains us – blood flow is the life force within us. For real.  Your circulatory system is the pathway that supplies vital nutrients + oxygen to every part of your body. Not only that, it pushes waste and toxins out. So slow or stagnant circulation can cause some serious issues for your cells, organ functions, energy levels, and overall health.  Even though the skin is your largest organ, it's also the last to receive nutrients from the body. So dry brushing the body provides a much-needed boost of blood flow to keep skin nourished, clear, + radiant.  Increased blood flow = serious skin glow. 2. Dry Brushing the Body Provides Gentle Exfoliation Gentle strokes with natural bristles are all you need to reveal smoother, softer skin. Replace harsh, aggressive, or abrasive exfoliants that just aren’t necessary (and truthfully, could be doing more damage than good) with a dry brush. Dry brushing the body is far more gentle + supports your body’s natural healing capabilities, bringing nutrients to the surface and encouraging natural cell turnover.  Dry brushing the body effectively exfoliates + sloughs off dry, scaly skin (insert praise hands emoji), which improves skin's texture and tone. → An added benefit of dry brushing associated with exfoliation: it brilliantly preps skin to absorb moisture. Without proper exfoliation, you may slather moisturizer on top of layers of dull, dehydrated, and dead skin cells. Moisturizing in this way doesn't allow for nutrients to deeply hydrate and heal. Products also absorb better after dry brushing the body, resulting in truly moisturized and happy skin. Be sure to dry brush pre-shower and massage in Body Oil post-shower. → Another interesting benefit of dry brushing over traditional exfoliation: you don’t risk disrupting the skin’s delicate microbiome. Your skin has its own mini microbiome of necessary + beneficial bacteria. Over-exfoliating can damage this microbiome, also called the moisture barrier. This can result in irritated, inflamed, or dry skin because your skin has no “barrier” to lock in the moisture – or to keep out bad bacteria. Dry brushing the body is a win-win for making sure your skin deeply absorbs + uses the moisture you apply afterward. It works with you instead of against you. ;)   Speaking of things working against you – if you’re a lover of a good detox, you’re going to love number 3 in our benefits of dry brushing. 3. Dry Brushing Helps Detox the Body + Improves Lymphatic Drainage  One of the most powerful and important benefits of dry brushing is stimulating lymph flow + the drainage that follows.  Okay, “drainage” may not sound pretty, but we can't stress enough how essential lymphatic drainage is for radiant skin, a healthy body, and a happy self. That’s why we love dry brushing the body as a regular detox protocol. Your lymphatic system helps to detoxify your whole body and provide immunity against disease. But when this system becomes blocked, it can cause toxic buildup in your tissues – leading to issues like blemishes, rashes, irritations, and other skin conditions. Dry brushing the body utilizes light, simple strokes that stimulate lymph flow to flush out toxins + waste. It also clears pores, eliminating more toxins through sweat. With fewer toxins and more nutrients, you’ll experience: A strengthened immune system Less sickness  Increased energy levels Fewer areas of discoloration or damage to the skin Less skin sensitivity Add dry brushing to your beauty routine to promote radiant skin, a daily detox, and feel even more invigorated. Speaking of radiant skin, you can expect a change after just one session of dry brushing the body. Yep, get ready for improved skin complexion.  4. Dry Brushing the Body Improves the Appearance of Your Skin (+ Reduces Signs of Cellulite) If you’re looking for some instant gratification, you’ll love this dry brushing benefit. Similar to dermaplaning, another form of gentle exfoliation for the face, you’ll immediately notice a brighter, happier complexion. How?  You can thank the dry brush’s gentle, yet firm bristles for effectively removing dull, dead skin. Younger, fresher skin appears instantly. It was already there – it just needed a nudge. ;)  So we know dry brushing the body works to smooth away impurities in the skin – but what about the claim that it even improves the appearance of cellulite?  It's possible. While there’s no solid research on this topic yet, dry brushing your body is believed to soften fat deposits below the skin’s surface. This helps your body redistribute them and reduces the appearance of cellulite.  We also know that exfoliation can increase the natural production of collagen and rebuild the skin – making it stronger. So a boost in collagen + skin strength could definitely give areas of cellulite a more “plump” appearance (and make them less susceptible to “dimples,” aka cellulite).  Whether it’s a temporary effect (plumping + invigorating skin) or a long-term solution (removing toxins to rebuild connective tissue) for cellulite, the bottom line: dry brushing works. 5. Dry Brushing Supports Fascia Fascia is a thin layer of connective tissue that runs throughout your entire body (underneath your skin) to hold everything together. Like the lymphatic system, there are still a lot of unknowns.  But what we do know: just like muscles, fascia can develop “knots,” tightness/tension, and adhesions that can cause discomfort and keep the body from functioning optimally. The health of your fascia affects internal health since it’s connected to lymph, circulation, and other bodily functions critical for full-body health.  Dehydration and lack of movement are both known to affect fascia negatively. So as you can imagine, dry brushing the body can assist with both of these problems. Better flow and circulation, along with increased absorption, helps hydration within the body. And the gentle massage-like motions of dry brushing the body gently stimulate the tissue, working out adhesions and tension. Embracing the massage-like feeling you get from dry brushing the body, we especially love the last advantage in the benefits of dry brushing: calming the nervous system. 6. Dry Brushing the Body Activates Your Parasympathetic Nervous System Your parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for bringing your body into balance when you get stressed, anxious, or scared. Dry brushing benefits more than just the skin – it benefits the state of your heart, mind, and soul.  We all experience our fair share of stress – and we know it’s not good for our bodies. Why not incorporate a relaxing + rewarding practice at the end of a long day (or in preparation for a dreaded day)? Dry brushing the body creates gentle, rhythmic motions throughout the body that lull you into a more relaxed state by activating the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve extends throughout your body, sending signals (good or bad) to the brain. When you gently stimulate the vagus nerve through light, rhythmic touch, it sends positive, calming signals to your brain – and throughout your body. Now that you’re ready to get your zen on, here’s a short overview of how to dry brush. How to Dry Brush in 4 Easy Steps Let’s keep it simple. Dry brushing your body is really easy to do, so don’t overthink it. :)    Pick up a dry brush here if you don’t have one yet. Before showering, begin at your feet and dry brush your body upwards with gentle, short strokes – always towards your heart. Next, brush your lower belly towards your groin and your upper abdomen towards your underarms, then from your hands toward your heart. To finish, dry brush down toward your underarms to help flush out toxins + improve lymph drainage. Always use light pressure. The point isn't to scrub off your skin, but to gently and effectively get blood + lymphatic fluid moving. After showering, apply Body Oil + boost your skin's glow and your newfound energy. That’s all there is to it. Easy to do, easy to see results.  But here are a few extra things to keep in mind as you dry brush your skin: Just like any other tool, hygiene is key. Keep your brush clean by using a non-toxic soap once a week and leave it to dry with the bristles down to prevent bacteria from seeping into the wooden handle.  You can do it before or after a shower – there’s not really a “right” answer – but we recommend dry brushing your body before a shower to rinse off any residue + dead skin cells. But if you’re sweaty or just getting out of the ocean, lake, etc., you’re welcome to use your dry brush after a shower. Just make sure your skin is totally dry – and you may want to wipe it down with a warm washcloth afterward. Don’t overdo it on sensitive skin – though dry brushing is extremely gentle, you’ll still want to be mindful of areas with active inflammation, sensitive, or extremely dry skin. We’d recommend keeping your dry brushing routine to 1-2 times/week. Use very light pressure and focus more on the skin around affected areas to open up healing pathways + restore nutrients. Embrace Vibrant + Radiant Skin – All Over Oftentimes, personal care focuses on the face – but your body needs love too! We love dry brushing the body to bring a full-body glow and undeniable confidence. Whether it’s the dead of winter and your skin is dull and congested, or it’s the middle of the summer and you want to encourage a vibrant glow, dry brushing your body is an excellent way to practice self-health.  You’re improving your skin and your health – two birds with one stone. But fair warning: you just might become obsessed with this beauty ritual – and your new skin. ;) Shop our Body Dry Brush here.  XO Pin your fav blog post below:

