(WTNH) — One of the world’s biggest car makers will not be in for a name change any time soon.

The German carmaker came out Tuesday evening saying the reports it initially said were true, were, in fact, and pre-April Fool’s Day joke, according to the Associated Press.

Several reports this week said Volkswagen planned to drop the ‘k’ in its name and replace it with a ‘t’. That would change the name from ‘Volkswagen’ to ‘Voltswagen’, supposedly a nod to the company’s push into electric vehicles.

But Tuesday, AP reported, “Volkswagen of America issued false statements this week saying it would change its brand name to “Voltswagen,” as a way to stress its commitment to electric vehicles, only to reverse course Tuesday and admit that the supposed name change was just a joke.”

Mark Gillies, a company spokesman, confirmed to the AP Tuesday that “the statement had been a pre-April Fool’s Day joke, after having insisted Monday that the release was legitimate and the name change accurate.”
