Sem-3 students allege ragging by seniors

Srinagar, Apr 16: For the last few days, the Kashmir Law College at Nowshera area of Srinagar has literally become a battleground over the issue of ragging between the seniors and the juniors of the college.
On Thursday, there was a fight between the students of semester 3 and semester 8 over ragging and the situation took an ugly turn when few outsiders-reported to be the friends of the semester 3 students-barged into the college premises.
The students of the college said that the situation turned violent after two local outsiders entered the campus, and who later started beating some senior students of the college injuring them baldy.
A junior student of the college however said that he was thrashed by a senior of semester 8 to such an extent that his “eardrum suffered a fracture” including internal bleeding.
“The semester 8 students always do it; they beat, thrash junior students and resort to the offence of ragging, they claim that they are the seniors and do anything,” the students said.
The students were aghast and demanded to know how come the college authorities allow ragging on the college campus when the same has been banned by the Supreme Court.
“The menace ragging has been there for quite a time, one of our classmates attempted suicide because of it; the student could not bear the harassment and tried to put an end to her life,” the students said.
As of now, if the accounts of the junior students are considered, then the blame falls on the seniors of semester 8 of the college. “We don’t go to the college for this madness; these seniors have disrupted it all,” the students said while demanding strict action against the erring seniors.
On the other side, the seniors have outrightly rejected the claims and have termed the allegations as baseless. “You kindly check our records as we are there for last more than 4 years now, there is not a single complaint against us,” said a semester 8 student Sajad Ahmad during a protest held in the Press Enclave.
He said that the semester 3 students in turn ragged the students of the fresh batch and that the allegations of ragging against them are baseless. “They ragged the first semester students; while the authorities might be taking action in the matter, they should listen to our side as well,” the semester 8 students said.
While the college authorities have not taken any action against the erring students, the Principal Law College has rather suspended the classwork at the college from Saturday.
However, later on, it has come to the fore that while taking cognizance of the matter, the college has constituted a disciplinary committee that has been tasked to investigate the matter.
Also, it has been learned that the college authorities showcase notice to three 8th semester students who were allegedly involved in the “misconduct” on the college campus.