Video Tutorial: Dry Brushing 101

One of my tried + true tips for smoother, healthier and more radiant skin is dry brushing. And I’m going to show you exactly how you can incorporate this ancient ritual into your day-to-day. This simple practice takes less than 2 minutes (perfect for the mamas + beauty minimalists!) and the benefits of dry brushing are proven to boost beauty + wellness throughout the entire body – not only supporting glowing skin, but your overall well-being. Here are just a few of the reasons why dry brushing should become a staple in your self-care routine: Improves circulation. Our circulatory system is the pathway that supplies vital nutrients + oxygen to every part of our body – and pushes waste and toxins out. Dry brushing provides a much-needed boost of blood flow to keep skin nourished, clear and radiant. Exfoliates: Gentle strokes with natural bristles are all you need to reveal smoother, softer skin – no harsh exfoliants needed. Dry brushing sloughs off dry, scaly skin which improves skin’s texture + tone and preps skin to better absorb moisture. Powerfully detoxifies: The light, simple strokes of the dry brush stimulate lymphatic drainage + flow to flush out toxins and excess fluid to help strengthen the immune system, minimize inflammation and increase energy levels. Improves the appearance of skin: Dry brushing has been believed to soften fat deposits below the skin’s surface to actually reduce the appearance of cellulite. Whether it’s a temporary effect (by plumping + invigorating skin) or a long-term solution (by removing toxins to rebuild tissue), the bottom line: dry brushing works. Convinced yet? Great! Go grab your dry brush (if you don’t have one, you can shop ours here) because I’m about to show you how to dry brush in just a few simple steps. Here are a few more tips to remember to make sure you get the most benefit from dry brushing: The best time to dry brush is before showering (so you can wash away dead, dull skin cells you’ve exfoliated). Brush upwards with gentle, short strokes – always towards your heart. Always use light pressure. The point isn’t to scrub off your skin but to gently, effectively get blood + lymphatic fluid moving. And that’s it! A brand new beauty ritual that’s super simple, but seriously makes a big difference. Better flow = brighter glow, inside and out.

The Ultimate Guide to Using a Dry Brush: Everything You Need in One Place

At Primally Pure, we love dry brushing – if you don’t know about it, you should.  Whether you own a dry brush, you’re new to the concept, or you’re picking it back up, this guide is meant for you. We’re giving you information on everything this magical, portable little tool is capable of.  A dry brush is your one-stop-shop tool for bringing nutrient flow + rejuvenation to the skin. And while we’ve covered this topic a few times before, our community keeps asking for more (and we love it!). So we felt it was time to give our community an in-depth guide for all things dry brushing. If you’re like us, this one simple concept will keep you coming back for more: A dry brush boasts versatile benefits but quick, easy-to-follow directions. And believe us when we say: it does much more than just exfoliate your skin. Our holistic esthetician swears by the ancient beauty ritual of using a dry brush. We love it for busy moms or days when you’re spent and need a quick routine. You’ll want to pick up your dry brush asap after reading this because better flow = better glow. History of the Dry Brush Understanding the history behind the famous dry brush brings some perspective on why it supports full-body health. The dry brush has its roots in the ancient Indian medical system: Ayurveda. Ayurveda takes a very similar approach to holistic thinking, looking for the root cause instead of fixing a problem on the surface level. It’s about preventative care whenever possible. And most importantly, it emphasizes the power of focusing on whole-body health – giving significance to body, mind, and spirit.1 Since ancient times, the dry brush has been used to calm + cleanse the body from toxins and cellular waste (called ama) through a rubbing action called Garshana.  Science has proven the power of Ayurvedic practices. So if you’re feeling skeptical, rest assured there IS data behind the roots of this ancient practice.2 Traditional Chinese Medicine (which many of our principles and beliefs align with) also utilizes a dry brush as part of a routine to maintain proper lymphatic flow. Why should you care about lymphatic flow?  Lymphatic flow is a major component of your body’s immunity and long-term health. The dry brush has been around many cultures worldwide, proving its validity and results. You can find it in the routines of ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Chinese, Japanese, and Scandinavians.  This traditional dry brush has maintained its physical form, still being created from natural elements like bamboo and boar hair. There’s something significant to be said about modern-day tools that still have the ability to connect us to ancestral wisdom. Dry Brushing Benefits Dry brushing is best known for its skin-improving abilities these days. But there’s a fascinating world of whole-body health benefits at your fingertips with a dry brush. To us, this list alone is motivation enough to practice this self-health hack on a daily basis. → Removes stagnant waste from the body – your lymphatic system collects waste. Still, there’s no “pump” to get it started, so using a dry brush kickstarts the elimination of the trapped (stagnant) waste to protect against sickness + disease. This is big – your lymphatic system is responsible for:3 Recycling nutrients back into the bloodstream Filtering out waste and harmful substances Sustaining immunity Maintaining homeostasis → Improves immune system function – the lymphatic system makes up most of the immune system, so it’s no wonder your immunity and the lymphatic system are closely linked. So using a dry brush can directly benefit your immunity.→ No harsh exfoliation – some treatments (like intense laser treatments) or conventional exfoliating products (like salicylic acid in acne products) can over-exfoliate the skin. Improper exfoliation disrupts the skin’s microbiome and can cause damage, inflammation, acne, or other undesirable skin conditions. Dry brush exfoliation, on the other hand, is gentle but still gives you the desired results (plus more!). → Reduce wrinkles – though we don’t view wrinkles as a bad thing, it’s an added perk to the other health-boosting benefits of a dry brush. We’ll never be mad about aging gracefully.→ Protects skin moisture barrier and microbiome – the skin barrier plays an essential role in your skin health, so using a dry brush supports this form of gentle exfoliation that keeps the good stuff intact.→ Better absorption – this benefit is one of our favorites – gentle dry brush exfoliation means dead skin cells are brushed away, and the fresh skin is ready to absorb all your nourishing products.→ Stimulates cell turnover – we love a gentle, natural cell turnover for smoother, brighter skin. Light manual dry brush exfoliation helps with skin tone, texture, and discoloration (like melasma or hyperpigmentation).→ Encourages relaxation throughout the body – the soothing strokes of a dry brush activate the parasympathetic nervous system to calm + ground you. Types of Dry Brushes A dry brush comes in two main categories: a full-body dry brush and a facial dry brush. We love using both, but it’s important to understand that each plays a specific role. Dry Brush for Body A full-body dry brush can come in a few different forms – some with wooden handles, others with loops. The thing they all have in common is firm bristles.  A full-body dry brush gives you all kinds of benefits, but here are a few of the best: Increased circulation (less cold feet and hands) Boost of energy Reduced cellulite Soothes itchy areas (like a good back scratch) Better digestion Whole body detoxification  Smoother skin, less dry/flakiness It’s important to note that a body dry brush is specifically designed for the right amount of exfoliation and space you’ll cover. So you don’t want to mix and match – your body brush is only for your body. Leave your neck and face out of the equation.  Dive deeper: Check out this tutorial or this blog for more details on dry brushing your body. Facial Dry Brush A facial dry brush functions the same as a body dry brush, with more gentleness. It’s a small, handheld brush with small, fine hairs. Facial dry brushes are intentionally formed with super soft bristles that respect the integrity of your skin while still providing exfoliation magic. These are our favorite boosts you’ll experience from a regular routine with your facial dry brush:  Products absorb better Reduced milia, blackheads, and inflammation Brighter, clearer complexion  Reduced puffiness  Smoother texture Like the body brush, it’s essential to use a dry brush specifically for the face. Your face wouldn’t tolerate the firm bristles of a body brush. Your skin around your face and neck is thinner and more delicate – requiring softer bristles.  Dive deeper: Check out this tutorial or this blog for more details on facial dry brushing.    Tips + Advice for Dry Brushing Once you pick your dry brush, there are a few things you should know first. You can find specific instructions in our specialized posts, but here are a few major tips + pieces of advice.→ We like to dry brush our bodies before hopping in the shower – but when you do it is totally up to you – consistency is the key ;). Many people get hung up on this detail, but it’s really down to personal preference. We like that any dead skin cells you exfoliate will rinse off in the shower, but if you feel particularly sweaty or prefer to do it after the shower, that’s great too! → Dry brush your face after cleansing/rinsing with water and patting skin dry – for your face, this is an important distinction. You’ll want to wash off any makeup or dirt to avoid pushing impurities into your skin. If you want a similar “rinse” feeling, you can use a cotton round with our everything spray to wipe away any dead skin cells after using your dry brush. → Only dry brush on DRY skin – dry brushing on wet skin will not give you the same results, and it would be much harder to sweep the bristles along the skin. → You can dry brush once a day (or less) – once a day will give you the optimal results, but if you don’t have time or have sensitive/inflamed skin, opt for 1-2x per week.→ Always work around inflammation – with any open wounds or areas of irritation or bacteria build-up, you’ll want to avoid directly brushing on top of these areas. Avoiding these areas doubles to keep germs at bay + lets the skin heal undisturbed. Stimulating the surrounding areas brings healing to the skin where needed – your body is intuitive.→ Don’t forget to do a sweep/drain at the end – a final sweep is vital to direct the lymph flow in the right direction. This ensures that toxins are filtered out of your body instead of staying trapped.→ Keep your brush clean with routine washing – Depending on how often you’re dry brushing, we typically recommend washing your brush weekly. Use a gentle, non-toxic soap (like our seasonal Hand Soap or Branch Basics) and let it dry with the bristles down so water doesn’t seep into the wooden handle. If you’re on the go or your brush needs a refresh in between washes, spritz bristles with our Hand Sanitizer. These are some of the biggest pieces of advice you’ll need to get started, but feel free to keep learning from the various tips and content throughout our website and social media. The Holistic Skin Tool We Can’t Get Enough Of This magical little brush will do wonders for your skin – but also for whole-body health.  At Primally Pure, we believe in the power of practices that benefit our skin yet ground and center us. Because health is a full-body experience, and your skin is a reflection of what’s inside. We want to give you all the resources for starting your journey with a dry brush practice, so you get only the best results. We’d love to hear how it goes for you.  XO   Sources: National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health | Ayurvedic Medicine: In Depth National Library of Medicine | Double-Blind, Randomized, Controlled, Pilot Study Comparing Classic Ayurvedic Medicine, Methotrexate, and Their Combination in Rheumatoid Arthritis Cleveland Clinic | Lymphatic System   Pin your fav blog post below:

