Connections

The Fives are equipped with built-in Bluetooth for convenience, but you'll find plenty of wired connections on the back of the primary speaker, too. There's an optical input and a Type B USB input for connecting a computer. High-res digital sources benefit from 24-bit/192kHz decoding for exceptional depth and detail. A stereo RCA input is provided, along with a switchable phono preamp for making a direct connection to a turntable. A handy 3.5mm input lets you plug in your mobile device.

And if you want a little more bass — of course you want a little more bass — theres a mono RCA output for connecting an optional powered subwoofer.

Features

Built-In Amplification: The Klipsch Fives incorporate individual ultra-low noise amplifiers that are custom designed to maximize system performance and eliminate the need for external amplification. Klipsch engineers picked and tuned the components to be an absolute perfect match throughout, making the system sound incredibly immersive and complete. The Fives are also bi-amped resulting in improved clarity and output. The result is dynamic, room-filling sound. The Klipsch Fives has a total system power of 160 watts (80 watts per speaker). Each tweeter receives 20 watts, while each woofer receives 60 watts.

Note: The amplifiers are built-in to the "Right" speaker. A proprietary speaker cable is included to connect the "Right" speaker to the "Left" speaker.

Two-Way Driver Design: The Klipsch Fives features a two-way driver design with each speaker housing a a 1" titanium LTS vented tweeter mated to Tracitrix Horn, plus a 4.5" long-throw fiber composite woofer. Klipsch's Tractrix Horn tweeter design in combination with a high-excursion woofer delivers stunningly precise acoustics and enhanced bass performance.

  • Titanium LTS Vented Tweeter: The titanium tweeter diaphragm's light weight yet rigid composition exceeds the performance of aluminum, polymer or silk tweeters. A vented tweeter design reduces standing waves behind the tweeter diaphragm for a smoother high frequency reproduction. Klipsch award-winning Linear Travel Suspension technology leverages a piston motion of the titanium diaphragm that lowers distortion and delivers real-to-life sound. A ceramic magnet housing provides premium performance,
  • Tractrix Horn Technology: The square Tractrix Horn delivers a 90° (w) x 90° (h) dispersion pattern for a broader sound-stage. Klipsch exclusive Tractrix horn technology ensures that the speaker's high frequency energy is aimed at the listener and reduces artificial reverb or filtering caused by indirect sound bouncing off of walls. Using this proprietary focused technology provides clarity, dynamics, and detail for your movies and music
  • High-Excursion Fiber Composite Woofer: The 4.5" long-throw fiber composite cone woofers deliver accurate midrange and midbass frequencies, and surprisingly deep bass.

Hand-Crafted Cabinet with Tractrix Port: The Klipsch Fives feature a beautiful hand-crafted wood cabinet with a real walnut veneer or matte black painted finish, and come with acoustically transparent grilles that attach magnetically. Each speaker utilizes a rear-firing Tractrix port that is perfectly matched to the real-wood cabinet and woofer to create ideal airflow with minimal distortion and turbulence even at the lowest frequencies. Klipsch Tractrix ports have custom designed inner flares that help reduce air turbulence entering the port; less turbulent air helps reduce port noise for more cleaner powerful bass.

Dynamic Bass EQ: Dynamic Bass EQ applies loudness correction to automatically adjust low frequency levels as volume changes. As the human ear perceives frequencies differently with variations in output, the Fives will dynamically match the ear's ability to hear lower frequencies. Typically, only available with audio/video receivers, dynamic volume is a first for Klipsch powered monitors. What you get is powerful bass whether the listening volume is low, cranked up or somewhere in between.

24-Bit/192kHz DAC: The Klipsch Fives utilize a 24-bit/192 kHz DAC (digital-to-analog converter) for flawless reproduction of HDMI, optical digital, Bluetooth, and USB high-resolution audio tracks.

