The Family Cross has a little bit of everything: danger, humor, romantic tension, vengeance, and intrigue. Gabrielle Ash has done a wonderful job of crafting a tightly plotted, action-packed story with plenty of twists to keep you hooked until the end. The story was wonderfully creative, offering fresh takes on various paranormal creatures and phenomena through showing how they operate in a contemporary setting. I adored the originality! Matilda and Samson are both excellent characters, flawed but relatable, with interesting stories that are fully fleshed out to give them depth. The bad guys are both sinister and, at times, wickedly entertaining. Don't miss this compulsively readable tale of love and supernatural assassination plots in the fast-paced world of business!

The Family Cross is the first installment in an exciting new urban fantasy series. The story follows Matilda Ashby, daughter of a Manhattan billionaire, who has a penchant for expensive heels and about half the usual amount of spine. When she is unexpectedly attacked by a shapeshifting fae, her entire life changes as she is thrown into a supernatural world where someone working for her family business has paid for a hit on her.

I loved so many things about this book. The characters: Matilda is so very relatable - despite being a billionaire heiress - and grew so much over the course of the book. Samson is entirely unexpected in so many ways. I didn't see any of the twists coming! The plot is fast and dramatic and THE ENDING. I was surprised right until the end. The romantic storyline was one of the best I've read in a while. It was not at all predictable, and for at least half the book I could not see how these characters could possibly end up together but then when they did it made so much sense. An enthralling debut filled with unexpected twists and fast-paced action, intrigue, vengeance and the dark side of Manhattan, it kept me hooked until the very end.

Gabrielle Ash’s debut is a gripping and imaginative tale. Readers are thrust into the unexpected world of the paranormal along with Mathilda, an heiress and business woman with a price on her head. With nowhere else to go, she turns to the assistance of Samson, a rough-around-the-edges mercenary/assassin. Sparks fly between the unlikely pair in the best possible way as we get taken on a thrilling ride filled with intrigue, tender moments, and unexpected twists and turns. The Family Cross will captivate readers and have them screaming for more.

Re-read 5th Jan 2023

Since my memory is rubbish these days thought I’d best do a re-read before moving on to the next one. I enjoyed this just as much the second time so I’m sticking with my 4* rating.

Original review.

Matilda Ashby.
I was so glad a contract had been put on her life.
Harsh?
No stick with me on this.

Matilda Ashby is rich, she has a large Manhattan apartment, designer clothes a Mercedes she hardly drives. You get the picture.

But despite the privileged upbringing and all the money. She’s a genuinely nice person. She’s kind, thoughtful, works hard and bears no ill will to anyone.

The problem is she’s a people pleaser. Particularly with her father. She’s terrified of disappointing him. To the extent she’s dating a guy she doesn’t even like to please him. Her life revolves around work and anything her father wants her to do.

So despite all the trappings of wealth I felt sorry for her. The contract changed all that. It brought colour, Samson and yes the threat of death into her life. It also opened up a whole new world she thought only existed in books.

So her plain dull life suddenly became exciting. With Samson at her side they have to figure out who wants her dead. The race to stay alive is on….

I throughly enjoyed this book. It took me a little while to settle into it but once I had I was hooked. It also kept me guessing and re-guessing right until the end.

It also had one (for me anyway) laugh out loud moment.

“Having a rough time, rich girl?”

“She prefers Fancy Pants,” Samson unhelpfully corrected.

I don’t know why but my drink flew out of my mouth and across the room at that.

Now I’m just waiting for the next book.

I voluntarily read a review copy kindly provided by NetGalley.

Such a great urban fantasy! Loved the writing and being in Matilda’s head more than I could ever have imagined (this is single POV). For a financially spoiled heiress FMC, I found Matilda Ashby quite likable. She’s got expensive taste, yes, but she’s otherwise down to earth, thoughtful, kind, and considerate. When her world is turned upside down by supernatural hitmen, she’s utterly terrified, yes, but she takes it in stride. She learns, she adapts, and for a self-acknowledged doormat, seeing her grow a spine over the course of the novel, overcoming her fears, and learning to fight for herself, was extremely gratifying.

For much of the book, Samson’s grating personality made me wonder if they’d get together, but the tender moments between them were very sweet, and I wish we could have lingered in them much longer. I personally love strong romantic tension/sweet longing. Some examples of scenes I did not want to end: her tending to him while he’s vulnerable, the one-bed-one-shirt scene, her cutting his hair. Towards the end, when Samson pauses to ground and center a panicking Matilda in the stairwell *chef’s kiss*.

Slow, slow burn romance. With the potential for more set up at the end. Can’t wait to see what chemistry Matilda and Samson have in Book 2, especially given the significance of simple physical touch in their relationship ;)

On my seventh birthday, my father said I was a girl worth killing for.