Dry Skin? Here's How To Care For It

Our inbox, Instagram DMs and website live chat are flooded every single day with similar questions: “I have (fill in the blank) skin. What’s the best way to care for it?” So we’ve put together a new blog post series to help you navigate the products, practices and routines that best support where your skin is at today. With the ever-evolving nature of skin depending on seasons, stress levels or lifestyle shifts, you may find yourself moving from one post to another and taking a few topical suggestions from one and a couple self-care practices from another. And we 100% support that. 🙂 Acne-prone skin? Click here for the best ways to care for adult acne, problematic pre-teen skin and every breakout inbetween. Sensitive Skin? Click here for tips to care for sensitive, stressed, damaged skin in need of some serious TLC. While we’ve compiled our go-to solutions for caring for specific skin conditions, we always recommend letting your skin guide you. Feel it out, play with products and enjoy the process! Alright, here we go, post #3. Our top tips for dry, dehydrated, desert-looking skin thirsty for long-lasting hydration. HYDRATED SKIN PRACTICES Has your skin been looking like the Sahara Desert lately? Seriously dry skin is a pretty common skin condition as diet, UV damage, genetics, aging, stress levels, hormonal imbalances and overall health all influence the integrity, strength and hydration of our skin. And of course, as seasons change and temperatures drop, so can our moisture levels. The health of our skin is daily bombarded by chemicals + harsh conditions which can strip our outermost layer (the epidermis) of fatty acids – which are essential for balanced skin function. It’s so important to take an inside + outside approach to heal and hydrate our skin to replenish and rebuild the skin’s delicate moisture barrier. From slight dehydration to severe dryness (think cracked, bleeding, painful, itchy, red patches), moisture that lasts and actually, deeply heals is sought after by so many. Here are a few ways to provide your skin with the healing it needs + support hydration from within: Cut back on caffeine: Caffeine (and also alcohol) are key culprits in dehydrating + depleting the skin’s moisture levels. Swap out your flavored latte or evening nightcap for the healing benefits of herbal teas. Power-packed with the restorative benefits of plants, herbs and adaptogens, herbal teas help to replenish hydration, plus provide several other benefits for the body and mind! Eat your water: Make your meals more moisture-rich by focusing on foods with high water content, such as cucumber slices, strawberries, a salad full of leafy greens, fresh herbs, squash and other seasonal root vegetables. And always remember, healthy fats = hydration! Our cell membranes are made up of almost entirely fats so try to find ways to add in healthy fats (like avocado, EVOO, wild-caught salmon + walnuts) for a boost of hydration at every meal. Dry skin supplements: Even with a hydrating diet, sometimes skin still needs a bit of boost and adding in a supplement that helps to improve moisture levels is a must. This supplement is a staple for rebuilding dry skin from within and seriously enhances hydration with hyaluronic acid. Below are even more holistic tips that don’t have to do with the food on your plate, but make a big difference for dry skin states: Facial Dry Brushing: Of course you want to exfoliate your skin to help remove dead, dry skin cells, but swap out potentially harsh, damaging scrubs for facial dry brushing instead! Gentle bristles provide the perfect amount of exfoliation without damaging delicate facial skin. Soak: This moisturizing bath soak contains an aromatic and skin-softening blend of soothing botanicals (like rejuvenating rose and lavender) along with coconut milk that repair dry/damaged skin, balance pH levels, and detoxify the skin + body. Soften your skin and soothe your mind all at the same time – the perfect dry skin therapy! Gua Sha: Gua Sha has been getting a lot of hype in the beauty world recently – some say it’s even better than botox! It’s the perfect holistic remedy for boosting hydration and a healthy glow by increasing the flow of blood, oxygen and vital nutrients to the skin. With the stone’s intentional design for smoothing, depuffing and plumping, Gua Sha is a game-changer for dry, dehydrated skin states. Shop our pure jade Gua Sha stone here! HYDRATED SKIN PRODUCTS Now that we’ve looked at the foundations for healthy and hydrated skin, now it’s time to actually apply your skincare. Dry, dehydrated skin states are more prone to feeling tight, irritated, flaky, and just plain uncomfortable – and the right products can help to provide some serious relief for these signs of dry skin. Our goal is to not just coat the skin to appear to be healthy and glowing, but to truly transform it. Maintaining skin’s moisture is a top concern for many of our readers and the cosmeceutical industry has created a myriad of lotions, oils, ointments, creams and butters. But with the chemicals saturating ingredient lists, we’re opting for more natural remedies to restore moisture and to prove it is possible to boost hydration and renew skin with non-toxic ingredients. This is our tried + true guide for a simple skincare routine that powerfully supports dry skin: Step 1: Cleanse. Rebuilding hydration starts with the first step of your skincare routine – cleansing. Harsh cleansers, surfactants, harmful ingredients and detergents can seriously damage the skin’s natural moisture barrier. That’s why we’re completely obsessed with the Oil Cleansing Method for strong, healthy and hydrated skin. Using this cleansing oil (specifically formulated for dry skin!) deeply cleanses and purifies pores – without over drying the skin. Step 2: Tone. Applying moisturizer to desert-looking skin isn’t actually the most beneficial way to boost hydration. The best way to enhance the absorption (and the benefits!) of your Beauty Cream is by spritzing a hydrosol beforehand. Unlike harsh astringents and harmful alcohols, hydrosols hydrate and stregthen the skin’s protective barrier. A simple spritz of this Geranium Complexion Mist allows hydration to soak even more deeply into the skin and provides much needed dry skin relief. Step 3: Treat. This targeted facial serum contains a vitamin and antioxidant-rich blend of the most potent + healing oils our planet has to offer – and is a *dream* for dry skin. Ingredients such as Astaxanthin, Green Coffee Oil and Prickly Pear Seed Oil increase collagen levels, soften fine lines + firm skin, stimulate cell turnover, and deeply nourish to promote a vibrant, healthy appearance. Plus, it’s deep, full floral aroma packs a serious punch of aromatherapy properties. Step 4: Hydrate. Conventional lotions are often filled with chemicals that appear to be hydrating, however, these products often coat or clog (i.e. suffocate) your pores. Moisturize dry + dehydrated skin with real, vitamin-rich ingredients that are similar to the make up of your skin (i.e. oils and healthy fats!) so that healing properties can actually penetrate into the deeper levels of the skin to rebuild + retain moisture. These Beauty Creams leave your skin truly glowing with health and hydration. We hope these tips help your skin say goodbye to dry desert days, and hello to deeply hydrated skin. And stay tuned for more skin-specific products + customized support launching soon to care for your dry skin!

