Nick Gaertner DIRECTOR & CHIEF OPERATIONS OFFICER, KNIGHT FRANK SOUTH AFRICA

A Monthly Update from Knight Frank Residential South Africa

A

nd just like that, the second month of 2021 has shot past us and we are into March, marking the beginning of a new financial year for many businesses and institutions. Knight Frank experienced a large increase in market activity throughout February and with schools slowly beginning to settle down and businesses able to accommodate a larger number of staff at work, activity levels are expected to continue normalising over the coming weeks. In this month’s edition of the Standing Out magazine, we focus on the launch of The Wealth Report 2021, one of Knight Frank’s most anticipated and globally recognised publications. It provides in-depth and interesting insights as to where Ultra-high-net-worth individuals (UHNWIs) are investing, where they spend their money, alternative investment trends and what has been happening in major cities around the world. I hope you enjoy it.

T

he 2021 edition of The Wealth Report is out now! The global perspective on prime property and investment, including global wealth movements, property hotspots around the world and luxury investment trends. Our new digital edition contains all of the same fantastic content as our print edition, such as an interview with world-renowned photographer David Yarrow, the latest perspectives on ESG and innovation, and our take on the impact of the pandemic on global wealth. The Wealth Report 2021 assesses how the fortunes of UHNWIs are changing, where they spend time, what they invest in and what they are likely to do next. From policymakers to investors, a lack of insight into the behaviour and attitudes of the “1%” risks a serious misreading of economic trends. This is the knowledge gap we fill. All of this, plus cutting-edge insight.

Meet

Ryk Neethling Val de Vie Estate Marketing Director and Shareholder Multi-record-breaking World Champion Swimmer and Olympic Gold Medallist & International Keynote and Motivational Speaker

10

MEET RYK NEETHLING

R

yk Neethling has played an instrumental role since his appointment in 2010 as the Marketing Director and Shareholder of the Val de Vie Group of Companies. The experience he gained in the USA enabled him to establish Cape Winelands Properties, the official onsite property agency for Val de Vie Estate, with his business partners. His strategic approach to implementing brand and marketing plans is evident in the numerous successfully sold-out developments of the Val de Vie Group of Companies. Under Ryk’s leadership, the Val de Vie brand has internationally been positioned as pioneering in the world of luxury property development. Ryk Neethling was born in Bloemfontein in the Free State of South Africa where he attended Grey College Primary and High Schools. After school, he enrolled at the University of the Free State for a few months where he studied law before moving to the United States. Here he graduated from the University of Arizona in 2001 after studying Industrial Psychology with a minor in Business.

In 2003 he resigned, with their full support, to try and achieve his dream of Olympic Gold in 2004. The lessons Ryk has learnt on the way to Olympic Gold remain relevant in his day-to-day life.

I’ve always been intrigued by real estate development and the fact that I had excellent mentors just enhanced my love for the industry.

“Have clear goals, try to be consistent every day, focus on what you can control, let the failures motivate you and look after your team.”

Ryk then proceeded to obtain his Arizona Real Estate License and started working for a commercial real estate brokerage and development company – namely Bourn Partners in Arizona and California – in the capacity of sales and leasing broker.

The most rewarding aspect of his current career is the wide range of skills needed on a daily basis to be successful – design, marketing, sales, human resources, market analysis and finance.

“I started right at the bottom, cold calling industrial tenants and going from factory to factory. It was a young and growing company and I had some wonderful mentors.”

Ryk has no shortage of achievements, all of which he considers career highlights. These include his current position as Marketing Director and Shareholder of

“Every day is different and a challenge.”

