Horizon League Releases 2023-24 #HLWBB All-League Awards

INDIANAPOLIS (March 4, 2024) – The Horizon League revealed our 2023-24 #HLWBB awards on Monday. Awards were voted on by the League’s head coaches.
 
Cleveland State’s Colbi Maples was named the Horizon League Player of the Year. Teammate Mickayla Perdue was voted the Newcomer of the Year and another fellow Viking, Carmen Villalobos, earned Defensive Player of the Year recognition. Cleveland State head coach Chris Kielsmeier was selected as the Coach of the Year.
 
Northern Kentucky’s Carter McCray picked up Freshman of the Year honors, Green Bay’s Callie Genke and Milwaukee’s Grace Crowley collected the Sixth Player of the Year Awards and Milwaukee’s Kendall Nead and Youngstown State’s Mady Aulbach won the League’s Sportsmanship Awards.

  • This season, Maples averaged 16.6 points, 4.3 assists and 2.0 steals on 46 percent shooting from the field in League games.
    • Maples earned All-League First Team and All-Defensive Team honors as well.
  • Perdue was second in the League in points per game (19.0) and first in 3-point field goals (49) in #HLWBB play this season.
    • Perdue also won Player of the Week honors twice this season.
  • Villalobos logged 45 steals (second in the League) and 16 blocks (tied-seventh in the League) in Cleveland State’s League games.
    • In #HLWBB play, Villalobos led the Vikings in rebounds per game with 6.8.
  • Chris Kielsmeier won his first #HLWBB Coach of the Year Award after leading the Vikings to their first regular season title in program history.
  • McCray was the only #HLWBB player to average a double-double (16.3 points, 11.0 rebounds) this season.
    • McCray earned Freshman of the Week honors seven times this season.
  • Genke reached double-digits in points three times for the Phoenix in League games.
  • Crowley shot 65 percent from the field and 81 percent from the free throw line in #HLWBB play this season.
  • The Sportsmanship Award recognizes student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through demonstrated acts of sportsmanship and ethical behavior. Sportsmanship is defined as behavior exhibited during competition by student-athletes based on values, respect and integrity.
    • Nead and Aulbach both represent their institutions on the League’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (#HLSAAC).
  • Green Bay paced the League with three All-League selections while Cleveland State, Northern Kentucky and Purdue Fort Wayne added two selections each.
  • The first round of the 2024 Barbasol #HLWBB championship will take place on Tuesday, March 5, with all games scheduled to start at 7 p.m. ET.
    • No. 6 seed Detroit Mercy will take on No. 11 seed RMU.
    • No. 7 seed Youngstown State will face No. 10 seed IUPUI.
    • No. 8 seed Oakland will battle No. 9 seed Northern Kentucky.
  • The quarterfinal round will be held on Thursday, March 7.
    • No. 1 Cleveland State will face the lowest-remaining seed at 7 p.m. ET.
    • No. 2 seed Green Bay will play the second lowest-remaining seed at 6:30 p.m. ET.
    • No. 3 seed Purdue Fort Wayne will take on the highest-remaining seed at 7 p.m. ET.
    • No. 4 seed Wright State will battle No. 5 seed Milwaukee.
  • The first round, quarterfinals and semifinals of the 2024 Barbasol Horizon League Women’s Championship will be streamed live on ESPN+ while the championship game will be on ESPNU.