Start The Swap: Dry Shampoo DIY, Tips + How Tos

The products you use on a daily basis are a big deal - because applying endocrine-disrupting chemicals and artificial fragrances found in conventional products can contribute to some serious health conditions over time. But we get it, you might have some hesitations when it comes to overhauling your products, so we want to help you start the swap! All month long, we’re doing a blog series to empower you (and those you love!) to detox your products and #starttheswap - with our top product swaps, expert tips + how-tos from our Holistic Esthetician and DIY recipes from our Founder that you can make with simple ingredients you have stocked in your kitchen! Ready to start the swap? Let’s dive in! This week’s product swap: DRY SHAMPOO. Dry shampoo was a product I knew I wanted to develop early on for two reasons. One, because conventional dry shampoos are some of the most toxic products out there (anything aerosol, and also many products that come in powder form, are not only hazardous to use on the skin but also come with inhalation risks). And two, because I don't have time to wash my hair every day, or even ever other day (okay and usually not even every three days!). So this was a big one for me! Handcrafting clean, non-toxic products is at the core of our brand. But above all, what we care about most is empowering you to remove the toxic ingredients from your products (whether it’s through the DIY recipe below or restocking your PP favs!) so you can live a healthier life and show up as the beautiful, abundant human you were created to be. WHY SWAP Dry shampoo has become a daily staple in most of our hair care routines (by Friday our hair is 90% dry shampoo - you too?!). It’s a dream for those of us who don’t like to shower daily or for busy mamas who hardly have a moment to themselves - but there’s some serious dirt associated with traditional dry shampoo. Most dry shampoos on the market are aerosol-dispensed, propelling butane, isobutane, and propane (hence: the “FLAMMABLE” warning on the tube 😬) into the air and your hair, posing serious risks for your respiratory and hormonal systems - and not to mention our planet. And even powdered conventional dry shampoos contain highly toxic talc, synthetic fragrances and harmful chemicals. Especially with repeated exposure (did we mention this product has become a daily staple?), it’s time to start the swap to a much healthier option for your hair and your health. EXPERT TIPS + HOW-TOS There is so much hair + scalp goodness packed in this non-toxic dry shampoo! Oil-absorbing kaolin clay and arrowroot powder freshen up any style while baking soda brings a boost of texture and volume (an added bonus that our fine-haired friends will love!). Plus its scented with only organic essential oils of grapefruit, lavender and peppermint that leave your hair smelling shower fresh and also offer natural cleansing properties, scalp soothing benefits and stimulates hair growth (yes, please!). This is truly one of our favorite product swaps and superpower hair products - and you don’t have to sacrifice your health or your hairstyle. Here are 3 ways to use dry shampoo: Refresh second or third (or fourth!) day hair: A few shakes absorb excess oil and extend your style in between washes. Clean hair: Yup, your hair doesn’t have to be dirty to benefit from dry shampoo! Add to freshly styled hair to enhance volume and texture. Before bed: Massage into hair before hitting the pillow for best absorption and wake up to hair that’s refreshed and ready to take on the day. Dry shampoo application tips: Customize + Control: Twist the top of the tube to control the amount of product dispensed! Start small with only 1-2 openings then play around with the right amount of dry shampoo for you! After applying, twist the top completely closed, click on the cap and toss in your bag for fresh hair on the go. Makeup Brush: If you want to keep fingertips clean and cocoa-free (the ingredient that makes our Dark Locks blend seamlessly with brunettes!), dust on dry shampoo with a makeup brush. The 2 Minute Beauty Hack You Need To Know About