Val de Vie Estate, Order of Ikhamanga in Silver (awarded to South African citizens who have excelled in the fields of arts, culture, literature, music, journalism or sport), Olympic Gold Medallist, first South African to compete in four Olympic Games, three-time World Champion, five-time world record breaker, twotime American College Swimmer of the Year, University of Arizona Athlete of the Century, Laureus Sport for Good Ambassador (an award honouring the achievements of those who have demonstrated tremendous contribution to sport or to society through sport) and CEO of the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation from 2017 – 2020. What motivates Ryk today is the same as what motivated him when he swam: To make the most of every day and to take a small step forward towards his goals. 11

Standing Out Magazine | MARCH 2021

When he is not hard at work, Ryk pursues a variety of activities and passions. For one, he has recently started playing polo and developed a love for horses. He also enjoys reading, gardening, travelling and exploring our beautiful country. “I’ve been very fortunate to travel extensively through my swimming career and for work, but I have to say the most memorable place I’ve visited in the past few years has to be Madagascar.” Val de Vie Estate is South Africa’s most secure luxury lifestyle estate and Val de Vie Evergreen (set within it) was recently awarded top luxury estate in the world at the International Property Awards. In partnership with Evergreen Lifestyle, the development promises a lifestyle focused on wellness.

12

MEET RYK NEETHLING

The Wealth Report 2021 One of the key trends that shaped prime residential prices in 2020 was the increasing relevance of wellness and wellbeing. Demand for homes in locations that offer wellness and wellbeing was already on the rise pre-Covid-19, but it has been catapulted up UHNWI (Ultrahigh-net-worth individual) agendas by the pandemic. “In many respects, the old mantra [of Location, Location, Location] is starting to change, to focus on three new elements – connectivity, amenity and place. The role of the places where people spend their work time, their leisure time and indeed their home life is increasingly important. I think the pandemic will strengthen the desire for quality places.” – David Hutton, Singaporebased Managing Director of Development at Lendlease, one of the world’s biggest developers.

GREAT OAKS RETIREMENT

Holistic Memory Care Enhancing a Meaningful & Fulfilling Life

A

s no two people with memory loss are ever alike, a person-centred approach to memory care seems more sensible and compassionate than a standardised one. In fact, meeting the emotional, physical and spiritual needs of each individual will go a long way in maximising their well-being and enhance their day-today living, while also offering them the best chance at a meaningful and fulfilling life. By employing a collaborative care approach through getting to know residents and working with their loved ones, one is able to tailor holistic care plans to suit individual needs. Add to that a host of therapeutic interventions such as art, reminiscence and pet therapy, this approach brings a range of benefits for those living with memory loss – no matter the stage they are currently living in. These include: Increased Happiness Person-centred care means getting to know a resident and understanding what they love and how they are motivated. This personal connection adds to increased joy. Increased Independence Knowing and understanding the needs of each resident, means that caregivers can encourage them to do as much as they can on their own – giving them the drive, courage and boost in self-esteem

needed to try new things or focus on beloved hobbies again. The Possibility of Decreased Dependence on Medication Residents who are fulfilled and engaged and who feel relaxed and secure in themselves and their surroundings, may not need to rely on medication as much as others. A First of its Kind in South Africa At the recently launched Great Oaks retirement village in Constantia, choice, respect, dignity and purpose form the cornerstones of their care philosophy. The focus will be on the person, not the condition and services and interventions will be fuelled by what they learn about an individual patient.

The memory care service that will be offered within the Great Oaks retirement community is therefore purposefully designed and groundbreaking – the first of its kind in South Africa. Safe, adaptive and communal living spaces, colour-coded aids and enriching therapeutic interventions invite interaction and enhance the homely feel, while specialised and committed nursing staff will offer world-class, personcentered care, 24 hours a day. More information about the Great Oaks’ specialist healthcare offering can be found at www.greatoaksvillage.co.za. You can also contact the sales team on +27 (0)73 119 9999 to talk about their holistic approach to memory care.

Gardening with Fatima The garden in all its beauty is smiling at you for the last time before winter sets in and roses show off their flower power in too many colours too mention.

