Spray this and TV over holy smokes it smells like a minty hot chocolate it’s so good.

I recently acquired a sealed bottle of the private blend from 2018. I already had the signature line and couldn’t pass the opportunity to own the PB too.

I will start by saying there is a marginal difference between the two. The PB is a little stronger and longer lasting. Both have that amazing lavender and herbal quality upon the opening. You get a blast of patchouli but the is stronger in the signature line. The PB has a touch more of the amber in the base which props up the lavender.

I get around 9/10 hours of longevity, projection is around an arms length, this scent will leave a trail which is intoxicating. Very masculine, perfect for all weathers. One of my favourite fragrances of all time.

I got a dupe of this 10/10 fragrance. It’s amazing. One of the best masculine perfumes, but still possible for a feminine woman to wear. It’s a universally pleasing woody, smoky scent. Would be a perfect home scent too. You can’t go wrong with this.

uhohstinky

Just a great barbershop fougere that checks all the boxes!

#108 in my "Tour de Fragrance"
Someone was under the impression this was discontinued and I had no trouble buying it. It is absolutely one of the best Tom Ford has to offer and one of the best aromatic fougeres I've encountered .And if you like this, and any man should, Zino Davidoff duplicates this scent veery closely and is a potent EDT. If Zino were available in EDP I'd say save your money, but it isn't. Woody, mossy, great projection and longevity. Utterly masculine and classy. Worth the $150 to me.

Papu88

Ii have a 3.4 oz bottle for sale. Used maybe 4-5 times

Love, love LOVE this scent! Omg, why on earth was it ever discontinued? I just received a small bottle from scent split yesterday and it wore on me so beautifully for HOURS! honestly, I think that if I hadn't showered before bed, I probably would have still smelled it on myself the following morning *haha* Its such a classic sexy fragrance -- I sprayed it on myself and told my partner I smelled like a barbershop in PNW forest *haha*. I just bought a bottle of the 2020 edition and I really truly hope it smells at least close to this perfect original. I'm pretty sure my partner and I will be sharing this one.

I have a full flacon of this and it's almost done. I have not decanted any of this. Should speak towards how I feel about this.

If we could resurrect the Greek gods and have them create a fragrance for a gentleman in his suit and tie in the 21st century, it would resemble this.

On a more serious note, I actually like the signature version quite a bit too. Minor differences, but the main being that one wears a bit airier/fresher. This one lasts longer on me than the new release hence my points go here.

lefterisparasyris

Initially, this is a lavender bomb. The opening spray is like a levander invading your skin. Then it becomes sweeter but not gourmand sweet. More like a sophisticated, luxurious rich sweetness that comes from the geranium, the amber and the patchuli. Levander never leaves though. At times, it almost feels like you're smelling a very high quality turkish delight or something like that. Very big sillage and longevity. So big that I personally couldn't handle it. I can almost imagine a 60+ well groomed old man with a suit wearing it which is not my vibe. If you're going for a fougere classic then this could be the one. It's confident, it's big, it's old style but not necessarily outdated. It's artfully composed but defenitely not an easy wear.

Elindio

R.diggity

Absolutely heartbroken. One of my favorite openings of any barber shop style fragrance, then, at about the hour mark, it sours on me. No lotion, no strong soaps, and at night in my a.c. Definitely will try again.

Bought Al Haramain Portfolio Imperial Oud…which (on me) has a very similar malt liquor, gin and tonic type feel, but dirtier (good) and less refined in the opening.

Whateverwhocares

Spicy, earthy and aromatic. A minty twist on a traditional, herbal “old man’s scent.” Lavender heavy. Just missing neroli lol. Very well blended; a lot of notes working harmoniously. I’m a little put off by the projection, it’s too aromatic. A quality gift, but I wouldn’t buy this for myself.

featherweightsss

Lavender, patchouli, and a ferny / minty opening that gives shaving cream or men’s soap vibes. Very realistic notes and the sillage is STRONG with just one spritz. By the 6-hour mark, the fresh herbal tones had died out, leaving a thick amber that was heavy, borderline smothering. Harkens back to classic mens cologne from the early 80s - high quality, potent, mature…and a bit too much.

beardedrainbow

Let me preface this by saying though i have several dozen fragrances, i'm not gifted at discerning the notes throughout development. I am a daily straight razor shaver, so you might say i love barbershop fragrances. I have and love Rive Gauche - and this definitely has similarities. This fragrance has a certain feel to it though, that i find in scents like Antaeus, New York Intense, and believe it or not - Eau Sauvage parfum. There is a complexity and depth to these that BDJ also has. There is classiness and old school feel and it's an almost narcotic. This narcotic effect i find in BDJ is very similar to Eau Sauvage Parfum. I think there are major differences for sure but as a whole it has a similar feel as Eau Sauvage parfum - my bottle is 2016. Combined with body heat, this stuff does become intoxicating and it lasts forever. Another lavender worth checking out is Nicolai Amber Oud. It's insanely good. It's mostly lavender.

tecfield

This is too aromatic for my taste. When I sprayed it for the first time, I really liked it instantly and still like it but it goes and goes and goes for hours and becomes too much. If it had a bolder amber or wam spices, it might have been easier to deal with it for me but it's very aromatic, green, kid of medicinal and bitter sour that makes it unenjoyable when it goes for half a day. Again I really like the smell but don't want to continuously smelling it for a good half a day. And I definitely don't get the comparison to Zino. I don't have an older bottle of that but the new one smells really synthetic and not like this at all. Layering this with Jubilation XXV makes it a lot more enjoyable for me.

Scottishscentguy

Already left a review but just wanted to leave another with regards to longevity. I've always thought it was around 8 hours until I got compliment 2 days in row at 12 and 14 hours later. Also noticed that when your body heats up it really becomes noticable again like it has literally just been sprayed. Same happens when you go in the shower.

paulskez

I have 20ml left of a 100ml bottle, private blend, but missing the gold front plaque. It’s very strong, slightly ‘denser’ and longer lasting than the signature release. I’m in the UK and happy to send this to the first person to DM me, free of charge, as a gift……

EDIT: For some reason I can’t delete this but it has already gone.

Beau de Jour, Private Blend
(November 2019 batch)

Aspect I do like about Beau de Jour is Modern take on Barbershop Fougere style.
When I wear this scent, It doesn't feel age but I feel sophisticate and well put together.

The scent development is not really drastic.
It starts with fresh Lavender providing uplifting feel.
Then, it starts develop herbal accord, dry down to clean patchouli.
I don't notice the amber, but I do notice mild powdery veil the same way when we do barber.

This is semi-sweet from Geranium. Nothing extraordinary.

However, please beaware that this is after all a fresh-aromatic scent in Barbershop genre.
which may require a bit professional situation to wear, I will feel a bit out of place if I try wear this Casually.

I do wear when meet important people occasionally it makes myself feel groom and put together.
But if you still young and do not like fragrance that still on older side, this might not fit your bill.

I will keep this along Fougere Paltine as professional fragrance Day / Night.

Longevity : 7-8 hours
Projection : Strong in first 3 hours, never skin scent.

