As a deeply invested members of the hospitality industry, we are witnessing firsthand how our current tax system disproportionately impacts us and the devastating effects that is having to our industry with over 5000 Hospitality businesses lost just this year alone.

As a high turnover, low profit industry which is labour intensive and has high fixed costs. The tax system must change.

The financial hurdles we face are unprecedented and continue to grow. Over recent years, wages have increased by c20%, food prices have risen by c11.5%, utilities costs have doubled, and business rates are are disproportional in a new online world.

The hospitality industry is not asking for special treatment but rather a fair playing field. A reduction in VAT to 10% would provide much-needed relief and help level the playing field with supermarkets and online sales which often benefit from lower tax rates as well as giving us parity with Europe. It would also be a tax reduction which would be replaced with increased corporation tax returns, so in the long term it would be beneficial to the treasury.

It's important to note that this is not just about businesses; it's about people too - our employees who depend on us for their livelihoods, our customers who rely on us for social interaction and the Hosptiality we provide. We are the third biggest employer in the UK employing over 3 Million people and with the advent of AI we will become a ever more important employer. An industry that generates £40 Billion in TAX revenues and over £138 Billion in sales.

We urge you to consider this proposal seriously as it could make a significant difference in keeping many businesses afloat during these challenging times while also contributing positively towards economic recovery of the nation.