22

GARDENING WITH FATIMA

Autumn’s Magnificent Colours & Garden Maintenance Must-dos

A

utumn in the Cape is a stunning temperate season that plays out between March and May. The foliage starts to transform and fall, turning the world around us into earthy browns splashed with vibrant yellows, oranges and reds. It is a sign of new beginnings to come and a time to start getting cosy. It is also an important time for horticulturists as gardens need to be prepared for winter and readied for spring.

Autumn is a second spring when every leaf becomes a flower. – Albert Camus

While gardening and landscaping trends lean towards simplification, colour still plays a significant role in design and can be powerful in terms of evoking emotions. Certain colours have the ability to instil a sense of tranquillity while others bring about feelings of excitement. They can take a feeling or mood from cool to warm or light to dark. Colours in plants can be used to highlight or complement a design. Repetition can bring balance or add drama. Intentional contrast can

add interest or surprise. Colour can even fulfil a function such as offer a framework or provide structure – whether that be literally or aesthetically. How we perceive plants is also influenced by the colours of objects in their immediate environment whether that be other plants, ornaments or structures. So while colour does not necessarily sit at the centre of landscaping, its impact should certainly be acknowledged and

its potential can definitely be harnessed for optimal results. Once established and nurtured, deciduous trees can bring brilliance and drama to your garden and neighbourhood all on their own. Some of the most impressive ones include the indigenous Combretum kraussii (forest bushwillow) as well as the exotic Liquidambar styraciflua (sweet gum) and Quercus palustris (pin oak).

23

Standing Out Magazine | MARCH 2021

Autumn Gardening Tips While progress seems to slow or stand still above ground during colder months, plants continue to expand below ground by providing water to and growing their roots. The best time to start pruning is midMarch, unless it is too hot. In that case, hold back until it is a bit cooler. Pruning prompts regrowth before winter sets in and extends the lifespan of the plant. Long and overgrown plants such as lavenders, Veronicas, begonias and impatiens can be pruned and tidied up. IMPORTANT: Only after spring flowering should you prune Cape May Bush (Spiraea ‘Flero Pleno’) and Japanese snowball trees (Viburnum plicatum). You can start a compost heap with all the pruning material. It is a good idea to divide agapanthus and propagate from soft and hardwood cuttings such as plectranthus, lavenders and heliotropes this time of year. Be sure to use a rooting hormone powder such as Dynaroot (a proudly South African product) to stimulate fast and prolific rooting of plant cuttings.

24

GARDENING WITH FATIMA

Also dig over all beds to aerate the soil and compost (just be mindful of irrigation pipes when turning with a fork). As a rule we turn beds annually. Simple, manual weeding is sufficient for the rest of the year. Nutrition never seizes to be important so go ahead and feed your entire garden, including your lawn, with an organic fertiliser once a month. A 3:1:5 or any high potassium fertiliser will help with the production of flowers. Keep spraying and feeding as required, especially roses, to ensure proliferation of flowers and remember to check the staking of existing and new shrubs and trees.

Lastly, mulch the garden to keep the soil warm in winter, cool in summer and to reduce weeds. This time of year you can set the lawn mower’s blades at the lowest mowing height to promote growth before winter. If necessary, plant lawn plugs or cuttings. Also adjust your irrigation system with the climate by taking temperature, sun distribution and rain into consideration. It is the best time of the year to be in your garden, so happy gardening! TWO OCEANS AQUARIUM

Discover a Magnificently Colourful World of Diverse Marine Species in a variety of shapes and sizes

T

he Two Oceans Aquarium can be found in the V&A Waterfront. Here, more than 100 staff members, interns and volunteers work tirelessly behind the scenes to bring the aquarium to life every morning.

Rainbow Nation on the Reef Tropical fish use colours as flags or advertisements. Some colours warn of danger and others advertise cleaning services. Patterns and colours also help to camouflage the fish, making it difficult for predators to see its true shape amongst corals and sponges. Some species even mimic others.