Bluetooth Audio Streaming: The Klipsch Fives are equipped with built-in Bluetooth 5.0 with support for Bluetooth audio streaming (A2DP) and control (AVRCP). You are able to wirelessly stream stored music, music apps, and other audio content from your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, tablet, computer, or laptop to the Fives. You'll also be able to control basic playback functions from the included remote.

  • aptX-HD Compatible: In addition to Bluetooth's standard SBC code and Apple's AAC codec, the Fives offers support for aptX-HD. aptX HD is an enhanced codec that supports 24-bit audio over Bluetooth and has been engineered to improve the signal-to-noise ratio, resulting in lower background noise. With the ability to support streams up to 24bit/48kHz, you're able to wirelessly stream from an aptX HD compatible device to the Fives without sacrificing sound quality and listen to "better-than-CD" quality audio.
  • Multi-Pairing with Auto Re-Connect: The Fives can be paired with multiple Bluetooth source devices, but only one can be connected and used for playback at a time. Once paired, the Fives will automatically re-connect with your device when in wireless range (up to 33').
  • Playback Control: Supported playback functions include Volume, Play, and Skip. Advanced playback control and song/artist information will still be done from your Bluetooth device.

Note:

  • Your smartphone, tablet, computer, or laptop must also support aptX-HD in order to enjoy the benefits of Bluetooth aptX-HD.
  • The Fives do not support Bluetooth hands-free communication (HFP) for making and answering phone calls.

USB-B Input: The "Right" speaker of the Klipsch Fives features a rear-panel USB (type-B) input for connecting your Windows PC or Mac computer/laptop. Through the Fives' USB connection, you are able to play music files (up to 24-bit/192kHz) stored on your Windows PC or Mac computer/laptop through the powered speaker system.

HDMI-ARC: Thanks to the HDMI-ARC jack on the "Right" speaker, you can connect the Klipsch Fives directly to your TV for high-resolution (up to 24-bit/192kHz), discrete 2-channel PCM sound. Your TV must also be equipped with an HDMI-ARC jack.

Notes:

  • A standard HDMI input will not transfer the TV audio signal to the Fives. Your TV must have a HDMI ARC input with the HDMI CEC function turned on.
  • The HDMI-ARC jack does not support Dolby Digital, DTS, and other mutlichannel surround formats. Your TV will need to be set to PCM.

Optical Digital Input: The Klipsch Fives is fitted with an optical (toslink) digital input on the back of the "Right" speaker for connection to a digital audio device like your TV, Blu-ray, or CD player. The speaker's optical digital input will accept 2ch stereo PCM only (up to 24-bit/96kHz).

Note: The optical digital input does not support Dolby Digital, DTS, and other mutlichannel surround formats.

Dual Analog Inputs w/ Phono Switch: The Klipsch Fives is equipped with two analog audio inputs on back of the "Right" speaker; there is one stereo minijack (3.5mm) input for connecting a portable audio device with a headphone jack and one stereo RCA input for connecting an analog audio component. The stereo RCA input has a Phono switch which allows you to connect a turntable, so you can enjoy your vinyl record collection.

Sub Out: The Klipsch Fives features a mono-sub RCA output on the back of the "Right" speaker that allows you to connect a powered subwoofer for added bass response. Your powered sub should have its own low-pass crossover.

Controls: The Klipsch Fives offers top-panel controls, includes an IR remote, supports HDMI-CEC, and compatible with the Klipsch Connect App.

  • Top-Panel Rotary Dials: There are two rotary dials on top of the cabinet of the "Right" speaker that control Volume and Source.
  • IR Remote Control: The included IR remote provides wireless operation of the powered speaker system, plus control of your Bluetooth paired devices. The remote offers easy access to system features such as dedicated source selection, volume up/down, play/pause, and previous/next track. Make sure to point the IR remote at the IR sensor on the "Right" speaker.
  • HDMI-CEC Support: Thanks to HDMI-CEC, when you have the Fives connected to your TV via HDMI ARC, you are able to use your TV's remote to operate volume level of the powered speaker system.
  • Klipsch Connect App: The Klipsch Connect app (for Apple iOS 12.4+ & Android OS 7.0+) lets you control certain functions of the Fives from your compatible smartphone or tablet. Your compatible Apple iOS or Android OS device will need to be connected wirelessly to the Fives via Bluetooth. The Klipsch Connect app provides control functions, such as source selection and volume control.

