This action packed sequel to In a Cold Dark Place is a take-your-breathe-away suspense with more than a breath of romance. I normally don't like roller coasters but this ride was a blast, loved it! Trapped in a mall when terrorist start shooting, Vivi Vincent hides her, maybe autistic, son so she can try to find a nearby store with an exit. Before she finds an exit, she is encounters an FBI special agent who insists that she takes away the two children she had found under the body of their mother before the baby's crying reveals their location. He promises that she will be able to come back, but of course no one will let her return. When news announce that her son was in the store where several terrorist stayed, then shows a segment taped earlier in the day that shows that her son does not speak but he can draw from memory anyone that he has seen even for a second, she must surrender to witness protection to keep him safe. The FBI agent manages to get onto the task force and keep an eye on them. The task force determines that the terrorist from must have a secondary plan they the boy might have overheard because they are persistent in trying to kill him!

This time around the author chose a terrorist attack as the plot. Jed is an overworked agent on a forced vacation & just happens to be at the mall shopping when the attack occurs and ends up getting personally attached to single mom, Vivi & her special 8 year old son. It's a very interesting tangled web of blackmail, deception, secrecy & even a shocking Gateway revelation of the true enemy. In the end this couple realizes they can handle it all with each other to lean on. This story wasn't quite as romantic as previous, (A Cold Dark Place) it's still a great read & it was also great to get an update on Alex & Mallory. (My review is based on the unabridged audio version which the author provided)

This book starts off with a bang, Toni throws you right into the action. Vivi and her son Michael are visiting a mall and all of sudden they are in the middle of a terrorist attack. It was so realistic and I can't imagine having to go through everything they did. They survive but now Michael has a target on his back. Special Agent Jed Brennan helped save Vivi and Michael and now will do everything in his power to keep them safe. I loved Jed and Vivi's relationship, it was unconventional and yet they created a bond that was unwavering. I loved the whole story and it was so entertaining, keeping me glued to the pages. Toni writes stories that make you wish they would never end. I'm so happy that we get to see characters again in other books and we get to stay within this world! I absolutely loved this book and am looking forward to Cold Light Of Day!
