You just started your first job at a new company and are eager to share all your brilliant ideas with the team. You go into your first meeting feeling energized, expecting your manager and peers to listen attentively to your suggestions — and then implement them, pronto. But to your dismay, nothing you share ends up landing. This continues to happen week after week.
What to Do When Your Ideas Aren’t Landing
Are you communicating in a way that resonates with your audience?

Summary.
What should you do when your ideas just aren’t landing with your team? Here are four strategies you can use to present your ideas in a way that will resonate with any audience.
- Think small. Whether you’re talking a manager, a peer, or a senior leader — these people have a lot on their plates. It will be easier for them to process what you’re saying if it’s clear, to the point, and focused on a single solution or concept.
- Share in 10 minutes or less. It’s safe to assume that your audience’s bandwidth is limited. Cut down your presentation into one big headline and two or three supporting points.
- Do more than point out the problem. It’s important to deliver difficult news or alert your manager to a big concern — but don’t just point out the issue. Suggest a solution as well.
- Remember that it’s not about you. Ask yourself: How can I package my thoughts in a way that will resonate with my audience? How do they like things presented? Good communication is about considering the other person.