Mounting Options: The Klipsch Fives can be placed on a speaker stand, bookshelf, table, or other flat surface. The Fives feature a cork pad on the bottom of the cabinets to secure the speakers in place and prevent any damage to your mounting surface.

Note: There is no included bracket, keyhole slot, or threaded insert to wall-mount the speaker.

AC Power: The Klipsch Fives' "Right" speaker which is equipped with the built-in amplifier must be plugged into an AC power outlet using the included 68" detachable AC power cord.

What is a good speaker stand to use for the Klipsch The Fives?

I use Kanto speaker stands for ALL my speakers, and find them to be a good value. Just do a search for "Kanto speaker stands" here on Crutchfield, and pick the stand that works best for you in terms of height.

I just set mine on the floor. These speakers are the best. I gave a brand new denon sound bar away and got these instead, best move I ever made

I have the Kanto SP32s and they work great for the R-51PMs so I'm sure they would do great for the Fives. I have a set of Fives as well but they are not on stands. I think they would work though. https://www.crutchfield.com/shopsearch/kanto_sp32.html

David- I am sorry that I am unable to help. I found some cube/shelving that was on sale at my favorite furniture store in my hometown that is perfect for storing vinyl as well as Cd's and I am able to place these relatively diminutive speakers, the turntable, and future CD player on top. These can fit on shelving so well I never pictured a speaker stand. Good luck. I certainly have benefited by speaking with these fine Crutchfield folks and I recommend continuing to reach out to them . Regarding the fives I am certainly happy with them . A nice full sound without an over abundance of bass.

Can you plug these into a home theater receiver?

A
They can operate as powered wireless rear surround sound speakers if your AVR has Bluetooth option. Hope this helps.
raymond  Feb 20, 2022
A
Well - these have their own amplification - so they are not really meant to be used as you would a passive speaker hooked up to a receiver/amp. I use mine hooked up to my PC via USB and I have another pair hooked up to my TV via HDMI. No receiver required.
scott  Jan 10, 2021
A
You may be able to, but I'm not sure why you would spend money on premium speakers that are powered when if your receiver provides amplification you can get it high quality speakers for cheaper
julian b  Jan 10, 2021
A
No, you cannot. These active speakers have no way to bypass the amp in the speakers to make them passive. So you'd be plugging an amp into another amp. However if you aren't looking for surround sound these are an awesome 2 channel set up that can be plugged directly into your tv via ARC HDMI which allows you to control the speaker volume with your tv remote and power the speakers on and off. You can also add a subwoofer, although I don't think it's necessary as The Fives have PLENTY of low end.

Sacs - dacs
wayde  Jan 10, 2021
A
Yes. But not as speakers. They will take rca inputs, usb and coax/tos. So in other words you would not be using your receiver as an amp, but as a preamp. These speakers have their own amp and sacs built in.

Q
What is the typical configuration when using Apple TV? Do I need to have an HDMI out for audio? Or can I simply connect the speakers to the Apple TV device via bluetooth? What's preferred?
scott  Jan 02, 2022

Your Apple TV is connected to your TV via HDMI and your tv should have have an HDMI arc/earc port and that's where you would connect your speakers. https://www.crutchfield.com/learn/what-you-need-to-know-about-hdmi-arc-and-earc.html
james  Jan 02, 2022