A Glimpse into South Africa’s Warm Waters At 1.6 million litres, the I&J Ocean Exhibit provides a massive home to rays, musselcrackers, green sea turtles, a giant guitarfish and much more. Whether viewed from the 10-metre long transparent tunnel or the giant viewing window, this exhibit is your glimpse into South Africa’s warm waters.

Save Our Seas Foundation Shark Exhibit The exciting exhibit gives you the chance to experience a close encounter with some of the most misunderstood species in South Africa’s oceans. Meet the shiver of ragged-tooth sharks, watch schools of giant yellowtail hunt for their next meal and witness the curious, but

territorial, yellowbelly rockcod stand its ground to much larger predators.

The Kelp Forest Exhibit Giant sea bamboo grows like tall trees, fish swim through the algae fronds like birds and abalone, sea urchins and rock lobsters feed and take cover among the root-like holdfasts in this underwater forest.

The Penguin Exhibit This exhibit is home to a colony of African penguins, some rescued rockhopper penguins, an African black oystercatcher, a mole snake, a Western leopard toad and common platannas. A small selection of freshwater fish can also be viewed in several pools. A bird hide offers people a place to sit and relax in this peaceful riverine environment.

Puppet Shows Children between the ages of 3 and 9 will love the Puppet Shows presented several times a day by their talented team.

Why Visit This March? It is March of the Penguin – a monthlong celebration of our flippered friends featuring fun activities, learning about the environmental issues affecting African penguins and sharing the love with our favourite waddlers in general.

Host an Event The aquarium can accommodate conferences, events and functions. TWO OCEANS AQUARIUM IS OPEN 365 DAYS A YEAR.

Unlimited Access An annual membership gives you access to the Aquarium every day of the year – for less than the price of three tickets.

Sue Bond Interiors

SUE BOND INTERIORS - ON COLOURS

Enriching Sanctuaries with Colour and Texture

I

n 2021, the search for increased comfort and safety continue to shape our decisions and inform our actions.

THERE ARE SO MANY WONDERFUL WAYS TO ENRICH ONE’S HOME WITH COLOUR AND TEXTURE.

Individuals, couples and families have had ample time to critically assess their homes – the layout, outdoor areas, structural features, all the rooms and their uses, amenities and décor. This has led to many realisations and subsequently rational desires for improvements.

Headboards, sofas and armchairs can be beautifully reupholstered while textured rugs can instantly add character and warmth. Rich mustards, emerald greens and luxurious velvets may serve as inspiration.

A Time for Change There is no better time than autumn to shed what no longer worked in 2020 and Sue Bond encourages those who have the opportunities and means to make the changes they have envisioned in the past year. “We may have a long winter ahead of us so there is no need to delay nesting.”

How to Enrich Your Sanctuary Since we have embraced more relaxed lifestyles and rediscovered the pleasures of staying and dining in, we can make our spaces more sumptuous. Enriching them in any way, whether elaborate or simple, will promote not only physical comfort but perhaps bring more peace of mind.

We may have a long winter ahead of us so there is no need to delay nesting.

Curtains and drapes can be considered for rooms that only have blinds and existing curtains can be updated with passementerie. This French word encompasses ribbons, fringes, trims and tassels that embellish furnishings and decorative items such as upholstery, curtains and pillows, adding a layer of interest and noticeable depth. Trimmings or edgings can be crafted from applied braid, gold or silver cord, embroidery, coloured silk or beads.

Wallpapers, too, can have a significant impact, especially natural ones such as grasscloth. There is no need to apply it to the entire room either. Simply choose a focal wall. Scatter cushions – in an array of colours, patterns and textures – can add instant warmth and depth and are one of the most economical choices. So are beautiful handknitted blankets and plush throws that can be tastefully draped and displayed. Decorating with art is another delightful pursuit that, when done right, can evoke powerful positive emotions and enhance one’s mood. You can take it even further by combining a vintage print with vibrant wallpaper.