I have a 3.4 oz brand new sealed box if someone wants it

Scottishscentguy

One of the best barbershop scents out there and for me far an away the best lavender scent. Almost sniff the skin off my arm when I wear this shit. It is indeed denser and longer lasting than the signature. I thought I got about 8 or 9 hours out of this until someone said I smelt great after 13 hours. Have a 100ml Bottle and a 250ml decanter.

Arwash

Amouage bracken man minus the clove and extra mint
Amazing green fougere scent with fantastic performance. Yes it has a little throwback feeling but it's very wearable

How does the private blend Beau de Jour compare to the newer version in the signature line?

IamdrinkingBeer

Top, top, top-notch fougere. Has a modern feel to it, yet it remembers and gives homage the yesteryear, where we had more pure masculine scents. Lavender, mint and oakmoss done to perfection. There is a little amber at the end. Need i say anything more? Go out and test this if you're even a little bit serious about fragrances.

And of course, if you are sick to your stomach from all the new designers, this is something you can wear all year round.

BatemansFragrances

Okay this is indeed different than the signature version. Well the signature is different i mean. About 10-15% different.

Signature is greener, more metallic, dry and heavier on patchouli. This private blend is more aromatic and foamy/creamy. More musky too, not so patchouli heavy in the base like the signature. Interesting when the formula code is the same for both...guess it says a lot about the ingredient sourcing Tom Ford does for their private blends.

Both have their place. Also private blend seems to project more. My mother who never complains about Beau de jour, immediately said her lips are swelling up and she's getting allergies when i applied two sprays of the private blend on myself in a different room.

Just ordered a bottle. Expect a comparison soon!

Beau de Jour Private Blend by Tom Ford reminds me of a classic men's barbershop. It's almost like American Crew hair pomade—fresh, sharp, polished, herbal and clean.

It's absolutely a ubiquitous scent and can be worn at all times of day across all seasons. Personally, the scent is too classic for my 28-year-old self, but I have much respect for the quality of this blend. When I gift a bottle to my father, he will be thrilled!

alikisagun

Waaay stronger than the signature one. Love this.

DPerfumes

This is such a joy to wear and reminds me of being in a barber shop. Green and lavender come to mind.

VelvetPiston69

Released in 2019 and we see everywhere that this private blend will be discontinued.
I just hope Beau de Jour will not be discontinued.
Because if you love ferns, spicy green and other minty scents, try it.
He represents a perfectly groomed gentleman.
Described as classic, lively and unconventional, Beau de Jour combines classic accords of aromatic fern such as lavender, moss and amber.
At the opening i detect a little side of Azzaro Pour Homme...
The continuation is composed of lavender, rosemary, geranium, mint, oakmoss, basil, patchouli and amber.
This perfume reminds me of a journey through time, scents of the past...
The style of Beau de Jour is both classic and old school...
It smells like a light shaving foam from an old barber.
It's soft, it smells clean, kinda the fresh shaven...
A pretty amazing thing about this scent, it doesn't really come only after 30mins, when the base and middle notes begin, when it melts and warms up on the skin.
Good advice, get it now before it's reformulated.
It is a very masculine scent of high class and incredibly sexy.
You feel sure of yourself, like in a luxury suit.
I find it almost impossible not to love it...
It's a very modern take on barber/fern scents, and you'll find something oddly addicting about it.
At the opening it is a real explosion of herbs, which then transforms into something softer, to then reabsorb into a very nice, soft and subtle perfume which provides an odor and an atmosphere of barber shops of yesteryear... With a slight minty touch.
This is what prompted me to buy this Beau de Jour !!
To be honest, if you're under 30/35, move on to something else.
Because with such a solid base of main accords, it is above all intended for men with a certain experience and olfactory maturity.
I would say that 3/4 sprays are enough to last all day, because in my case i noticed a hold between 8 and 10 hours.
As for the sillage and longevity, needless to say that they are powerful and exceptional !!
Conclusion: A perfume with very high quality ingredients, refined, balancing the classic fern notes of yesteryear with those of today.
It will undoubtedly remind you of your childhood and the times when you went to have your hair cut at the local barber shop, all in this typical atmosphere and its so special smells...
My rating: 9/10

Applied two half sprays behind each ear last night around 22:00 and now it's 11:53 and I can still smell the bubble around me. When I applied it, I almost could taste in the back of my throat, but after 20 minutes it calmed down to this purple and hazy spiciness and a slightly sweet, chocolaty textured patchouli.

Probably one of the best scents Tom Ford put on the market and he discontinued it, only to release it back in the signature line, watered down and with no depth. You might think I'm exaggerating or bullshitting here, but you have to put your nose on this and you'll understand the difference.

heylegros

I managed to get my hands on a decant of Beau de Jour by Tom Ford (the Private Blend version), and I was very curious to smell it, seeing how popular the newer version of it was, and given how much I usually enjoy lavender in perfumes.

Well, the notes pyramid does not lie as far as lavender is concerned: you get an initial blast of lavender, which feels quite rich, but not particularly sharp. Hints of mint lend it an immediate barbershop-type of scent feel of freshness, without actually making the scent feel minty. The geranium note also chimes in almost immediately, and it takes only a very short time before the patchouli base note starts rounding up the whole scent with a palpable woody accord, upon which the oakmoss note builds up to become quite prominent. This is a very mossy scent, at least to my nose.

Unfortunately, I did not pick up much basil and rosemary. They're lost somewhere as low key supporting notes to more prominent ones that shine in the accords responsible for the fresh, barbershop-type feel of the scent. I suspect that the strength of the oakmoss note may be overwhelming those notes, and I personally would have preferred a more herbal aromatic scent à la Milano Cento, which is my favorite old school, barbershop type of fragrance thus far.

In the drydown, the mossy aspect of Beau de Jour tones down a notch, with an amber and patchouli backbone that carries all these other initial notes that are now also toned down at varying levels, with lavender still somewhat standing out and rounding up the scent into a quite slick shaving foam type of scent. Unlike Milano Cento, it does not feel soapy, as again the herbal, aromatic notes are nowhere to be picked up (which is unfortunate, in my humble opinion).

Performance is good with 5-6 hours of pretty strong projection.

Beau de Jour is still a good fragrance without a doubt. It is nothing groundbreaking, as anyone familiar with aromatic fougères would expect. Nevertheless, it is an interesting take on that formula, with a clear homage to lavender in the opening, and obvious mossy and woody spins. I do not want to be annoying by constantly mentioning Milano Cento EDP (I also did that in my review of Creed Viking), but I feel like it's a cruelly overlooked barbershop type of frag/ fougère, and I truly believe that a lot of folks looking to add one of those scents to their collection should at least be aware of it, as it's not nearly as popular as Beau de Jour or Viking, but it surpasses both as far as I am concerned.

In a few words: Very mossy take on the fougère formula, with an initial blast of lavender and with a well-rounded, woody dry down.
Pros: Nice freshness in the opening that cleverly balances the initial lavender blast. Very well-rounded dry down that balances lavender and woody notes beautifully.
Cons: Herbal, aromatic notes of basil and rosemary are cruelly underused and nowhere to be picked up. The mossy aspect of the scent takes too much space for other notes to shine through.
Overall rating (out of five stars): ★★★

jellisunc

My dad wears Drakkar Noir, this doesn't remind me too much of it. This is a classic aromatic fougere with a modernized finish throughout.

