As part of Hyundai's plan to release 23 battery electric vehicles by the year 2025, it's introducing the all-new IONIQ 5 for the 2022 model year, an electric sport utility vehicle that delivers a driving range of over 300 miles.

The IONIQ 5's exciting design and fast-charging capabilities are meant to introduce the Hyundai brand to a new demographic of buyers. And let me tell you--it was love at first sight, and I'm ready to meet the all-new IONIQ 5!

Here's everything you need to know about Hyundai's flagship electric vehicle, the 2022 IONIQ 5.

For its introductory year, the 2022 IONIQ 5 is available in three models:

  • SE
  • SEL
  • Limited

And since the core of each IONIQ 5 is the same, you won't have to worry about missing out on key performance features--every model offers the same battery capacity and is available in front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. But as you step up in the model range, you'll gain access to more comfort and convenience capabilities.

On the SEL model, you'll find upgrades like full LED headlights, a hands-free smart liftgate, and wireless device charging, to name a few.

For the fully-loaded Limited model, you'll receive the most technology and premium amenities, including Remote Smart Parking Assist (it parks itself with you outside the vehicle!), a panoramic "Vision" roof, a heads-up display with augmented reality, and additional advanced driver assist features.

2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 Exterior

The IONIQ 5's visual styling is clearly one that's blazing its own trail, leaning into the design freedom offered by Hyundai's dedicated electric vehicle platform.

This futuristic look is further enhanced with an extended wheelbase - the longest in Hyundai's U.S. vehicle lineup - as well as flush automatic door handles, Parametric Pixel LED lighting elements, and large aero-optimized wheels.

The 2022 IONIQ 5 is available in six exterior paint colors, including five exclusive tones that draw inspiration from nature:

  • Phantom Black (Pearl)
  • Cyber Gray (Metallic)
  • Atlas White (Solid)
  • Digital Teal (Pearl)
  • Lucid Blue (Pearl)
  • Shooting Star (Matte)

Other exterior highlights include active grille shutters, a roof-mounted rear spoiler, power-folding side mirrors, and front LED accent lighting between the headlights and bumper.

2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 Interior

On the inside, you'll find a spacious cabin layout that takes full advantage of the IONIQ 5's unique form factor and elongated wheelbase.

Thanks to the vehicle's all-electric system and shift-by-wire design, the floor is nearly flat, which means the space that was previously reserved for a transmission tunnel can now be used for extra storage and more legroom.

Reclining seats in the Hyundai IONIQ 5

The IONIQ 5 makes really smart use of this space with its moveable center console. This "Universal Island" can slide back and forth 5.5 inches, which means that the driver can easily enter and exit the vehicle from either side when parked in a tight spot. The unique center console also houses cup holders for both passenger rows, a 15-watt wireless phone charger, and USB ports.

With your "analog" needs met in the form of comfortable seating, the IONIQ 5 turns its attention to the ultimate digital user experience featuring two 12-inch displays--one for infotainment, the other a customizable gauge cluster for the driver. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support is standard, as well as Bluetooth multi-connection capabilities (simultaneously connect two devices).

The 2022 IONIQ 5 is also the first Hyundai vehicle to offer a head-up display with augmented reality. This system effectively turns the windshield into a display screen, projecting navigation instructions, safety info, and details about the car's surroundings so you can keep your attention focused straight ahead.

One of the final highlights of the interior that's worth mentioning is that most of the IONIQ 5's touchpoints--seats, headliner, door trim, floor, and armrest--are covered in eco-friendly and sustainably sourced materials, like recycled bottles, plant-based yarns, and bio paint with plant extracts.

2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 Performance

Side view of the Hyundai IONIQ 5

The 2022 IONIQ 5 can be equipped with one of two drivetrain configurations. The first is a single motor, 225 horsepower rear-wheel drive system that offers an all-electric driving range of up to 303 miles.

The second optional configuration is a two-motor, 320 horsepower all-wheel drive setup with a total driving range of up to 256 miles. With the increased horsepower comes increased torque--446 lb-ft to be exact. This means the IONIQ 5 (AWD) can accelerate from zero to 62 mph in 5.2 seconds. All models have a top speed of 115 mph, and can tow a trailer with a capacity of up to 2,000 pounds.

Both single- and dual-motor configurations utilize the same single battery with a 77.4 kWh capacity, and features an ultra-fast charging capability (when connected to the appropriate power source) of as little as 18 minutes to go from 10% to 80% charge.

The IONIQ 5's built-in charging infrastructure can accommodate both 400-V and 800-V charging without the need for adapters--it's the world's first patented technology with this capability. If you're in a time crunch, the IONIQ 5 can gain approximately 68 miles of range in just 5 minutes when using a 350-kW fast charger. Standard Level 2 charging can fully replenish a battery in around 6 hours and 43 minutes.

And when you purchase an IONIQ 5, Hyundai will offer unlimited 30-minute charging sessions at all Electrify America locations for two years from your first day of ownership.

2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 Safety

The next level of Hyundai's SmartSense--a suite of advanced driver assistance technologies--comes standard on the 2022 IONIQ 5 to offer the best possible conditions for safety and convenience.

Most notably, IONIQ 5 is the first vehicle in Hyundai's lineup to include Highway Driving Assist 2, an active system that maintains a set distance from the vehicle ahead, and provides steering input to keep you centered through curves, or help change lanes when the turn signal is activated.

Other key highlights of SmartSense include Smart Cruise Control, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, Driver Attention Warning, High Beam Assist, and more.

But my favorite feature, by far, is Remote Smart Parking Assist. When a parking space is too tight, you can remotely park or exit a spot while waiting outside of the vehicle. Smart Parking works for both parallel and perpendicular parking, and is activated with the IONIQ 5's smart key.