2 minutes to softer, brighter and more vibrant skin? Done. Today, we’re diving into a traditional detoxification ritual, simple skincare tool, and 2-minute beauty hack you need to know about. You’re probably familiar (and have already fallen in love!) with the benefits of dry brushing for your body… but how about for your face? Yup, this is the 2-minute beauty hack that is going. to. change. your. skin: facial dry brushing. Simply put, facial dry brushing offers double the benefits for detoxifying + brightening the skin. This ancient beauty ritual sloughs off dead skin cell buildup on the surface and detoxifies skin tissues below the surface to reveal more radiant skin – in minutes. In this post, I’m going to unpack the transformative results you’ll experience from a consistent facial dry brushing ritual – but first, let’s take it back a few centuries… This beauty and wellness ritual has been practiced for centuries in cultures all across the world! From the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Chinese, Japanese and even in Scandinavia, dry brushing has found its home among so many different places + people and has been a vital part of supporting health all over the planet. But dry brushing’s rich history is deeply rooted in India’s most ancient holistic healing system, Ayurveda. Known as Garshana, this traditional detoxification ritual is practiced to support the removal of stagnant waste (also known as ama) from the body to promote optimal vitality and longevity. A beauty ritual that’s stood the test of time? Here’s why. Gently Exfoliate + Brighten Skin You know that phrase, “too much of a good thing isn’t a good thing”? That couldn’t be more true when it comes to exfoliation. Exfoliation is often an aspect of skincare that can cause more harm than good. The majority of mainstream treatments and products available are actually contributing to inflammation and skin damage by burning, scraping or scrubbing the skin (aka wounding the skin). Excess exfoliating, forceful scrubbing and abrasive ingredients set the skin on high alert as it thinks it’s being injured – and then hyper-reacts causing imbalances, inflammation, acne and premature aging. The opposite of what we’re going for. The last thing we want to do is harm the skin or break it down. So our approach to exfoliation is to work with the skin and to focus on strengthening the skin and minimizing inflammation so it can function as the self-healing, glowing organ it was designed to be. That’s why facial dry brushing (in my Holistic Esthetician opinion!) is the only exfoliation product you need. It eliminates the need for harsh exfoliating treatments and the potential of damaging your skin’s delicate barrier – while still giving your skin the gentle exfoliation it needs to glow. A daily facial dry brushing ritual helps to: Buff away buildup, blackheads and milia Gently nudge along cell turnover to decrease discoloration and brighten your complexion Refine skin texture to receive topical products more readily and effectively Skin Tip: This facial tool is the only thing that’s ever helped minimize the appearance of milia around my eyes and forehead. You can’t extract these little white bumps of buildup (and please, don’t even try!) and typically can only be removed by a dermatologist. But within days of facial dry brushing, mine completely disappear – no derm appointment needed. Light strokes with super soft bristles gently, yet effectively, slough off dead skin cells on the surface while still supporting your skin’s microbiome, moisture barrier and natural functions. Not only are you refining skin texture and revealing a brighter, clearer complexion, but you’re simultaneously detoxifying the skin tissue below the surface, too. Activate Lymphatic Drainage + Circulation Think of facial dry brushing as a 2-minute holistic skin treatment. The gentle bristles combined with a light brushing technique clears out stagnation, breaks up buildup and opens pathways for optimal flow of lymphatic fluid to cleanse skin tissue and create a healthier complexion, inside and out. Why is a healthy lymphatic system so crucial for clear skin? Here’s a little anatomy 101. The lymphatic system is the body’s natural cleansing and filtering system and is responsible for removing waste + harmful substances, recycling nutrients back into the bloodstream, sustaining healthy cells + immunity and maintaining homeostasis within the body. So clearly, it has a big job to do. 😉 But the thing about the lymphatic system is that it doesn’t have an internal pump to get these processes going (whereas the circulatory system has the heart which is continually pumping) – so it requires external support to get things flowing. That’s where facial dry brushing comes in! Just like a sedentary, stagnant lifestyle can lead to serious health issues, it works the same way for the skin. When the flow of lymphatic fluid is blocked and becomes stagnant, it slows down all of those functions and the health of cells seriously declines – leading to signs of aging, dullness, discoloration, sagging skin, sensitivities and inflammation. Again, the opposite of what we’re going for. Our lymphatic and circulatory systems are intricately connected so by boosting lymphatic flow, you’re also supporting circulation at the same time – increasing blood flow, oxygen and much-needed nutrients to the skin tissue. Think of facial dry brushing like feeding the skin, but from within. By optimizing lymphatic drainage and circulation, here are a just a few shifts you’ll start to see in your skin: Reduce puffiness (especially around the eye area) Brighten dullness Clear up congestion, blackheads and breakouts Support skin sensitivities and strengthen skin barrier Keep skin youthful, vibrant and balanced It’s through movement and flow that the skin is fed, detoxified and nourished. So grab your facial dry brush to wake up your lymphatic system and welcome glowing skin in minutes! So, to sum up all of the visible benefits from this 2-minute beauty hack, here’s what you can expect to see with a consistent facial dry brushing ritual: Detoxifying Minimizing blackheads and breakouts (and stubborn milia) Depuffing Softening the look of fine lines + wrinkles Brightening skin tone Decreasing discoloration from acne scarring + sun damage Improving the overall health of the skin The list goes on 😉 And while the benefits continue to build over time (with a foundation of a healthy lifestyle like getting beauty sleep, sunlight, hydration and exercise, of course!), you’ll notice an immediate shift in your complexion. Sold yet? We hope so. 😉 Here’s how to do it. The Best Way To Facial Dry Brush First things first, for the sake of your skin, please do NOT use the same dry brush for your face and body! Dry brushes for the body are typically crafted with more firm bristles (such as boar bristles), which the thicker skin on your arms and legs can handle – but your delicate facial skin might freak out if it felt those types of bristles. That’s why we now offer two different dry brushes – one with super soft, sustainably sourced goat hair bristles for delicate facial skin and the other with more firm boar bristles for the body. The different brush sizes have also been specifically crafted to support smaller areas of the face + neck and larger areas on the body like the arms + legs. (For best results from head to toe, incorporate both dry brushes for face and body into your beauty ritual!) Now that you know the best dry brush to use, let’s dive in! Facial dry brushing is new to our skincare lineup (although at Primally Pure we’ve personally been fans of this ritual for years!) – so here are a few tips to remember before facial dry brushing: 1. Always use light strokes with gentle pressure. The point is not to scrub off your skin – it’s simply to gently slough off buildup and boost lymphatic flow (which only requires a little bit of pressure to get fluid moving). 2. Incorporate facial dry brushing once daily on dry skin (don’t use with water or product). Sensitive Skin Tip: For inflamed, sensitive or extremely dry skin conditions such as active acne, rosacea or eczema, rather than incorporating this ritual daily, try facial dry brushing just 1-2 times a week. Use extremely light pressure and focus on the skin around the affected areas to help to dissipate heat and open pathways of healing. Whether you’re a morning person or a night owl, add facial dry brushing into the skincare ritual that works best for you! AM: After splashing your skin with water (or a gentle cleanse with our Baby Bar) and patting skin dry, brush first thing in the morning to depuff + brighten skin, then follow with toner, serum and beauty cream. (BTW, this is my favorite time to facial dry brush!) PM: After cleansing, dry brush to exfoliate and boost the absorption of your nighttime skincare products, then follow with toner, serum and beauty cream. Too easy, right? We told you. 😉 Here’s how to do it, step-by-step. Using light, gentle pressure follow this flow for best results: Starting on the neck, brush downwards to open lymphatic pathways and optimize drainage. Work your way up the face moving from the midline out towards your hairline. Focus on areas where you feel more congestion, puffiness or buildup. For example: sweep out and under the eyes to depuff + brighten directly over fine lines to soften their appearance down the nose to minimize blackheads around active inflammation to stimulate healing Sweep down from forehead to collarbone for a final drain. Finish with upward strokes from the neck up the face for a final boost of blood flow, oxygen and vital nutrients. While skincare trends and topical products evolve with the times (and your ever-changing skin state), facial dry brushing is one ancient beauty ritual you can always count on to create healthy, balanced skin, in minutes, no matter what. 4 Simple Tips To Support Your Lymphatic System (And Create Clear Skin)