Heavy on the lavender and quite powdery on my skin in the initial blast. Opens being quite herbal and floral then it dries down to be a earthier thanks to the oakmoss.

This is definitely one reserved for an older gentleman (55+), but I still think younger people can wear it.

Tom Ford almost always nails it and he does that here. Not sure this one is for me, but I respect it and believe it is very well blended.

koolthing

"Excuse me Mr. Ford, I'm sorry to disturb you, but there is a call from the lawyer of a Mr. Drakkar Noir holding for you on line #1."

Uni-Scent

One of the best barbershop scents I've smelled so far. This fragrance smells very heavily of herbs, woods, and patchouli; pure masculine goodness. Performance is pretty good and it definitely screams springtime. I haven't tried the clear bottled version, but something tells me that the private blend might just be a little more richer in the aroma. Old school inspired which is what I like about the scent. One or two sprays is needed when wearing during the warmer months due to its boldness.

Scent: 9 / 10
Projection: 8.5 / 10
Longevity: 8.5 / 10

maxpowerboston

I own both the PB version and the new version. This scent opens with lavender backed by spices and geranium. It's super well-blended and is undoubtedly barbershop but doesn't scream old man (although I'd say most guys under 25 might find this to be not to their taste). It's another classic work/office scent. I find the lavender fades a bit after an hour and you're left with a nice, solid woody/spicy/ambery backbone with a hint of lavender.

A comparison to the new version: on the open, I get more of a rich lavender from the PB bottle but, honestly, after an hour the two, side by side, are identical. I've smelled/owned hundred (probably a thousand+ in terms of smelled) and I cannot pick up a difference in dry down. Makes me wonder if they just used a less expensive lavender oil for the new bottle.

Longevity on the PB BdJ is strong at 8-10 hours on my skin with a few hours of strong sillage. Longevity is about the same on the new BdJ, too.

An 8.25/10 for me. Must buy if you can grab it on discount from the Estee Lauder shops.

Jonmichael02302

I picked up a 250ml of the original formulation while the getting was good & man I'm so glad I did. I don't care what anyone says, the original is far superior to my nose. It lasts longer, projects more & has more depth. Could be a direct result of maceration, who knows. All I do know is "I LOVE THIS JUICE!" Once again Tom Ford knocks it out of the park! I get the most incredible fresh, green, mossy forest vibe mixed with a little bit of dirt from the patchouli &/or amber. The lavender is the star player here but definitely anything but linear. As with most TF frags I've tried, this is master perfumery at its finest. The dry down is heavenly. Projection and sillage is above average, lasting throughout the better part of my day @10+ hours easy. Definitely a mature scent that leans masculine. Got to try this one if you haven't.

Wolfgang Mazrin

God I love Tom Ford!!! He is literally a genius and throws out masterpiece after masterpiece. Breathing this in, I get the feeling of fresh woods, earth and pine. Greenery erupting from the ground as the last grey touches of winter give way to a cold rainy spring morning. The delicate touch of lavender and tree moss float gently through the air.
On me this stuff lasts like a power blast. Four sprays and and I leave a trail lingering behind me for hours. It seems like every Tom Ford scent I really like; Italian Cypress, Noir Anthracite, Tobacco Oud and this beauty get discontinued. This scent gets a big fat love from me.

Bow collector

This is a must buy. Not the Re released version. The Private Blend. (discontinued) This fragrance will stand the test of time and become more popular as it ages. Clean:Crisp:Earthy:Deep:Fresh:Woody:Wonderful. So Lame how all of these Private Blends are being discontinued.

ooosmoov

Smelled TF Private Blend Beau De Jour immediately upon its release & immediately sprang for the 250ml. It's absolutely fantastic. Perhaps my favorite take on fougere, & definitely my all-time favorite Tom Ford release. The bold lavender, herbs & mint really do it for me. This instantly became my latest "signature" scent, & I loaded up upon it being discontinued.
TFPB BDJ = 10/10.

The TF Signature BDJ... Well, it's really good too, but it's not the Private Blend BDJ. It seems pretty dead-on at first... They replicated the opening remarkably well... However the mids & base notes just aren't there by comparison, so Signature BDJ is less bold with a shorter life. They also significantly amped up the mint to achieve this - So much so, that by the time I am getting anywhere near the same effect with TF Signature BDJ, I'm literally tasting mint, & the rest just doesn't stand up to it like it does in PB BDJ.
Still a great buy for the money, great gift & very respectable fragrance. I literally can't knock it, & if not for wearing 100ml of PB BDJ in 2019, I'd be giving this closer to a 9 or 10. It's awesome!
TFS BDJ = 8/10.

Don't sleep on Fougere D'Argent & Platine, either! Both are great!

Karamazov786

I just chanced upon a bottle of Private Blend Beau de Jour three weeks ago. What a revelation. It's the perfect fougere for me. At once modern and classic, masculine and refined. My only regret is that I also own the Signature one that I found disappointing after the 1 hour mark. It simply pales in comparison to the Private Blend. The Private Blend is rich, full-bodied, and maintains its quality throughout the life of the scent. The Signature Beau de Jour begins to unravel at about the 2 hour mark. Having worn it now for close to four months, there is something simply off about the Signature Beau de Jour. The cost-cutting measures seem evident in the cheaper one. It becomes quite synthetic and cloying and loses the magic that the Private Blend retains. As enough reviewers here can attest, Private Blend is the way to go if you enjoy this frag at all. Now that it can be had discounted, the Private Blend is also the better value given the higher quality of ingredients.

Dandyman

My absolute favorite fougere.
Worth the money.
Masculine 30+ age.
Longivety is minimum 8h.
Performance (sillage) is rocket fuel.
Lavender, barbershop, smooth and creamy.
Much better than signature (even though signature is great and if you don´t have the money for this one, then buy that one.)
You can still get this one on various websites and i think you should.

10/10

EDIT: It comes in a 250 ml bottle, without spray, so i have to decant. To the community out here; where can i buy the best decant bottles? I want them small, like 10 ml or so.

Salute1

It leaves me cold. Comparisons to Rive Gauche are unwarranted. Rice Gauche is far superior. The lavender here is beautiful and realistic, and the amber is pleasant, but the whole thing falls apart into a vague, old man-ish dusty patchouli too soon. I'll keep searching for the ultimate modern fougere.