From this first line I knew I was in for a treat. This book was just a delightful read from start to finish. If you enjoy urban fantasy or paranormal romance with:

* grumpy secret cinnamon roll heroes
* funny, relatable first person heroines
* dysfunctional family drama
* literally saving the cat
* supernatural creatures hiding in plain sight
* terrible rich men getting what they deserve
* bodyguard romance
* a splash of fake dating
* slow burn relationships

...then this book is for you.

When I first picked this up, I wasn't sure I would like the heroine, Matilda, given that she is a rich girl who is a bit spoiled and sheltered. However, she is just so likeable, kind, and unpretentious--and her super-rich family is so obviously messed up--that I had no problems relating to her. (In fact, thanks to her terrible family, Matilda doesn't give herself enough credit for her abilities and competence through much of the book.) Her sense of humor and strong voice really made this read for me. There were numerous points in the book that made me laugh out loud despite the fast paced tension, creepy bad guys, and scary action scenes.

Then there's the hero/love interest. Samson is grumpy, no-nonsense, and from a different world than Matilda in so many ways. He has had a rough life and is no stranger to killing and violence. And yet, despite all that, I fell for him right along with Matilda. He's a great foil for the sweet but naive heiress. I loved the way the bond grew between these two.

The supernatural and fae world that lies hidden behind the mundane world in this book is fascinating, although we mostly just get glimpses of the way supernatural powers work. The monsters are incredibly creepy--the way they are introduced sent chills up my spine.

I devoured this novel in two days and I'm still thinking about it. My one complaint is I want the next book NOW and I have to wait until November for it!

Title: The Family Cross
Author: Gabrielle Ash
Publication date: July 6th, 2021
Series: Circle Seven (#1)

Summary: Matilda Ashby has a pair of Ivy League degrees and a dream of unseating her brother as their billionaire father’s favorite. But just as she inches close to her goal, Matilda’s world is rocked by monsters roaming the Manhattan streets, and the elusive enemy at her father’s corporation who hired them to kill her.

With assassins on the heels of her Manalos, and the family business’s reputation in danger of being destroyed, Matilda hires the mysterious Samson, a telepath with a shady past, to help her find out who wants her dead.

But when the would-be assassins can take the form of anyone in her life, Matilda doesn’t know who she should fear most—the monsters hiding inside her family business or the ones coming for her head.

Review: Books beginning was a bit slow but I'm so happy I kept going. It was definitely worth the read. I love when people put different creatures into the story. There are a few variations of classic creatures. Like the fae smell horrible and they can shape shift. It makes the story that much more interesting. I absolutely cannot wait to see what happens with the rest of the series. I highly recommend for all my paranormal lovers out there. This book is dangerous and the twists are so unexpected.

What a thrilling ride! I loved this urban fantasy set in upper class NYC. Take a wealthy family (like… Logan Huntsburger wealthy) and throw them into a world like Supernatural with some murder on the side and you have The Family Cross.

I loved Matilda having to grapple with her own privilege and growing into her own while navigating a dangerous supernatural world where she’s on the run for her life. She gets her own backbone and stands on her own two feet, but unapologetically stays who she is. (And in a fabulous pair of heels.) Samson was a strong brooding hero with his own secrets and disturbing past. If you’re a fan of characters like Dean Winchester, then you’ll love Samson!

It has a super slooooooow burn romance, which I honestly found refreshing. As much as I like steamy books, I also love watching characters take their time and let it happen slowly. I almost wondered if anything would happen at all, but only makes it even more worth it.

Sooooo when’s the next one coming out?

The Family Cross is easily one of my favorite reads of the year! I devoured it in one sitting because I HAD TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED! Ash's debut hooks readers from the first page and keeps them on their toes throughout. This novel is filled with an incredibly unique plot that will make it hard to put the book down because you're dying to find out what happens next, brilliantly captivating writing, and characters that are so easy to root for. I loved Matilda and Samson and their romantic storyline is one of the best ones I've ever read. They are such complete opposites but are actually perfect for each other--their sweet moments are everything.
I am eagerly awaiting book 2 and Gabrielle Ash has just cemented herself as a one-click author for me. This one goes on my favorites shelf.

I thought this book sounded interesting, so I thought I’d give it a try. I had never read this author before, but I definitely will again. I was immediately drawn into the story almost from the beginning even if I really wanted to shake the main character Mathilda because she was so much a doormat. It wasn’t long after the story kicked in and we met Samson that I knew her life was going to change. I didn’t really know who the villains were in the story even though I did figure out one thing before we were told. This was a character-driven story full of great writing and an interesting plot, and I’m really looking forward to what happens next. Highly recommend I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

THE FAMILY CROSS is an excellent paranormal adventure. Though the setting is in the real world, I loved the world building that Ash put in to create a criminal underworld of supernatural entities. The monsters were delightfully dark, and the fight scenes were gripping and exciting.