We can’t stress enough how essential lymphatic drainage is for a clear, healthy, balanced complexion. The lymphatic system is the body’s natural cleansing + filtering system and is responsible for removing waste + harmful substances, recycling nutrients back into the bloodstream, sustaining healthy cells + immunity and maintaining homeostasis within the body. But when this system is blocked or when lymph fluid becomes stagnant, it causes toxic buildup in tissues – which can lead to not only acne, congestion and other inflammatory skin conditions but also illness and disease within the body. Clearly, the lymphatic flow has a bit part to play in our overall health and how our skin looks and feels. But the thing about the lymphatic system is that it doesn’t have an internal pump to get these processes going (where as the circulatory system has the heart which is continually pumping) – so it requires an external force to get things flowing. Here’s how to support and optimize your lymphatic system in 4 simple steps (they’re so easy you could literally do them all this morning!). #1. MOVEMENT Just like a sedentary, stagnant lifestyle can lead to serious health issues (have you ever heard how sitting is considered the new smoking?), it works the same way for the skin. When the flow of lymphatic fluid is blocked and becomes stagnant, it slows down all of those processes and the health of cells seriously declines – leading to signs of aging, dullness, discoloration, sagging skin, sensitivities, and inflammation. It’s through movement and flow that the skin is fed, detoxified and nourished. Moving your body inevitably gets circulation going which also enhances the flow of lymphatic fluid. Get a morning yoga flow in, go for a hike, hit the gym, or just stretch for 10 minutes after getting out of bed. #2. DRY BRUSHING We talk about dry brushing ALL the time on our blog. Why? Because it really is such a powerful way to support not only skin health (check out all of its beauty benefits here!), but your well-being below the surface. While skin is our largest organ, it’s also the last to receive nutrients from the body, so dry brushing provides a much-needed boost of blood + lymphatic flow to keep skin nourished, clear and radiant. Increased flow = serious skin glow. We typically suggest dry brushing before showering (and after moving your body from tip #1 above, you’re probably going to want to shower anyway!) so this is the perfect time to incorporate another way to love on your lymphatic system. Watch our dry brushing tutorial to make sure you’re getting the most benefit from your dry brushing! #3. COLD SHOWER After moving your body and dry brushing, it’s time to hit the shower – and I promise, this lymph tip isn’t actually as terrible as it sounds. 🙂 You don’t have to keep the temp cold the entire time, try oscillating between warm and cold water to boost blood and lymphatic flow – or after enjoying the warmth of your shower, finish with about a minute of cold water to really wake up your systems and support your wellness within. This daily practice can help to powerfully improve immunity, metabolism and your mind + body connection. The trick is to focus on slow, deep breaths even when the water temperature drops, this helps to support stress levels and allows you to actually enjoy the fresh flow of water – and lymphatic fluid! #4. FACIAL TOOLS Whether you took a shower at night or first thing in the morning, I suggest moving into your topical skincare routine to replenish your skin: toner, skin-specific serum and/or beauty cream and finishing with your favorite facial tool. Facial tools are one of my favorite ways to optimize the lymphatic system (and create visibly glowing skin) by clearing out stagnant, blocked flow and buildup to support proper detoxification + drainage to promote healthy, strong tissue and to naturally rejuvenate the skin. Check out my favorite facial tools here and tips on how to use them! Before you’ve even started your day you’ve loved on your lymphatic system in 4 super simple steps! And when you incorporate these tips into your daily and weekly routine, you can effectively treat and transform the skin (and your mind and body!) by supporting the systems below the surface.

My 4 Favorite Facial Tools

We talk about topical products a lot on Pure Life (I mean, it makes sense since we handcraft non-toxic skincare!) but today I’m unpacking another approach to caring for your skin and creating a glowing complexion – but this time, from just below the surface. Of course, topical skincare is key and a consistent routine makes a world of difference in your skin’s overall health, but beyond the proper cleansing oil and perfect skin-specific serum, facial tools have become a MUST for me – in my personal self-care practice and in my spa treatments as a Holistic Esthetician. Facial tools use simple, powerful techniques that focus on optimizing the body’s systems beneath the skin (especially our life-giving circulatory system + detoxifying lymphatic system) while also helping to inevitably improve the skin’s external appearance – in. so. many. ways. Lately, it seems like facial tools have taken social media by storm and by now, you’ve most likely got one or two (or more, if you’re like me!) facial tools in your beauty routine. But today I’m sharing my 4 favorite facial tools that I can’t live without – and suggest you don’t either. 😉 GUA SHA If this is a foreign word to you, I’m SO excited to introduce you to this ancient healing technique + transformative facial tool. Gua Sha has been getting a lot of hype in the beauty world recently – some say it’s even better than botox! This smooth gemstone tool + light pulling technique visibly transforms the skin. With the stone’s intentional design for smoothing, contouring, clearing, depuffing and plumping, its effects are experienced almost immediately and continue to build over time. The before + after pics are proof! I’m slightly (okay, completely) obsessed – and so are my facial guests. Gua Sha works with the skin to support and optimize the body’s own reparative functions by promoting lymphatic drainage, calming the nervous system, relieving muscle tension and tightness (a dream for TMJ), clearing blockages + buildup of toxins and excess fluid, and increasing the flow of oxygen and vital nutrients to the skin. Gua Sha is a game-changer for healthy, glowing skin. Tool Tips: Morning – Doing Gua Sha after your morning skincare routine helps to visibly diminish puffiness (especially around the tired eye area!), create a seriously healthy glow and give skin a more firm, lifted look for the day ahead. Evening – This is when I personally incorporate my Gua Sha practice because it’s the perfect way to unwind after a long day, melt away stress + muscle tension, and sedate the sympathetic nervous (fight/flight) system for a solid night’s sleep. Shop our pure jade Gua Sha stones here! JADE ROLLER Jade rollers have quickly become one of the trendiest facial tools around – especially in the world of Instagram and beauty vloggers. This tool is a bit more simple than Gua Sha, but still provides similar benefits for your skin health. These precious gemstone rollers boost the natural glow of the skin by encouraging circulation, calming inflammation and brightening the complexion. Since I’m still training myself to become a morning person, I’d rather sacrifice part of my skincare routine than skip out on sleep (coming from me, that’s crazy, I know!) but since jade rolling doesn’t require tons of time or expertise, this is my morning facial tool go-to. After applying my Plumping Serum or Beauty Cream, using a jade roller helps to enhance product absorption, provide a natural plumping effect, and tighten + tone tired skin. A few light strokes starting at the neck and working your way up the face seriously detoxifies the skin tissues, depuffs the undereye eye area and makes you feel ready to face the day ahead. My jade roller has a permanent place in my skincare routine – and refrigerator! Tool Tips: Ridges – Look for a roller with ridges to wake up skin by stimulating even more circulation + collagen production. Fridge – Keep your tool in the fridge or freezer to decrease puffiness, tighten skin and refresh your complexion. Shop our Green Jade, Rose Quartz and Yellow Nephrite Ridged Facial Rollers here! DRY BRUSHING We tout the benefits of dry brushing all of the time, but now we’re taking it to a new level – ever thought of dry brushing for your face? The beauty benefits of body vs. facial dry brushing are both incredibly powerful, however, the main difference between the two is the tool itself. The skin all over your body is thicker and can tolerate tougher bristles, but for your face, it’s extremely important to be sure you’re using the proper brush (i.e. gentle bristles specifically designed for delicate facial skin!). Facial dry brushing works twofold: exfoliating + softening the texture of the skin to create a smoother, more clarified appearance and, at the same time, detoxifying and cleansing the skin below the surface by stimulating the lymphatic system. Light, short strokes with this must-have tool sweep away dead, dull skin cell buildup on the surface while also sweeping away excess fluid + buildup and flushing out waste from within. You know those clogged pores you just can’t get rid of or bumps + blemishes that appear just below the surface of the skin that seem to linger forever? I’ve experienced them too – and facial dry brushing completely came to my rescue. Tool Tips: Swap out scrubs – Swap out potentially harsh, harmful facial scrubs for dry brushing instead! Gentle bristles provide the perfect amount of exfoliation without damaging delicate facial skin. After cleansing – While you want to dry body brush before showering, for the face, I suggest using this facial tool after cleansing. Think of your typical skincare routine: cleanse, exfoliate, tone, hydrate. Starting with a fresh, clean complexion, this tool becomes the only exfoliant you’ll need. I’ve been using and loving this dry facial brush for over a year and love it! FINGERS Surprisingly, in our hyper-connected, social media-saturated world, I feel like true connection and human touch is something we’re becoming more and more deprived of – which is why my #1 favorite facial tool of all time is simply: our fingers. Nothing compares to the healing power of touch and your hands make the perfect tool to support your skin and overall sense of well-being. Even if you haven’t tried all of the facial tools above quite yet, you’ve still got everything you need to support healthy skin on a deep, cellular level. Facial massage helps to strengthen facial muscles (repeated massage movements help to naturally lift + tighten), promote lymphatic flow (stagnant lymph can cause dullness, acne + puffiness), and melt away stress (which is one of the biggest contributors to inflammation in the skin). This skin-to-skin contact also allows your fingers to actually feel skin texture, temperature and areas of tension – something that can be more difficult to discover using a stone or a brush. Your personal touch helps to determine your skin’s needs and, even more importantly, helps to heal them. Sometimes it’s the simple things in life that have the most profound impact – and our fingers are no exception. Tool Tips: Cleansing oil – Combine the deep cleansing properties and the power of touch with the Oil Cleansing Method! The facial massage component is one of the reasons I’m completely sold on this cleansing technique. Proper time and place – While touching your skin when applying your skincare is essential and extremely beneficial, throughout the day do your best to avoid touching your face to help reduce bacteria, buildup and breakouts. 😉 Try alternating all of these tools in your skincare routine! I typically do my Gua Sha practice before bed to promote relaxed muscles + restful sleep, I’ll often finish my morning regimen with my jade roller fresh from the fridge, and then some mornings I’ll switch it up and do facial dry brushing first thing. Let your skin and well-being be your guide to choose the best facial tool for you in that moment. Leave any comments or questions below, enjoy! XO **Stay tuned for our upcoming facial tool tutorials! 6 Tips For Glowing Skin