I should add that my wife and seven year-old son remarked that I smelled like my grandmother when I had it on. She is an 89 year-old whose signature scent is CK Obsession, which she sprays very liberally! I don't know what the similarity is (maybe it's the amber?), but it's definitely there. As a fougere lover (vintage Azzaro Pour Homme is what I wear the most), this was not the vibe I'm going for.

juljan

i first acquired the new signature formulation and then a 50ml of the black bottle, because i was curious whether i could detect a difference. i did sniff test on each forearm.

while my untrained nose did not sense too great a difference at the time, i kept getting a softer/rounder feeling from the original. since i knew which arm was which, did i have some sort of prejudice?

however, yesterday, i spritzed some black bottle and really really found it compelling. this did not happen when i had worn the 100ml signature version. i like the signature, but it did not hit me the same way.

of course, weather, mood, etc, etc,(the host of variables) may have obscured that the formulations are just about the same. in any event, i found some back-up black bottles on ebay and am happy that i can safely use them without worrying too much of running out quickly. glad i stocked up on the black bottle.

all in all, this, for me, is day wear maybe business casual or a little more serious. it doesn't carry me away to exotic lands or dreamy reveries but is sobering and clear headed. with or without jacket and tie, it can go most places. of course, the signature being so close (if not the same) works as well.

GiannisP

When modern meets classic!! A modern gentleman's scent!

A masterpiece! I usually don't like fougeres at all but this is not just a fougere. It has this classic fougere dna that reminds an older guy's fragrance bus this is a modern take on this dna that has no age and someone younger could easily wear it.

This laventer is AMAZING, so natural smelling, fresh, sweet and alluring. We had a lot of lavender on our backyard and everytime i was passing by i was catching with my hands the laventer, this is the smell my hands had after but with pathcouli, some mint that makes it fresh and with some sweetness from the amber. It comes very masculine to me but a bold woman could wear this. It's very versatile, a signature scent, perfect for a casual or formal ocassion, any time of the year, day or night. Perfomance is very good, about 8+ hours longevity with very good and piercing projection. It's so unique that everyone notices you but i would suggest 1-2 sprays on summer because it can get cloying. In comparison with the signature's line beau de jour for me is the same, maybe the PB has one hour more longevity.

Overall, a masterpiece, the best fougere i've ever smelled! Now, thankfully, this is in the signature line and is more affordable. If you like fougeres give it a try and if you don't (like me) give it a try too.. :)

toto453

Similar to BDJ Signature, but less ambery and more herbaceous.

Longevity is maybe better on Private Blend.

NY Frag Snob 22

I went out and got the PB version of this after reading reviews that it was better than the signature version and well i do like this ALOT !!!!! But im not gonna lie it smells alot like drakkar noir to me for some reason it smells like it not exactly the same this is a more smooth upscale version of it in my opinion but this is my inital experience with it i just sprayed it on my wrists and back of my hand about 20-30 mins ago so im sure this will change quite a bit over the next few hours but i do like this stuff it is all man it is manly def a barbershop manly scent nothing unisex about it in my opinion it would be best suited for winter/fall it reminds me of a late fall night stepping outside and smelling the air and someone burning a certain type of wood in their fireplace but i cant think of the type of wood it is but it smells like that to me well a note in this smells like that at least all n all so far so good but will update later after a full days wear ...like i always day this is MY OPINION and the way it will smell on your skin or what you think may differ quite a bit because we are all diffrent amd have diffrent chemistry and what i think or another person or the next person think means nothing it matters what YOU think and how it meshes with YOU cuz ur chemistry is diffrent so get a decant sample or possible go to a store and spray it on yourself not a card because it will react differently on your skin than paper because ur skin is not made of paper or your clothes correct ???? Opinions are like as****** EVERYONE has one remember that

Very, very similar to Amouage Bracken man.

I have the old and the new versions and I’ve been trying them out individually and together. For me the newer one seems slightly fresher and lighter. The private blend version just seems to be denser and less fresh to me. The newer one’s freshness honestly reminds me a tiny bit of Grey Vetiver EDP, but in the dry down it’s all beau de jour. I can detect a small difference and I like that little extra density (it almost has a cozy feel) the older one has. Honestly though, the price difference is so much between the old and new that I’m sure most people won’t mind the tiny scent difference (if they can even detect it) and will be happy with the new one.

UPDATE (Feb 20, 2020):
The more I compare the PB version vs the signature, I find myself liking the PB version more. I'm finding I like the opening and mid of the Signature version less and less, the PB version more or less starts and ends the same, and I stick to my statement that the PB version is more dense and cozier than the Signature version. While the new version is good, personally I'm happy I have the PB version but the cost difference of the new version is something that should be taken into account and not ignored.

SocialAssassin

This is a smooth polished, minty, and modern Fougere. Elegant lavender, crushed herbs, mint, and mossy patchouli. The epitome of class, cleanliness, and virility. The new Signature formulation is flatter, not as dense, and a lot sweeter. The base is amped up with amber eventually ruining the scent profile with overdone sweetness. The PB version is perfectly balanced, more herbal, and third-dimensional -- it also lasts and projects a lot longer.

Jedai

Have to review this since it has just been demoted from Private Blend to the Signature line. I have a sample from one of the first batch of the PB.

The note pyramid is a bit different to me: it opens with fresh green notes of mint and basil. Then appears a mix of the the other notes except the lavender which takes more time to come to the front stage (at least 30 min). The dry down is more about oak moss and amber than patchouli to me, while still keeping a metallic lavender now in the back stage.

It's a modern aromatic fougere, very masculine, lasts all day. I'm happy it's been demoted so that the price reflects quality. Let's hope the juice stays the same.

Nathanthomas50

I have the original & tried the new version by putting one on each hand & got way lower performance from the new version - after a few hours it was pretty much gone Whereas the PB version was still going strong . The scent is superficially the same but seem a bit thinner & with less depth too. I guess if you reduce the price of a fragrance by half then you have to recoup those costs somewhere. If performance is a big requirement then try both versions before jumping into this version just because it’s cheaper.

jcravenw

Is there any difference between this and the one just announced (Jan 2020) that is in the clear bottle similar to Ombre Leather? The listed notes seem the same, the name IS the same... Is this just different packaging?

KJS88

A sensuous modern lavender and amber fougère that opens and dries down like a cross between Zino and Rive Gauche Pour Homme, but is ultimately an improvement on both. Tested on skin and on paper over 7 hours. Full bottle worthy for sure, but you have to like Zino and Rive Gauche to like this. Tends to err more on the size of Zino, with the guts of composition a more ambery Rive Gauche.

Tom Ford (Signature Line) Beau de Jour
[Apologies for listing it under the Private Blend version guys but the new version isn’t listed yet)!!]

I had a couple of sample vials of the newly introduced (Signature Line) Beau de Jour handed to me at the Tom Ford boutique in London last week and have been giving it a wear this weekend. I’d tried the Private Blend Beau de Jour a few years back and whilst it was clearly a quality composition, I didn’t really give it much notice because as a rule, I’m not a lover of the fougere/barbershop genre and don’t tend to gravitate to them in the way I do with ambers, vetivers, orientals etc.

This one...... I hate to admit...... has gotten me! It opens up quite green & slightly powdery but despite having the huge hit of lavender at the top-the one thing I’m not a fan of in huge doses, it manages to bring through the rosemary, geranium, oakmoss & basil almost immediately, making it significantly more wearable for me personally and it’s really very nice indeed. The base accord of amber paired with the patchouli is much more my comfort zone, making this composition a real surprise to me and actually, I can see me buying a bottle of this quite happily on the back of my testing, which in truth, has surprised me a lot. It is what I would regard as quite a “classic” men’s fragrance; not quite old-school and certainly has a contemporary green touch but it’s certainly grounded in traditional men’s perfumery.... but modern. It’s something I feel I can comfortably wear, whereas I couldn’t with something like Rive Gauche, Zino or Roja Scandal.

