VIU is launching a new Summer School and a webinar series (within the Global Challenges Initiatives) to address one of the most discussed and debated criteria for access to intensive care during the Covid-19 pandemic. On the one hand, there are those who consider the age criterion as an ethical, objective, and cost-effective criterion, capable of achieving the greatest good for the greatest number. On the other hand, however, we have those who contest it, considering it an example of ageism, or discrimination against older people.

In 2021 the Summer Institute on Ageing will reach its 8th edition. The Summer Institute provides students and early-career researchers with a multidisciplinary and rigorous understanding of the ageing process, ranging from some basic notions of the medical and epidemiological literature to an extensive treatment of economics and of the sociological dimensions.

Ageing | Antimicrobial Resistance and Vaccines | e-Learning Course

Antimicrobial resistance is now considered a threat to planetary health. In fact, the mortality linked to antibiotic-resistant infections in Europe alone corresponds to approximately 33,000 deaths yearly and the economic burden of antimicrobial resistance has been estimated to be approximately € 1.5 billion per year. In order to raise awareness on the topic, the European Interdisciplinary Council on Ageing (EICA) launched in 2020 its first international e-learning course on Antimicrobial resistance and the role of Vaccine. The course will be available up to April 27, 2021.

Ageing | Pneumococcal Disease in Old Adults during the Covid-19 Pandemic| e-Learning Course

This e-learning opportunity is an ad hoc training proposal in the sector of pneumonia, which is frequent and often associated with serious complications in the elderly population. In addition to the epidemiological and clinical aspects, the course has opened up a discussion on the various international recommendations in the field of anti-pneumococcal vaccinations.

The problems faced by the city appear frequently in the news: acqua alta - the flooding caused by high tides, pollution, over-tourism, and currently the paradoxical challenge of a deserted city during the pandemic. pandemic. ‘VIU Community’ is a platform where VIU students and Professors can all interact across cultures across different mediums: articles, images, thoughts, intercultural experiences etc. The platform is managed by the recipients of the RED (Residency-Excellence-Diversity) scholarships. The RED scholarships are awarded every semester to talented students to contribute to the cost of living in Venice for a semester and to promote excellence and diversity in the Globalization Program. This term’s RED scholars are Francesca Virzi, Olivia Fothergill, and Luka Pejic.

For Bachelor and Master's students attending a semester of the Globalization Program and who wish to do an internship in a host organization in Italy following the semester. The internships are for two to four months, and will take place following the semester of courses at VIU, either during the winter break or during the summer months.