41

42

SUE BOND INTERIORS - ON COLOURS

And let us not forget elements such as handmade baskets, stunning ceramics, strategically placed mirrors and ornate vases that make for marvellous elements in a home. Why not invest in local designs and products, especially those that incorporate eco-friendly, sustainable and natural materials? Of course, nothing adds more warmth than a fireplace, freestanding or built in. If this is something you have always dreamt of then maybe it is time to make it a reality… Sue Bond has an excellent eye for wallpapers and scatter cushions and her utterly unique combinations culminate in the most magnificent results. This creative precision is afforded to all her interior considerations. Happy Nesting! he slopes of Signal Hill and Devil’s Peak are adorned with a critically endangered vegetation by the name of Peninsula Shale Renosterveld (PSR). While fairly healthy, only 11% of the remaining 13% Peninsula Shale Renosterveld is protected from development. Its main threats currently include mowing, invasive alien plants and fire prevention.

The blue-eyed uintjie (Moraea aristata), a large and striking flower that blooms in winter, is of particular interest to botanists and conservationists, being both endemic and critically endangered.

What makes it so remarkable and at the same time significant, is that this unique Renosterveld cannot be found anywhere else in the world. It is also the wettest type of Renosterveld vegetation in existence for which it has the Cape’s rainy winters to thank. The Renosterbos bush (the vegetation’s signature plant) is, strangely enough, not as common as tall shrubs that are abundant in variety, the Wax Karee plant being one of them.

in winter, is of particular interest to botanists and conservationists, being both endemic and critically endangered. Bulb and grass species found here owe their diverse existence to wildfires that are known to plague the Cape. However, to survive, PSR needs to burn once every four years. Worth noting is that if large game animals were to be reintroduced into Cape Town, Signal Hill and Devil’s Peak would be fit for the part, nutrition-wise.

CITY ROCK - CAPE TOWN

Discover a fun way of exercising in a safe and vibrant environment.

I

f the February Edition sparked your interest in rock climbing, then CityROCK is the perfect place to get a taste of the sport, in a safe environment – that is, before investing in gear or unwisely braving the mountains without experience. The great thing is you can challenge yourself, both physically and mentally, at your own pace and level. Whether you are a beginner or pro, there is a place for you to play and challenge yourself at CityROCK. Auto(matic) belay is a great introduction to high climbing as you do not need experience or a climbing partner. There are many auto belay routes you can tackle without anyone’s assistance or having to pass a course. Top rope high climbing, on the other hand, requires a team of two – climber and belayer. Anyone belaying needs to have passed the Belay Test. If you are new to climbing, you can learn how to manage the ropes during an introductory belay lesson for top rope climbing. If you want to do lead climbing (which entails ascending the wall and clipping the rope into protection as you go along) you have to pass the Lead Test. Of course, many members and visitors

simply hang out with their friends in the large bouldering area featuring a great range of cool problems (routes). No ropes are required here.

Whether you are a beginner or pro, there is a place for you to play and challenge yourself at CityROCK.

Other Amenities Additional amenities and perks include yoga and other classes in a beautiful studio, a dedicated area with training equipment to increase strength and flexibility and the coffee and snack bar where you can sit back and enjoy free WiFi and one of their legendary cappuccinos.

Events Venue CityROCK is a great venue for corporate team building and kids parties. BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL Strict COVID-19 protocols are in place and booking for each climbing session is essential for members and visitors.

“We offer an impressive 2 500 m2 of high climbing walls featuring high wall climbing up to 16 m, ranging from very easy to extremely challenging routes.”

I love the CBD. There are so many different facets to the city with old buildings and new, combined with modern mixed-use developments.