I reckon this will be fantastic in spring and the warmer autumn period for me. I will say though that in reference to the original Private Blend Beau de Jour, I don’t feel this newer version has the density of the original but logically, it simply can’t have: it’s half the price! Whilst it’s obviously been tweaked and tucked in regards of the component costs compared to the original, for me anyway, it’s a much more wearable fragrance that I look forward getting to know better!

Moderate longevity on me (6 hours) and decent projection for 1.5 hours before sitting close to the skin and whilst the sillage isn’t huge, it’s quite respectable for up to 6 hours & the odd waft after that but that being said, it’s a bit chilly at the moment, so I’d expect that to improve once the weather warms up. Fantastic presentation too...... same bottle shape as Ombré Leather & Metallique but clear, ribbed glass in the same vein as Grey Vetiver EDT: Class!!

kaurg

First impressions. A cross between Guerlain Jicky and Penhaligon's English Fern. Much more sober, virile and clean than Jicky, but has a similar powderiness and "dressed up" feeling. A bit more sensual than English Fern, but has a similar medicinal tinge (geranium, mint). In fact, I could imagine that layering these two would give an approximation of this fragrance (although not a fan of layering) -- 1 part Jicky and 2-3 parts English Fern.

Parallels farther down the line would be Azzaro Pour Homme and Penhaligon's Sartorial. It is definitely more rounded, lush and less pedestrian than Azzaro Pour Homme, but more crisp and, again, medicinal/hygienic than Penhaligon's Sartorial.

Long story short, a decent lavender-geranium fougère that gives you the barbershop associations. Good news about moving it to the signature line though, since, in the end, it is just a very well done conservative masculine fragrance that doesn't have too much expensive ingredients in it.

Ciders12

Obtained the new signature beau de jour today from uk debenhams online.15.01 2020. I can confirm
This smells exactly the same as the private blend .its beautiful . I can not detect any difference in the dry down like for like .enjoy

mszigetihu

@Boris_B: Yes, seems like it. It's already up on the website, although not available for order just yet. The bottle has changed, which is matching his regular line of fragrances.

Boris_B

Is Beau de Jour being transferred from the Private into the Signature line just like they did with Ombre Leather? I saw a post on the Instagram profile of Tom Ford.

Vitriol08

Update after getting the new version:
It is exactly the same scent and still an amazing one!

What a classy, strong, easy to wear scent!
It is one of these TD Private Collection that seems to directly connect with the nervous system pleasure center.
It is so smooth, pleasant and potent at the same time.
It is not a power fougere in the sense of brashness and out of this world explosion on the opening.
It does project and last very strongly though but in an almost effervescent fashion.
After a few hours wearing it, i can confirm that the longevity i strong!
It also greatly reminds me of Primas from Navitus but a bit detuned in terms of depth and complexity.

petros1963

Timeless, chic in the same category as the lavender extreme just more complicated!

FloidnScotch

Fantastic news for fougere lovers: as already mentioned, this is now available as part of the signature line (think Grey Vetiver bottle, Ombre leather shaped).Ordered mine already, looking forward to testing it.

I love fougeres myself and am really happy that Tom Ford has been targeting this category recently. Perfect timing also, now that Rive Gauche is gone.

The note pyramid is exactly the same as the Private Blend version so if no major differences in performance, this will get a lot of interest from those who like Rive Gauche and Zino or simply those looking for a clean, elegant, "sharp dressed" scent.

I see it as a 30+ scent, not so much for the younger crowds, who I think would be more interested in Grey Vetiver.

As is my experience with the PB line, longevity is great on my skin. This is not a linear fragrance (common criticism of PBs,) I really enjoy its progression from the fresh lavender opening to the warm patchouli and amber drydown, strengthened by the rosemary, basil and oakmoss in the heart. The mint is very subtle and adds freshness to the opening.

Some similarities to Patchouli Absolute in character, which I also own and love, with BdJ being lighter in the opening and warmer in the drydown. My partner loves both on me and wears Patchouli Absolu herself but considers BdJ too masculine-leaning.

Cioraniada

I think Tom Ford's inspiration for this scent came from the french '60s classic 'Belle de Jour' with Catherine Deneuve. A married woman that is quite bored with her marriage and husband and wants new experiences, so she ends up in a brothel.

Now, this being targeted towards gentlemen, I get a Richard Gere in 'American Gigolo' vibe. A well dressed man, well spoken and well groomed. A sophisticated playboy vibe.

I've bought it a month ago and honestly it's one of the best scents I've ever smelled. It's just perfect. I love it in a way because it reminds of my father and grandfather shaving in the morning when I was a little kid.

Image I get when I smell this: Purple sky when its not day or night, it's in-between; purple fields; luxury mansion; sophisticated playboy driving a Ferrari at sunset in Miami.

cpp214

I don't get the comparisons to Zino at all. Think Rive Gauche with added amber and a hint of mint. No amber or mint in Zino. This is an improvement on Rive Gauche in every way.
I rarely get compliments on fragrances but have had at least 4-5 on this one with one young lady and a guy friend both asking for the name and where they could buy it. Highly recommend this one. Performance is very good for me. Some days I think it's not projecting too far but then others can still smell it. I get wafts of it for at least 7-8 hours and can still smell it fairly strongly on clothing the next day.

5 star fragrance for me and I really hope the reviewer below is correct about this coming to the Signature Tom Ford line as it should be a bit lower in price for a 100ml bottle.

Diggi

I like the way it starts out it's balanced and ginger and lavender harmonize to create a clean interesting unisex smell.

However after the dry down it becomes pretty heavy on the floral. It becomes a sort of semi spicy floral which comes off more feminine to me, as a result it's not really my thing.

aurelianus

I bought this in London last weekend while Christmas shopping as a treat for myself.

It reminds me of my uncle growing up who used to wear an aftershave that I cannot remember now. Anyway this is fresh, classic, but modern too and that's just dandy in my book!

freddiefingers

I just tried this in the shops today and all I can say is that if you are not sure of what or how this smells like then look no further than what others have attested to here.

I have tried and owned both Rive Gauche and Zino and I can say definitively that this smells more like Zino than Rive Gauche.

Given its lack of uniqueness, I was not wowed at all and can count myself really lucky to have bought the body spray online today at a bargain price as at the time I had not tried it yet.

I will advise anyone not to blind buy until they have at least tried the other alternatives before taking the plunge.

Tazahr

Supreme Aromatic fougere and upper class gentlemen scent.

An upgrade from all aspects to YSL Rive Gouche.

Very sophisticated and high quality.

Fjb2210

Smelled this at Sephora. Basically it’s a 250$ Zino Davidoff that seems to last slightly longer. Incredible fragrance. But tough to say if it’s worth the hefty tag.

