Reviving trade: The way forward

February 22nd - 25th 2021, Hong Kong

An increasing number of citizens worldwide are dissatisfied with democracy, and in recent years, divisive elections in the world’s most advanced democracies have hastened the trend. According to polling by the Pew Research Center, dissatisfaction is highest among those who are pessimistic about the next generation’s prospects. The future of democracy can often seem under threat.

It has never been more important to create a more equitable democratic future, but for such hopes to be realised, there needs to be an examination of the causes for people’s dissatisfaction.

Join this event to hear:

  • What is driving people’s frustrations with democracy, and what reforms to political systems do people want to see to address those frustrations?
  • Are people still committed to the idea of democracy, or do leaders need to fundamentally change how they communicate its benefits?
  • Do new technologies have a role to play in addressing people’s concerns about the quality of democracy, and to improve transparency in the political process?

This discussion, hosted by The Economist Events and supported by Pew Research Center, will convene a panel of global leaders to discuss the state of democracy across the world, and what changes might be needed to ensure its future.