A

fully qualified real estate agent, Corinne’s experience ranges from management to sales and rentals. Currently, however, her focus is on Knight Frank rentals across the Atlantic Seaboard, City Bowl and the Cape Town CBD. Corinne always listens intently to her clients before successfully matching individuals with properties that best suit their needs. Her passion and great eye for detail have contributed to her securing some noteworthy transactions in Knight Frank’s rental branch as well as several rewards. Corinne was awarded Rental Agent of the Year in 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2020. She also received her Ruby Knight Lifetime Achievement status in 2018 for Performance Excellence.

Which area in Cape Town is your favourite and why? I love the CBD. There are so many different facets to the city with old buildings and new, combined with modern mixed-use developments. It brings people from all walks of life together and truly makes me feel like it encompasses our rainbow nation.

How do you start your day? I almost always flop from my bed to the couch with a steaming cup of coffee to chat about the day ahead with my better half.

What motivates you at work? A positive office environment with like-minded people who are energetic definitely keeps me motivated. I really detest a quiet office space, so I love the fact that our office is always lively.

What is the best advice you were ever given? “Business is all about relationships, how well you build them determines how well they build your business.” This Brad Sugars quote was shared with me at the start of my property career. It is something that has been at the forefront of the way I run my day-to-day dealings with people. It’s great when people refer me to others and when past clients return. It makes me believe that I am successfully building lasting relationships which is imperative to my job.

What is one thing that has really surprised you about the real estate business? It surprises me that, after all of these years, people still enter the industry in the hope of finding something to just do part-time. It is such an ever-changing industry that demands sufficient time and commitment. This industry is not necessarily one you just enter in order to fill free time. Get in touch today! K

alk Bay, a suburb of greater Cape Town, is a fishing village on the coast of South Africa’s False Bay. Set between mountain and sea, it is loved by locals and visitors alike for its lovely holiday vibe. Perhaps the best way to experience Kalk Bay is on foot, walking along cobbled streets from one quirky shop to the next, stopping at awesome cafés and dining at popular restaurants along the way. Book shops, galleries and crafts in between make it all the more colourful. It is also worth pausing at the working harbour to buy fresh fish and watch opportunistic seals.

ART INVESTMENT WITH DIJONNE DU PREEZ

Dijonne Du Preez of Gallop Hill Gallery is Phulani Liebenberg’s Agent and the Exclusive Distributor of her art, worldwide.

P

hulani Liebenberg is a selftaught artist originating from the Eastern Cape. She expresses herself artistically through different mediums – whether it be drawing, painting or photography. She is drawn to the challenges of capturing the life and emotion of the subject’s eyes. “I love the process of breaking down the overall composition into the separate elements that harness human emotion, and how the smallest changes in each affect the mood and feeling in my work.”

to daily medical podcasts. In fact, if she was not an artist, she would have studied to become a physician nutrition specialist.

My art is an expression of my surroundings – from the people I meet, to the places I visit and the cultures and faces that interest me.

She sees each subject as a synergy of intense complex aspects that perfectly capture and preserve emotion, expression, concern and wonder. There is no particular part of her career she finds rewarding. The entire process excites her and her inspiration is evidently endless. “I love how Africa celebrates bright rich colours, and how beautifully they are used to represent and tell a story about a specific culture and a way of life. My paintings are my perspective of a beautiful continent and its people, the raw emotion that connects us all.” While Phulani loves working with her hands and being creative, she is also very passionate about fitness and health, specifically nutrition. She pursues this interest by doing research and listening

When asked about the pandemic and lockdown, Phulani opened up even more. Self-preservation keeps the crowd alive. – Adrian Nicholas Matthews Thaws (Tricky) “These words by Tricky, an amazing musician, have in many ways been the building blocks of my approach to life and the way I have chosen to see the world around me. Just like everyone else, the pandemic and national lockdown have had a huge impact on my life and career. The first five weeks started out with struggling to get canvasses and oil paints delivered, getting used to ordering groceries online and homeschooling. As lockdown was extended and stricter regulations introduced, logistics became a nightmare. Limited social interaction was starting to affect my daughter and suppliers were quickly running out of stock. So I decided to use the time to reflect, spend more time with my family and work on designs for future works. To my surprise, I started noticing an 75