Heifrank

Beau de Jour is a great aromatic fouguere, a classic receip with a modern twist.

Many compare it with YSL Rive Gauche, the old batch. I have the new batch and comparing them side by side. TF is richer, darker and has a dominant patchouli. YSL is much lighter, almost bubbelgummy and more synthetic compared to TF. YSL is transparent, TF is dense. The old YSL was probably deeper and richer such as Beau de jour.

If YSL is the apprentice at the office, TF is the experienced boss of the company. YSL are great, its just a bit «younger» in style. They are both in the same category or working at the same company, but they are on different places in their career.

Bdj has great longevity, 12 hours and still going strong. Projection is also good, just at the level as you want it. Beastmode projection is never a good thing for me. With Bdj you will be noticed for sure, but in a pleasant way.

Its a very cozy, classy scent. It has traditional vibes, but never get old school and dated.

I hate fougere. But this is the only fragrance that made me appreciate fougere because it doesnt smell like grandpa. It is a modern fougere, even the drydown has a pleasant aromatic mint. You can smell the complexity and the quality and it is still pleasant. It smells very handsome, well put together, well groomed men, unlike other fougere (that smells someone stayed and slept inside the barbershop for a whole month). Definitely my next purchase. This is so beautiful, elegant, and classy.

M.Golightly

I tried this and for the price tag I would have to say NO only because I found a better fragrance. Similar cord and longevity and silage but better price tag -Fougere Nobile 1942 is better for me because of the tobacco cord.

talkaboutscents

I think this is my favorite from Tom Ford together with Fougere D'Argent. Beau de Jour is so sophisticated, a bit mature in the barbershop powerhouse genre but not at all dated IMO. It has modern touches especially towards the drydown. It opens up quite harsh and herbal (rosemary), lavender-patchouli-mint-geranium-oakmoss combo but quickly sits down into this very rich masculine scent. I was surprised to see the listed notes as when I think of them together. You get the best type of lavender which screams quality and the patchouli is blended to perfection, not the dirty kind but a very safe one. Of course, need to give credit to Davidoff - Zino here since this one is clearly a more refined and slightly cleaner version of it. Zino can be found below 20 euros for 125ml, so hard to justify. Etro - Magot is another one leaning more unisex that is very similar.

The drydown is the best part, and this just lasts and lasts with very acceptable projection.

I love this fragrance. I have layered it separately with Tobacco Vanille and Tuscan Leather with beautiful results. It has great longevity on its own, but with either of these lasts forever. This, for me, is the best Tom Ford for a while. Not for young, bubblegum loving sweet fragrance lovers, think sophisticated, debonair, confident and mature.

Oh, how can anyone think it smells anything like Zino - for me a quite awful scent.

dylan1760

Such a beautiful scent. This was the first Tom Ford I paid close to retail for. The performance is great , the scent is uplifting and it’s very versatile.

mmcdonald36

Do not purchase now, it is coming to the signature line at a lower price and the new bottles have even been leaked. DM me for the pictures if you’re interested

pəˈCHo͞olē

Still for sale on UK website and in Belgravia. Chap in shop stated that he had no knowledge of this fragrance being discontinued. I hope he is right, and many others below are wrong, or I will have to shell out for a 250ml bottle of this elixir....

Oh in terms of characters, I definitely get Don Draper, but not Jimmy Conway. Cary Grant in the Talk of the Town and Sean Connery in Dr No spring to mind for me.

FawSoul

I've read somewhere that the private blend will be discontinued. A guy from another site emailed the TF costumer service and this was their reply: "I am sorry to inform you that the Beau de Jour is being phased out, once the stock level has been depleted it will be discontinued." :(

mmcdonald36

According to an SA at the Tom Ford store in Atlanta, this fragrance is being transferred to the signature series 😎

mrushrush

This is magic. I'm in love with this fragrance.two sprays and it will last hours and project few.
It reminds me when my father used to shave every morning while I prepare to school. This is the kind of fragrance who reminds you your family.

Martin.91

To me it smells Very simillar to Fougére D´argent but Beau de Jour has a better projection and longetivity.

mmcdonald36

They’re idiots if they permanently discontinue this scent and keep stuff like Fougere Platine, Oud Minerale, and Oud Wood Intense around, which i’m sure all sell much worse and are way more abrasive and polarizing. I’m thinking this “discontinuation” isn’t the last time we will see this scent, whether it continues on with a gendered name like Beau de Jour or not.

Mr. Chris

Discontinued? I sincerely hope this gets re-introduced in the signature line. Like what they did with Ombré Leather!

beavisbonce

A worthy investment 3 morning sprays and at midnight still going strong. I feel squeaky clean with this on

gedlive

This does smell mostly like Zino by Davidoff.

It's not a fresh barbershop fougere.
But its more of a warm spicy Oriental fougere for colder months.
It's best to think of this fragrance, not as a classic fougere, but a "Lavender dominant" fragrance.
I dont realy get the rosemary or mint here.

It has safron and cardamom. It has many aroma chemicals. They are harsh in the opening 5-10 minutes, then it smooths out.

What I like most about it, is the sweet vanilla and coumarin (aroma molecule). It smells like cinnamon.
The vanilla and cardamom, gives it a slight gourmand/ spicy vib, in a Zino kind of way.

Coumarin is said to have the smell of sweet vanilla, and freshly mown hay; I get that, and its quite dominant here; A close second to the lavandin lavender, the coarse kind of lavender. (French lavender) This lavender has some lemony freshness to it.

This is like a better quality Zino.
Like TF Italian Cypress is a better Z-14.

Just got a 100ml of this fantastic juice ... the 250 is in the mail . My new favorite scent 🤙🏼Many other reviews here doing it great justice, first private blend I’ve purchased probably the only one I’ll buy ... tobacco Vanile & lavender extreme are the only others I “sorta” like. This opening is nearly identical to Zino Davidoff .... but the transformation takes much longer and is far more dynamic . Opposite of linear , as others have said ... “ you wear this one for yourself “🤙🏼🤗

RB75

Beautiful perfume..
Heavy dose of lavender and rosemary but it has a fresh twist with all the mint which is present. Great performer. 12-13 hours later I can still feel it.
Yes it reminds me of Rive Gauche although BdJ is much more wearable. RG has lots if cloves which have been replaced with mint in BdJ.

Update; I have worn it for 4 days straight and I am addicted!!
This is freaking amazing. It is not the opening, this perfume only kicks in after 30 minutes as the mid and base notes start, once it blends and warms up with the skin. In fact, I do not think the opening is that great. But then it turns very herbal, soothing and calming.
I am seriously considering getting a 250 ml bottle of this. It would be the first TF of that size that I get. Also, better get it now before they start to mess with the formulation and water it down.

Update; ok so I got a 250 ml bottle at Ludwig Beck in Munich. Now I do not need any other perfumes in my life. Think I will sell them all :)
But seriously, this is everything I ever looked for in a perfume.