Matilda Ashby is a believable heroine who grows in a wonderfully-crafted arc when she's propelled quite suddenly into the world of the paranormal. Samson, her guide in said world, is flawed from the beginning, and it was a joy to read his progression toward healing from past trauma. They make a great team, and I felt a true bond with them throughout the book. I'm so glad that Circle Seven will be a series because I want more!

An adult fantasy mixed with a dose of romance. This is a such a gentle initiation for a scaredy cat like me.

Matilda is exactly what Samson calls her - Fancy pants. She rolls in money, manolos and Mercedes but inside is a nice heart dealing with her own demons. So when the real demon has a killing contract on her she must hire Samson the telepath who is inclined to save her. and probably the only one who can.

It's told in Matilda's pov, is gentle on explicit violence and gore which is exactly what I needed and has a mix of everything! Drama, mystery, fantasy and romance. I so love samson and I want more of him!

Thanks so much @GabrielleAsh4 !! Love it!

This is book 1 in the Circle Seven series and it is also my very first book by Author Gabrielle Ash. Let me tell you that this will definitely not be my last book by this author. As a matter of fact, as soon as I finished this book, I purchased a physical copy.....It was that good.

I am a huge fan of urban fantasy series and this falls in line to exactly what I love in a great book. This story follows Matilda or Tilly to her friends and family. She is the daughter of a corporate mogul with a huge company and sister to two brothers. Tilly has never felt loved...just used, especially by her family. She is a loner who is just a kind soul and would help anyone with anything within her power. On a warm morning, Tilly is doing what she normally does before work and grabs a coffee. While purchasing hers, she pays it forward and buys the customer behind her, his order. Tuns out he's not just another customer but someone who is going to change her world and become so much more.......

Okay.....let me start by starting off this review with the fact that I absolutely devoured this book and it is now a favorite. This book doesn't have a lot of spice but the slow burn is oh so sweet. I loved each and every character in this book. From the good guys, Tilly, and Samson to the bad guys...Rolf, Tilly's Father (not bad, just a jerk) and more. Each character was written with such depth and emption that you could feel the fear and despair, longing and need and the overall feelings that each character portrayed. The emotions that I felt while reading were at times overwhelming...but that is not a bad thing. It is a testament to how good of an author Gabrielle is. I fell in love with this world and all that it contains. I am even having a difficult times explaining how much I LOVED THIS BOOK. Samson is my favorite character in this series....his back story broke me, I literally was crying at the end of this book, and right now I am still thinking about his history as I write this. Once done, I immediately started book 2. Gabrielle Ash is an author that deserves more exposure. Her writing is phenomenal and she has a new fan and auto buyer for sure. This book gets 5 stars but if I could give it more, i would.

The Family Cross is a contemporary romance, magical realism novel set among the wealthy in Manhattan. New York City is filled with its secrets, demons and other beings who inhabit the spaces where the average human would not know to look. One family in particular, the Ashbys, known for their fortune due their namesake's corporation, is the center of the this story. The author, Gabrielle Ash writes this modern tale with smooth transition most of the time, subtle humour, and a lot of action. What she is able to accomplish, aside from this, is to integrate the heartfelt emotions that any family would have due to the nature of their relationship and as a result of the plot. There is the need to fulfill the wishes of others due to the weighty responsibility of likely inheriting the corporation, the patriarchal discipline which overshadows his offsprings' need for love and attention, and the natural competition among employed relatives as well as others to outperform one another in their job duties. The reader will easily encounter moments in which he or she will unexpectedly laugh, especially when the main character is in the midst of supernatural or nonhuman beings. The protagonist seems to respond sometimes in this manner as a self-defense/coping mechanism, as any other normal person would when faced with demons or fairies.

Matilda Ashby, businesswoman and heiress, is suddenly thrust into a world full of supernatural creatures she didn’t know existed all thanks to the bounty placed on her head. Unsure of what else to do, she seeks out the help of the mysterious and broody Samson, who has saved her life more than once already.

Tilly learns that Samson isn’t just human, but has gifts of his own that can help her track down the person wanting her dead. The two form a plan to root her would be murderer out, while navigating their budding friendship and the growing chemistry between the two of them, all while trying to keep Tilly alive.

Will Tilly and Sam be able to find out who is behind wanting her dead, or will Tilly just become another casualty?

I went into The Family Cross not knowing what to expect and was pleasantly surprised. Gabrielle Ash gave us an action packed story full of unexpected twists, danger, suspense, and some romantic intrigue between the two main characters. I honestly just really enjoyed this and hope to see more of Tilly and Samson.