unexpected surge in sales as well as a huge increase in social media feedback, followed by a steady demand for new work. Words cannot explain how inspired I was, yet humbled and grateful at the same time. It was during this time that I realised why I chose the path of an artist and now I finally have the answer to the question that everyone asks: ‘What makes you do it; what drives you to create?’ And the answer is simple: Because it would probably physically hurt if I didn’t.” UPCOMING EVENT Phulani Liebenberg Solo Exhibition – Not to Be Missed 24 April 2021 at Gallop Hill Gallery Franschhoek, Main Road Get in Touch with Dijonne Du Preez of Gallop Hill Gallery E: Dijonne@gallophill.co.za M: +27 (0)76 169 4547

ART INVESTMENT WITH DIJONNE DU PREEZ

INSIGHTS FROM THE WEALTH REPORT 2021 — 15TH EDITION By Andrew Shirley, Editor Covid-19 had a huge logistical impact on the global marketplace for luxury investments in 2020. Handbags topped the Knight Frank Luxury Investment Index Q4 2020* for the second year running. The art market, however, did not fare quite so well with the auction-tracking AMR All Art Index dropping 11% in 2020. But, points out AMR’s Sebastian Duthy, there was still plenty of enthusiasm from buyers. “With a new emphasis on home working, there was a surge in demand from collectors sprucing up their homes. By the second half of the year, a new kind of auction sale had emerged, catering to this need with eclectic showcases mixing art, antiques and collectibles.” While traditional collectors’ tastes have been driven by art history, newer collectors are just as likely to be turned on by what’s trending on social media, and this shift continued under lockdown, he adds. “Although the number of individual artist records halved last year compared with 2019, most of the winners were young artists, increasingly referred to as ‘Red Chip’.”

Clay Café EAT-PAINT-PLAY-REPEAT

78

CLAY CAFÉ

An outing the whole family can enjoy.

C

lay Café is a ceramic painting venue and restaurant that welcomes all ages, families, individuals and celebrations. Their flagship store, in the heart of Hout Bay, is a family-run business that has been operating since 1999. The premises is situated on a 2.5-acre farm surrounded by nature. With every table leading into their ever-changing garden/playground, visitors will find themselves in one of Cape Town’s most beautiful restaurants. Clay Café manufactures all their own items in-house and has a factory in Cape Town. Since they take current trends and styles into consideration, there is always something new and exciting to paint.

How it Works Upon arrival, one of their friendly hostesses will welcome you and take you to your table. Your allocated waiter will explain how the painting process works as well as the techniques. You then head to the bisque room where you choose the item(s) you want to paint, tools you want to use and pick your colours. You choose from already made stoneware bisque (raw pottery) to paint and decorate (you can view the online catalogue in advance). Most people enjoy the activity for 2 to 3 hours.

There are over 200 items to choose from including a variety of plates, mugs, bowls, vases, jugs and figurines. You then order food and drinks, sit back, relax and enjoy one of their farm-style food offerings. Once finished, you will receive a reference number linked to your details. This number is recorded on your items which are left with them to be fired and glazed. You will receive an email once your items are ready for collection in about 3 to 4 weeks. All items can be used as functional pieces of pottery in your everyday life.

Events, Kids and Adult Parties, Groups and Team Building Bookings are essential during school holidays, public holidays and weekends. You can book on the website or via email for groups of 10 or more. Painting packages and catering options are available for larger groups.

New Branch Clay Café in Cape Town’s Bree Street is a ceramic painting venue and tapas bar that welcomes all ages, but focuses on adult painting sessions in the evening.

Paint at Home Want to paint, but don’t want to leave the house? Head to their online store to look at the catalogue and choose items you want to paint, your tools and paints. Email your order and they will set it aside for you to collect. Once done you can drop it off again to be fired and glazed at a later stage.