KSAmbient

I end up layering this one with Tuscan Leather and the result is magnificent. Very manly, very bold. M. Though the weather is hot, so maybe go gentle on the TL, but they work together perfectly.

clintjr82

Smells good. It’s about time tf release a good blended fragrance. Not cloying. His best release. Smells masculine. I would buy. The longevity is good

Leonyarra

A lot gets lost translation of these French names, but Beau de Jour in this context means “man of the moment”, not “man of the day”. And boy does this live up to its name! A perfect fougere, somewhere between Rive Gauche Pour Homme and Davidoff Zino. Excellent performance too.

Pagedrengen

"Belle de nuit" is French and means "Beauty of the night", i.e. a prostitute. The 1967 French movie "Belle de jour" ("Beauty of the day") uses this expression as a pun to tell the story of a beautiful young woman who spends her daytime working as a high-class prostitute in the afternoon. Now, in 2019, Tom Ford coins an all-new masculine nickname "Beau de jour" - describing a man, not a woman, that blossoms during the day. To me, this name is a pun that tells us how seeming opposites may be closely related like two sides of the same coin. Feminine and masculine. Day and night. Stylish and sexy. And, certainly, I hope this is how the fragrance makes all of us feel. Like our own, individual, unique blends of different contrasts. Very high-class.

bullybully

What an amazing scent! Brings a very specific type of person in mind. A high class, well-mannered, educated but incredibly sexy type ! Old school barber shop scent, very well blended and utterly dashing. I love it.

AndySmellsGreat

High quality classic clean fresh subdued take on the classic lavender gents cologne.

Over simplified think Drakar Noir only much more subtle and complex with a Fougere lean. More of a generic exercise for TF.

I received this as a sample.

I will not add this to my Tom Ford shelf as a FB.

Despite its merits at this price it’s for Tom Ford fans only. There are many cheaper EDTs that have ultimately a stronger performance and IMHO smell more captivating.

Edit: on me it dries down after 3-4 hours to a simple boring woody scent.

FeelingRisky

Wonderful. The best TF release in many years. He's had some good ones - but honestly this is at the top of an already long list of recent Tom Ford favorites.
Lavender and Spice would be my short go to note description. A clean shaven, expensive suit wearing, well groomed gentleman comes to mind. This is office safe and something you could wear year round all season long. I imagine this blends very well with Tuscan Leather, Tobacco Oud and Amber Absolute. 10/10 for me.

DT953

I find it almost impossible not to at least 'like' this. However, I find it hard to find any real, substantial similarities between this and Rive Gauche. More so in mood and wearability than in scent, but even in scent the similarities are few and far between.

Rive Gauche (long tin bottle I had for several years) smelt nothing like lavender to me, and all I sadly got was mint and anise. There was a 'barbershop' scent that is apparently lavender, but it smelt nothing like the plant.

This, however, does. And more. There's a courmarin type of sweet creaminess that aids the lavender and makes this far heavier than Rive Gauche ever was. Lasts better too.

I prefer this, so much much more. I don't like the price, but I adore the scent.

scentdoctor

Very very identical to rive gauche vintage.

KSAmbient

I feel it has the floral dark base of Noir once it starts to dry down.
It is way more minimal than the Noir, which gives it very contemporary edge.

It is a remarkable fragrance that I loved since the first sniff. I find it very all around scent, as it could be worn in the summer and winter, formal and casual. It is slowly becoming my signiture scent.
As a person who used the Noir and Tuscan Leather as main fragrances, this one is a great hit for me.
I find it aromatic with touch of powder smell and barber influences.

It is very contemporary fragrance with elements which respect the past, this fragrance is the way 2019 smells and feels like so far.
It is definitely masculine and vibrant smell.

gatsby

100% Rive Gauche in the new formulation (the vintage is better in all the way). Nothing spectacular, only the price. Stay away or if you like it, go with the Rive Gauche and go in holiday with the rest of the money. Cheers!

coasterfan

Beau de Jour is a very modern take on barbershop/fougere scents. I would even go so far as to call it avant-garde. The double dose of lavender on top is deliciously creamy. The dry down is among the best I've ever experienced. There is something strangely addicting about this release. I can't stop sniffing my wrist when I'm wearing it. As with most Tom Ford creations, the price is exceptionally high, but when I love a scent as much as this, sometimes the investment is worth it.

Scent: 9.5/10
Longevity: 9/10
Projection: 8/10
Price: 4/10

jayssen

Tom Ford has released a lot of masculine style scents over the last few years, for me, this is the most successful. Starting off with a heavy blast of herbs (that to be honest, I find too much), this dries down to a very nice, subtle spicy fragrance that works remarkably well. The lavender/oakmoss/amber blend lends the predictable barber shop feel, but every now and again the mint peaks out in the most delightful way. Nothing revolutionary, but strangely addictive. Incredibly strong with a vast sillage - Beau de jour has me wanting to purchase it.

Medusa82

Deciding between this or LV Orage as my new signiture scent for 2019...

charles_carmichael

Full disclosure - I've never been a fan of Tom Ford's fragrances. I find most of the private blend scents to be derivative and unoriginal, not to mention hideously overpriced. But with Beau de Jour, I've finally found a TF fragrance that feels comfortable and captures my imagination.

This fragrance is a throwback, as others have suggested, to fougeres of days' past. I have no doubt that some will find it to be overwhelmingly reminiscent of barber shops and their grandfathers. However, this is a masculine lavender that deftly manages to thread the needle between elegance and nostalgia. BdJ references fragrances like Rive Gauche, Fougere Royale, and even Drakkar Noir without feeling like a doppelganger of any of them. It shares a minty topnote with another excellent modern fougere, Chanel Boy. But BdJ is also much deeper and darker than Boy, having more in common with the rich lavender found in Kilian's A Taste of Heaven.

The interplay here between the effervescent top note, the green mid-notes, and the ever-present lavender never feels forced or heavy-handed. I consistently feel the ghost of fougeres past here, but it also exudes a freshness that doesn't feel dated at all. I still find this stuff to be rather pricey, but it is a home run as far as I'm concerned. I'd love to see more quality releases like this from TF!

Maja2812

The notes in the description have thrown me for loop! I've only tested this on the back of my hand. It starts out like a very strong lavender essential oil and then the aromatic and fougere complexity creeps up. It is definitely complex despite the very few notes above. It developed more "woodsy" with my chemistry. It reminds me of Oud Minerale without the saltiness. Someone below mentioned Boy by Chanel-- another favorite of mine and almost similar because of the geranium note. I love oud and lean towards the exotic: musk, leather, spices/oriental, aromatic, and fougere to "switch-it-up" for fragrance. This is definitely a perfume for spring and summer. As a woman who is unconventional in her fragrance choices, I would wear this and confound everyone around me!! Will be trying a sample for a better experience.

Will Bagwell

*Update

This cool, but not worth the price, for me. I have a 4 ml sample, but I barely use it.

The oakmoss and lavender go hard with this one, I must admit.

I'm gonna try Lemon Line by Mancera, then revisit my sample of this... I'm looking for a nice barbershop scent.

Michael1962

Australian release date will be within the next fortnight for Aussie Tom Ford fans interested.

Senator V.