We all want radiant, glowing skin. But if your post-holiday + mid-winter skin is anything like mine, it’s seen better days. Between the extra sweets and glasses of wine by the fireplace, dry winter air, added stress of the holidays, travel, etc., my skin is in desperate need of a pick-me-up! In an effort to nurse my complexion back to health, I’ve compiled a list of a few tips sure to bring life to dull + tired skin. If starting with all of these at once sounds intimidating, try adding in one or two at a time. Creating (and sticking to) a new healthy habit will naturally start a snowball effect where more healthy habits are created and the not-so-healthy ones are left behind. HOW TO GET GLOWING SKIN Tip #1: Get plenty of beauty rest. As a new-ish mom, this one has been nearly impossible for me. But if you don’t have an adorable little human monopolizing your nighttime hours, I highly recommend making sleep a priority. Getting a full night’s rest (7-9 hours) helps to restore the skin’s moisture balance, stimulate collagen, and (this is a big one) fight inflammation. Tip #2: Improve your circulation. When blood flow is boosted, much needed nourishment is sent to skin cells, reestablishing a radiant complexion and minimizing the effects of inflammation. Exercise is key when it comes to getting your blood pumping! And oscillating between hot and cold water (the colder the better) a few times while in the shower does the trick as well. Cypress essential oil (found in our Fancy Face Serum) is also known to increase blood flow to skin cells, making skin look more lively + healthy. Tip #3: Take up dry brushing. When done regularly, dry brushing is known to stimulate the lymphatic system (allowing the body to rid itself of toxic build-up), exfoliate the skin, remove dead skin cells + stimulate the growth of new ones and enhance blood circulation. It can also reduce the appearance of cellulite over time! Dry brushing is an easy habit to adopt and takes about 2 minutes per day. To start, gently stroke your body with the dry brush before showering. Begin with your extremities and gently move towards the heart in upward, circular strokes. Dry brushes can be found in our Spa Kit. Tip #4: Eat leafy greens (lots of them). Leafy green veggies (spinach, kale, etc.) help to support the body’s detoxification processes, flushing out excess hormones that can cause imbalances in the skin. Aim for 2-3 cups/day of leafy greens (the equivalent of a smoothie and a salad). Tip #5: Catch some rays. Getting adequate amounts of sunlight (for your skin type) is a vital piece of achieving an optimal level of health. One of the most important benefits it offers is Vitamin D — necessary for thousands of reactions within the body. In addition to the added health benefits of sunlight, it also provides the complexion with a beautiful sunkissed glow that can’t be replicated (no matter how much bronzer you apply). During the winter months when the weather is cool and sunlight is sparse, try getting outside for even a quick 10-20 minutes whenever possible — you don’t need much! Tip #6: Upgrade your skincare routine. Many of the skincare products lining the shelves at your local grocery or drug store are made with cheap, toxic ingredients. And although they may provide you with short-term results, they aren’t doing the long-term health of your skin any favors. On the flipside, skincare products made with real + organic ingredients help to improve the overall health of the skin, making it more resilient to signs of aging and inflammation. Some of our favorites for glowing skin include Cleansing Oil (a different type of “face wash” based on the age-old method of using beneficial oils to remove dirt and grime from pores), Fancy Face Serum (blend of 17 organic carrier + essential oils known to improve fine lines, acne and age spots) and Complexion Mist (a hydrating + refreshing mist that can be used throughout the day for an instant pick-me-up). Most importantly, remember that beauty radiates from the inside out. And (cheesy as it may sound) no matter how many things you do to improve your skin’s health and outer appearance, nothing will make your complexion glow more than a joyful spirit! This year, focus on doing things that bring you joy — cultivate happiness on the inside and it will show on the outside.

From Our Founder: A New Take On The New Year (Plus Her Top 5 Posts For Fresh Inspiration)

How was your year? Are you feeling organized, clear-headed and ready to take on 2024? Or are you feeling like your biggest accomplishment of late is remembering to brush your teeth in the morning and getting yourself and/or your kids fed and dressed in a reasonable amount of time? 2023 has been a lot of the latter for me. In years past, I’ve usually taken time before the new year to take inventory of the previous year and brainstorm/visualize new habits to put in place - not the case this time! A lot of 2023 for me has been allowing myself to embrace the season of life that I’m in. In addition to owning a business, I’m also a wife and a mother to three kids (including a rambunctious 15-month-old boy)...and we’ve been living in a tent due to a mold issue or traveling for the better part of the year.  Needless to say, life has felt a bit chaotic lately. And my introverted personality has really missed having regular moments of solitude and silence to collect my thoughts and assess, dream and plan.  BUT, I’ve also found so much joy in serving my family and imperfectly allowing myself to simply “be” during this full season of life. My own dreams and desires for myself and my company will still be there waiting for me in 2024, but my day-to-day family life will look a whole lot different than it does today. My baby boy won’t need me as much a year from now, my middle daughter will be officially done with her toddler/preschool days and starting kindergarten, and my oldest will be an independent third grader.  So no matter what this year has looked like for you, I hope you can enjoy where you’re at. If you’re in a place to create and carry out a comprehensive plan to improve your health, career, or something else - awesome! I would encourage you to take full advantage of that space/freedom and run with it!  But if not, I pray that you’ll be able to give yourself grace and find joy in embracing your current season of life - whatever that may look like.  XO, Bethany P.S. How To Transition Your Skincare For Healthy Winter Skin