Good afternoon Scott, that's a great question!! I wasn't sure if connecting an Apple TV to the fives was even possible so I just tried it. Sure enough it works. That said, I noticed that my max volume level using Bluetooth was marginal. It could be a simple setting on the ATV though. In my opinion however, it is much easier to connect your ATV to your television using an HDMI cable, then connecting your television to the fives using an HDMI ARC port from the television to the fives if your television has one. That will allow you to control speaker volume with your ATV or television remote. If your television does not have an HDMI ARC port, an optical cable from the television to the fives also works great. All three options will work, I'm just not sure how Bluetooth would work with day to day use, as in having to pair the ATV to the fives each time you turn them on, etc etc. Hope this helps, good luck!!
samuel i  Jan 02, 2022
A
Plug the HDMI from the active speaker (the one with all of the ports) into the ARC HDMI port on the TV. Then all other devices plugged into the other HDMI ports of the TV (including the Apple TV device) will play through your Klipsch speakers. You could also connect the speakers to the TV using an optical cable if there is no ARC port on the TV. You should never use Bluetooth for any audio connection as it compresses the signal to a maximum of 320 kbps and thus eliminates all advantages of lossless audio. Bluetooth was designed for phone calls (8 kbps). That being said, most TV shows and streamed shows are encoded using Dolby Digital, which maxes out at 640 kbps, usually much less. For reference, a CD plays at 1,411 kbps.

Q
Can I use The Fives for TV through HDMI -AND- stream music with my Bluesound Node 2i? What input would you use for the Node?
randy  Nov 13, 2021
2 answers
A
Hey Randy, good question! Yes you can connect your TV using HDMI and a Node 2i for music streaming to the fives. As for which source to use, it will depend on how you choose to connect the node. I am using the RCA inputs on my speakers for a vinyl player, so I have my node connected using a toslink digital cable, then selecting optical output for the source on the speakers. If you don't use a vinyl player and would rather connect your node to the speakers with RCA cables, just make sure the toggle switch on the back of the speakers is set to 'line' input rather than 'phono' input. You would still select the phono for your source. Hope this helps!!
samuel i  Nov 13, 2021
A
Yes for hdmi with tv, that is mainly what they are designed for. For the node 2i, you could use an optical cable. This will use the DAC in the fives, which is very good (decodes pcm up to 24/192). If you want to use the DAC within the node 2i, you could connect an AUX cable between the node and the fives. Simply switch the Fives input source between "TV"(hdmi), "optical", and "AUX" as you wish.

Can you add a second set of speakers?
david  Oct 20, 2021

No. These speakers are meant to be used only as a pair. The only other speaker you can add to this is a subwoofer.
ronald  Nov 02, 2021

edward  Oct 22, 2021
A
Short answer is no. Longer answer is that you may be thinking about this product slightly backwards. They are an amplified speaker, however they do not have a source and the amplifier is only for the speakers. There are no hook ups. There is a sub-out however that's likely not what you're asking.

I checked the input/output panel on back of the main speaker. I don't think they will power a second set of speakers.

Q
I plan on using these to play lossless apple music via my Iphone. Is there a direct connection to the Iphone aside from bluetooth? (I believe Bluetooth does not support hi-res audio). The USB connection appears to be for computers - not sure if I can use an adapter to connect to the Iphone? Thanks!
damon  Oct 09, 2021
3 answers
A
Yes! You will need an adapter called the "Apple Lightning to USB Camera Adapter". Don't worry that it's called a "camera" adapter, it works great for connecting to audio equipment as well. You will also need a USB cable with male USB-A connectors on both ends....this is the most common type of USB cable, so no worries. Connect the "Apple Lightning to USB Camera Adapter" to your iPhone (or iPad), then connect the USB cable from the adapter to the USB input on the back of the speaker. Make sure you select the proper input on the speaker control, and that's all there is to it. The USB connector on the back of the speaker connects directly to a digital/audio converter (DAC) that can be used by computers, smart phones, and tablet computers. This will allow you to get the most out of your Apple lossless music files.

