Birdwatching Tips

Birdwatching at Warwick

Warwick is home to many beautiful species of birds – and now’s a great time of year to spot them!

We met up with RSPB member Laura Craddock from Warwick Business School, and Dr Ian Farnell from Theatre and Performance Studies, to hear their top tips for birdwatching at home and on campus.

What's the most interesting bird you've spotted at Warwick? Let us know in the comments section.

Biodiversity walk on campus

If you enjoy discovering birds or simply want to spend some time outdoors in nature, why not sign up for the next Biodiversity Walk (Wednesday 28 February)?

Help us monitor birds on campus

When you spot birds on campus, please send your sightings to sustainability@warwick.ac.uk with the what.3.words location - the Energy and Sustainability Team would love to know what you find!

Useful apps

  • No idea what bird you've just seen or heard? Use the Merlin ID app.
  • Did you manage to photograph a bird on campus? Record the sighting on the iNaturalist app.

Our sustainability strategy

At Warwick, we have a 'Way to Sustainable Strategy', and one of the five goals is to ‘Realise ecology & biodiversity net gain’. This means we are actively working to make campus a better home for wildlife.

Birdwatching top tips

1. Set your alarm a little earlier- birds tend to be most active at dawn when it's cooler and quieter

2. Take a closer look with binoculars- use binoculars with large lenses to let in more light

3. Keep your ears pricked- learn to recognise different calls and songs to develop your birdwatching skills

4. Be still, quiet and look all around you- from the ground to the trees and up into the sky.

5. Download a bird identification app- we recommend the Merlin Bird ID app to identify species through pictures or sounds