Beau du Jour est simplement brillant. Makes up for all the others that were triumphs of publicité but not so much of the parfumeur. Like with Neroli Portofino, I want to sniff my wrist about three times an hour. There's something extra going on within the barbershop-fougère sweetness. Mint, perhaps, as others have noted. Whatever it is elevates this from just another pricey exercise in the stylist's art to something of, well, art. Chapeau, Monsieur Ford.

bha70s

First sniff reminded me of Drakkar Noir (as I remember it many years ago, not the current sweet garbage). It's very sharp, minty even. I suck with notes, sorry. This is definitely worth a try. Smells very nice...

Nick1992

Well, hello ‘70s revival.

Like so much of the man’s tailoring, Tom Ford’s new Beau de Jour is a perfect blend of seventies glamour and contemporary execution. Balancing the classic fougère notes of lavender, mint, oakmoss and geranium with today’s de rigueur patchouli and ambroxan, Beau de Jour is a fantastic retro wear with herbaceous lavender flair and a weighty dry down.

A much better release in my opinion than either Fougère d’Argent or Fougère Platine, fans of the genre and/or Rive Gauche pour Homme really should take to this.

Very traditionally masculine, longevity is very good at 10-12 hours with moderate sillage for the first 6 hours.

8.5/10

JackieM

Tried it on today. First moments: Herbal, zesty, fresh, outdoorsy. I even thought I smelled dill and possibly mint. Eventually though this becomes 99% modern patchouli on me, a gentler version of TF Patchouli Absolu. It loses almost all the other notes unfortunately.

I'd say this is the best new one from him in a while, but I own PA, too close of a relative for me. If I want herbal and aromatic, I go to Chanel Boy, which is far gentler and more reasonably feminine on me, and lacks the patch. While I don't really subscribe to the gender appointments of many scents, I cannot deny that this "wears me" instead of the other way around. I feel like I'm sitting next to a gentleman at the theater rather than wearing perfume myself.

Jerard

Wow an actual niche fragrance marketed as for men, as oppose to the perennial "unisex" category, let alone a Tom Ford fragrance? Not even Ombré Leather was marketed as for men.
This better be good as well as masculine!

The dry down of TF Beau de Jour seems to be a direct interpretation of Aramis Devin, with a slightly more modern and acerbic beginning.

Beau de Jour marks another great release from the Tom Ford Private Blend line in the wake of Fougere d'Argent, another creation that blends the modern and the classic in a seemingly heavy-handed nod to classic men's fragrances of decades past.

The key note in the fragrance is fresh, sharp lavender, further sharpened by geranium, with the herbal touch of rosemary, and supporting anchors of patchouli and amber. There are a few other additives but these are the main players that factor into my perception of the fragrance.

Again, to compare to FDA, as there's a natural sort of continuity, BDJ is sharper and a little more challenging to wear, but feels more like an "daytime all-day" fragrance, while FDA feels more apropos at night, and is slightly sweeter and overall easier to wear.

Moreover, BDJ, like, FDA, is a great performer, not in the uppermost tier of the Tom Ford Private Blend line (a high standard, for something, like Tobacco Vanille).

And, at $235 for 50ml, it's good that interesting new offerings are still in what is the LOWER tier of pricing for Private Blends, contra the higher end at $320 for 50ml. There are plenty of deals to be had on secondary markets or Facebook enthusiast groups.

Overall, a great release, and I hope to see more like these from Tom Ford, though I wonder how many they can realistically churn out like this and FDA without being too redundant.

A high-end, non-gourmand version of Mugler's A*Men Pure Lavender.

I absolutely agree that this is a variation on Rive Gauche Pour Homme by YSL. I pick up the same lavender, rosemary, geranium, mint, oakmoss, with some minor additional notes. Although not worth the price tag, I respect Tom Ford for taking on traditional fougeres in his past few releases. Overall I love it, since I love Rive Gauche and other barbershop scents.

The irony here that everyone is overlooking is that Tom Ford created both YSL's Rive Gauche Pour Homme (during his stint at YSL) and Beau de Jour: little surprise they smell similar. Can lightning strike twice? Only time will tell.

UPDATE 2/3: This one is quite reminiscent of the 80s powerhouses like Jazz, Zino, and Antaeus, but mostly reminds me of YSL's Rive Gauche Pour Homme. It's deep and rich, while maintaining a modern tilt. I like it but TF prices are sometimes unjustifiable.

I have spent some time over the last few days with this one, and I am very pleased. Definitely has an 80s masculine vibe. I get the comparisons in some of the reviews below to other private blends, and there is a very light background of the mineral effect from anthracite, however, I think this one is blended much smoother than either of the fougere offerings, and has a throwback nod to an oak moss of olden days, we’ll as much as you could expect, but it is a quality scent. I have yet to get that screechy metallic note that seems to come with any of the current fougere accords coming out from lots of houses, and the patchouli is dark and very purposeful, keeping it away from just trying to copy a Rive or Old Spice. This is nice, masculine, and very wearable. Check it out!

Beau de Jour is Tom Ford`s take on classic men`s barbershop scent. The resemblance to YSL Rive Gauche is definitely present but Beau de Jour is a modernized version of Rive Gauche with better quality ingredients. Also the drydown of Beau de Jour has more amber and patchouli typical for most Tom Ford fragrances. Of course the star of this scent is lavender and its probably the best lavender scent that I`ve encountered so far. Beau de Jour is Tom Ford impeccable suit and tie in a bottle!

Take Patchouli absolute and add some lavender and viola, you get this. Pretty uninspiring.

@josh.moore27 that’s my hope as well. I’m scraping the bottom of my Moss Breches and have been hoping for a rerelease but this sounds promising.

I tried this on paper this afternoon. I get a masculine scent that is dominated by lavender and patchouli; rounded nicely with fougere notes. It has a classic vibe and exudes quality.

It smells familiar to my nose and vaugely reminds me of Rive Gauche by YSL. Beau De Jour probably has a higher dose of patchouli while Rive Gauche was more rounded with aromatic notes.

I like the classic aromatic fougere scents and patchouli note; so I enjoy this scent a lot. If you like this genre of scents, then give this one a try. It's one of the best executions that I smelled recently.

Received a sample from my local Saks, and WOW! Is this juice good. It has the sophistication of a classic barbershop scent with an added note of mint to give it a bright freshness to it. On my skin, it's a beautiful mix of mint, patchouli, and amber, that takes me back to when I was a kid getting my haircut from the corner barber my dad would go to.

josh.moore27

Hopefully it’s similar to Moss Breches which was one of the best.

This has that "barbershop" vibe written all on it, based on the scent pyramid.

I hope this is a good one.

Just won a sample from Brooklyn Fragrance Lover. I'll be sure to post a real review when it comes in the mail.

Tom Ford ain’t half bangin’ out the Fougere fragrances of late. I remain optimistic in the light of the other two not exactly spellbinding me, this stuff has very promising notes and no one is rooting for Beau de jour more than me. However, I want something with depth, with something new about it or if it can’t manage that... just be classically good. Main thing I’m looking for is for it to be STRONG!

Freedomlover

Really can't wait to try this sounds really interesting.