I use something like this to connect my iPhone to my Denon receiver: [Apple MFi Certified] Lightning to RCA Cable for iPhone IPA-d, 2-Male Y Splitter Aux Audio Cord Compatible with iPhone 12 Pro/11/11 Pro/XS/X/8/7/6 Adapter for Car, Amplifiers, Home Theater, Speaker
john  Oct 10, 2021

Good question Damon. I am not sure about apple lossless, but I play a lot of MQA music from Tidal through a Blusound Node 2i network player hooked up directly to the Fives with high quality RCA cables and the music sounds great. For clarification, I do stream wirelessly from my phone to the Bluesound Node. I can definitely tell the difference between that and other music services even at their highest settings. I am almost positive any external DAC hooked up to the speakers that supports high res audio will work. If price is a consideration, Audioquest has their Dragonfly line of DACs that support high res audio and can be connected directly from your phone to the speakers auxiliary input using a lightning to USB adapter and auxiliary cable. You can find plenty of YouTube videos on this if needed. I hope this helps out some!!

Q
What are the key differences between the Fives and the Klipsch Reference R-51PMs?
reid c.  Oct 08, 2021
2 answers
A
I have only had the fives but in reading the specs the main difference is that the fives are mainly designed to be paired with a TV since they offer HDMI with ARC. It works great as an all in one solution, and the built in DAC decides up to 24/192 pcm. I do not see DAC specs on the reference speakers. The specs say the fives can produce lower frequencies, but the woofer on the reference speakers is bigger (5.25 in VS 4.5 in). I would bet both sets of speakers are really nice but I can definitely highly recommend the fives. In theory you could even plug in an iPhone using a USB B to A cable and the camera adapter and you could have lossless audio up to 24/192 with these outside or anywhere where you have access to a single electrical outlet.

Q
If I use these speakers for music but place them in separate rooms will the sound quality still be good?
emma  Apr 07, 2021
4 answers
A
The speakers cannot be separated in different rooms. The right (powered) speaker supplies sound to the left (passive) speaker with the included 17' 4 pin speaker cable.Think of this cable as the A/C power cord for the left speaker's ability to produce sound. They must be within 17 feet of each other to work. Hope this helps.
stephen  Apr 07, 2021
A
I believe the sound would be "incomplete" for all stereo recordings given the separation of instruments or vocals that occurs. I would consult with the Crutchfield folks on which speakers would fit your need.
ernest  Apr 07, 2021
A
You would be better off using a Sonos wireless speaker. The Fives are high end stereo speakers with a 12ft cable that connect them.
steve  Apr 07, 2021
A
They are stereo speakers and hence meant to be used in the same room. One is the left channel and one is the right channel.

Q
I plan to connect these to a TV. Can the volume be adjusted with the TV remote?
clarence j  Feb 26, 2021
4 answers
A
The answer regarding HDMI - ARC is spot on, but just to elaborate you can pretty much connect from any source and still control the volume with your remote. It depends on the remote and how much it can control. I chose to get a Logitech Harmony remote which allows you to set up and control thousands of devices. I am able to control the volume of The Fives no matter what input you use. Most modern TV's come with a Universal remote which can learn or be taught new devices, so it is highly likely that even without a custom remote that your TV will be able to add/learn about The Fives and control its major functions.

Yes, I have Fire TV remote, the remote also controls speaker volume
patrick r  Feb 26, 2021

Absolutely as this is a unique feature of these speakers. All you need to do is to use an HDMI connection to the ARC port. TV remote will now control the volume and you'll be in listening heaven - enjoy! Ps- add the wireless sub to complete the experience.

I didn't actually measure it to be exact, but from the bundled cable it looks like 9ft.

A
Yes. I have mine paired with Klipsch SPL-150 along with the klipsch wireless transmitter module so I don't need to run a cable from the fives to the sub.

Yes. In the pic, it appears to have a (LFE) sub output.

Yes in fact these are great with a sub as they recognize when a sub is hooked up and roll off the frequencies to the woofer which removes a significant load from the amps in these speakers.