Baby, it’s cold outside! As you swap your sundresses and denim cut-offs for chunky knits and turtlenecks, your winter skincare routine should follow suit. Because as the weather changes, our wardrobe isn’t the only thing that needs to adapt, our skin does too. As temperatures drop this time of year, so do our moisture levels – leading to a complexion that’s dull, dehydrated and more susceptible to sensitivities. That means it’s time to take stock of your current skincare routine and make some adjustments depending on what your skin is saying. From the blistering cold outdoors to blasting heat indoors, fluctuating temps can really take a toll on your skin. But flaky, dry, weather-beaten skin doesn’t have to be inevitable – a few simple tweaks is all it takes! To keep skin glowing and hydrated, keep reading. Here are a few tips to help transition your skincare routine for healthy winter skin, all season long. START HERE: CLEANSING Start here for healthy winter skin! Rebuilding hydration + preserving the skin’s natural moisture barrier starts with the first step of your skincare routine: cleansing. So this season, swap stripping soaps + conventional cleansers for a Cleansing Oil properly formulated for your skin state to balance the skin, leaving it purified and properly hydrated. Cleanse nightly with nourishing oils to deeply cleanse and wash away the day (even holiday makeup and buildup) – without over-drying the skin. To find out exactly how to do it, watch this tutorial! Cleansing Oil Tip: Make sure to use warm water – not hot! Although scalding, steamy water might be tempting during the cold, winter months, it can actually cause skin to become even more dry and depleted. Warm water is all you need to soften skin, purify pores and feel ahhhh-mazing all winter long. WEEKLY WINTER STEAM Add even more elements of warmth to your routine and upgrade your winter wellness + skincare ritual with a weekly aromatherapy steam facial. This is such a therapeutic way to boost beauty and immunity during the winter months. Not only does the warmth of the steam help to purify pores and give your skin a healthy glow, organic essential oils of eucalyptus, peppermint + spearmint help to clear skin (and sinuses), relieve congestion and provide powerful aromatherapy benefits for your skin and mood. Here’s how to create a steam facial at home: Bring a pot of pure water to a boil and while the water is warming up, take a few minutes to oil cleanse your skin (see winter tip above!). Transfer boiling water to a large bowl and add a couple spoonfuls of Sea Soak. Find a comfortable place where you can sit with your face over the steam. Drape a towel over your head to hold in the heat and deeply relax. If at any point the steam feels too hot, be sure to pull your face back a bit. Take several deep breaths and allow the aromas + warmth to do its healing work. After about 10-15 minutes, follow the steps below to complete your winter skincare routine and seal in moisture. LIGHTLY EXFOLIATE (KEYWORD: LIGHTLY) To combat dry, dull winter skin, mask more often! Without proper exfoliation, you may just be applying moisturizer on top of dead skin cells, which doesn’t allow for nutrients to actually hydrate and heal. But steer clear of harsh ingredients + aggressive exfoliation techniques that actually strip and irritate winter skin even more. Stick with natural clays, raw honey and botanical oils that are rich in minerals, vitamins, enzymes and humectants to gently slough off dead skin cells, refine skin texture and optimize hydration – and even help to boost the absorption/benefits of your serum + moisturizers! These are a few of our go-to masking ingredients to nourish winter skin: Raw honey: this superfood is a natural humectant and infuses hydration into the skin. Hibiscus: a natural source of AHA’s (alpha-hydroxy acids) and antioxidants to stimulate cell turnover and support moisture levels. Bakuchiol: this natural retinol alternative accelerates cell renewal and improves skin texture. Marshmallow root: works in the same way as hyaluronic acid to deeply hydrate + heal. Mask Tip: Set aside time in your evening ritual to mask and relax! Try applying a light layer of raw honey mixed with hibiscus powder + pink clay or try this nourishing facial mask a few times a week. Then finish with your full winter skincare routine to replenish even more moisture as you sleep. LAYER, LAYER, LAYER This is the secret to a successful winter skincare routine: layering. Cold weather calls for layering, and not just for your OOTD (aka Outfit Of The Day – it’s okay, I had to look that up too 😉 ). Specific products in your skincare routine actually work better together and help to build on the benefits of one another. After your oil cleansing ritual, follow these steps below to layer your products to enhance their effectiveness and finally say “see ya later” to flaky, dry, weather-beaten skin. LAYER COMPLEXION MIST + SERUM: The best way to boost the absorption (and the benefits!) of your serum is by spritzing a hydrosol beforehand. A simple spritz of Complexion Mist after cleansing and before applying your moisturizer allows hydration to soak even more deeply into the skin and provides much needed dry skin relief. LAYER SERUM + BEAUTY CREAM: Think of your skin-specific serum like your favorite chunky sweater: a seasonal staple. Infuse life into thirsty skin that’s dull + dehydrated on the daily. But sometimes, when it gets really cold outside, a sweater just isn’t going to cut it – that’s where your coat comes in: aka beauty cream. (Thanks for bearing with me during this wardrobe analogy! 😉 ) After applying your skin-specific serum, seal it all in with a Beauty Cream to deeply moisturize and nourish the skin. For super-sensitive or weather-beaten skin, try the Baby Balm which is rich in marshmallow root (aka nature’s hyaluronic acid) to attract moisture and protect the skin’s delicate barrier.  LAYER BEAUTY CREAM + COMPLEXION MIST: For added hydration, spritz Complexion Mist after applying Beauty Cream to lock in moisture as the last layer in your winter skincare routine! Skin Tip: For our acne-prone friends, we encourage you to swap aggressive topical acne products and layering lots of soothing oils + herbs to help calm redness and breakouts while still strengthening the skin’s delicate barrier. Trust us, come Spring, your skin will thank us. 😉 LITTLE DETAILS Don’t forget your eyes + lips! These little areas on the face shouldn’t be overlooked, especially this season. Eyes: This fragile skin is the first place to reveal dehydration, sleep deprivation (hello, dark circles) + signs of aging, so it’s essential to include a vitamin-rich cream in your winter skincare routine. Even if you feel too exhausted at the end of the day to cleanse your skin and apply eye cream, staying consistent with your skincare will keep your complexion radiant and clear – no concealer needed. Lips: Chapped lips don’t have to come with the colder months! Apply lip balm before bed and wake up to soft, buttery (and plump!) lips, even in the dead of winter. Lip Tip: Not only do you want to keep this winter skin secret weapon on your nightstand, but keep one in your purse (and pocket and car) for hydration on the go. Swipe on your lips, dab under your eyes and nourish cracked cuticles, all with one little tube. WINTERTIME TOOLS Roll your way to more hydrated skin this season. Support skin health and hydration from below the surface by adding in a facial tool as the last step in your winter skincare routine! A Ridged Facial Roller or Gua Sha Stone (or both!) powerfully support the skin’s natural functions by activating the flow of lymphatic fluid, circulation and vital nutrients – plus these tools enhance the absorption of your moisturizers so you can get your glow on all winter long. Tool Tip: If you kept your Ridged Roller or Gua Sha Stone in the fridge for the summer, try keeping it in your bathroom instead as a reminder to roll every day and to boost blood flow + warmth during the cold winter months. BONUS TIP: BODY To help dry, flaky skin from head to toe, it’s time to pick up the practice of dry brushing. Natural bristles combined with short, light strokes (learn how to dry brush here!) help to gently exfoliate and slough off dry, scaly skin to reveal smoother, softer skin – no harsh or abrasive exfoliants needed. A daily dry brushing ritual helps to visibly improve skin texture and prep skin to better absorb moisture. A win-win for winter skin! Be sure to dry brush before showering (remember, warm water not hot!) and afterward, massage in a luxurious body oil while skin is still damp to drench your body with much-needed moisture. We hope these tips help you create a seamless transition to a winter skincare routine – and a healthy, hydrated complexion! XO