I'm blown away by Gabrielle Ash's debut book & I'm so very glad she decided to become an author. The Family Cross was highly original, super exciting, and very addictive in the telling. Matilda is a hardworking heiress with a shoe obsession who is just trying to become her billionaire father's favorite when life takes a very crazy supernatural turn as a magical creature tries to kill her. Apparently someone in her life has put a hit out on her, and the assassins are not of this world so what's a girl to do?! Well, she hires Samson to help keep her safe but the sparks are flying like crazy between them despite the fact that they're so totally opposite. They start out on this action packed journey that has the twists coming in hot, insane mystery trying to figure out who is human and who could be some shapeshifter close to her, and maybe just maybe some feelings developing before it's all said & done. This story absolutely kept my full attention so I devoured it in short order than was willing to beg for more! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

This is the first book I've read by Gabrielle Ash and I enjoyed her writing.  This book is a paranormal suspense in genre.  Given paranormal is one of my favorites to read I thought I'd give this one a go.

It does not disappoint!  The book focuses on Matilda "Tilly" the only girl of three but not at the top of the child food chain enough to inherit her father's successful empire.  One conversation at a coffee store changes her whole life though.  What a ride it is afterwards too...trying to stay alive is a must!

It might be stereotypical to say that children of the wealthy have to stay one step ahead to stay on top just to inherit...but there are some instances where there are kids that don't want to have anything to do with their parents empire. But if you're too busy trying to stay in good graces do you really know what your other siblings really want?

Matilda has some shocking revelations coming to her in The Family Cross.  It's quite an interesting story.  I thought it was fun to read and enjoyed the banter of the characters.  I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.  Now that Matilda knows there are beings that are "extra" it will be interesting to see what happens next.

Action-Packed Adventure . . .

Matilda Ashby wants to take over the helm at their family business, but she gets a quick education in the existence of supernaturals when suddenly assassins are coming at her due to a bounty placed on her head by someone.

Tilly seeks out Samson who is a telepath who might be able to discover who wants her dead. But will they run out of time? With enemies coming at her on the streets and from within the business itself, she doesn’t know where to turn next.

The story is fast-paced and filled with twists and turns the reader won’t see coming. This quickly becomes a game of survival and fortunately Samson seems willing to stay with her and does what he can to help. Will they survive this onslaught? Will their friendship deepen through this crazy experience?

Now that I’ve finished the book, I can see so many different layers of meaning in the title alone. There’s a lot going on in this story, and it’s a bit like walking through a house of mirrors; nothing, and no one, are quite what they appear to be. Matilda and Samson immediately captured my attention. I anxiously followed along as they raced against the clock to get to the bottom of the plot against her. And I fell in love with them as they opened up and revealed their secrets to one another. And hiding at the middle of all this is the mysterious Circle Seven. An organization I’m desperate to learn more about. I can’t wait for more books in the series to be released.

Paranormal Urban Fantasy? Why yes, please! This book ended up being a delicious multi-faceted ride into the world of Matilda (what a great name) as her reality fractures, and she's running for her life. When this kind-hearted accountant kinds herself pursued by monsters who want her dead, and she doesn't understand why. We meet the mysterious Samson, who is psychic and decides to protect Matilda because he knows she's as kind as she appears.

Their story is exciting and pulls you into their world as private corporations, family jealousies, and an invisible world comes to light. I only have more questions now, and I cannot wait for the next installment.

This book is a supernatural mystery that keeps you on your toes with it's twists and turns. Matilda is an heiress with no backbone who finds out in the most horrible way that there is a hit out on her. Even worse, it's not just any hit but one made to be fulfilled by supernatural killers! (Dramatic gasp)!! BUT, her savior is the very unlikely Samson, who is a former mercenary with telepathy. Samson keeps her alive for the same amount of money the hit on Matilda's head is for, which, I think it's an interesting concept. I really enjoyed this story and am looking forward to the next in the series.

Didn't expect to fly through this like I did! Very fun urban fantasy story (well, not fun for our heroine, but I enjoyed it.) I was pretty ready not to like Matilda (spoiled rich girl who is genuinely SO nice it makes your teeth hurt...no thanks) but she really grew on me and it was fun watching her develop and gain her inevitable backbone. I did notice a lot of repetition in the writing that took me out of the story (like every time a door opened the reader had to be told that hot or cold air blew in, and also each chapter Matilda reminded us that someone wanted to kill her) but that started to fall off in the last half, or else I stopped noticing when stuff got good! :)

The Family Cross is first book in new urban fantasy series Circle Seven. Story follows Matilda Ashby, daughter of billionaire, who found herself with a price on her head.
I wasn't sure what to expect so I was little afraid. But it was unnecessary. Yes, the start was little slower than I am used to but I understand why. And when we get through the beggining, it really was ride. Tilly and her bodyguard Samson are great characters and I enjoyed their grow up.
So if you like supernatural creatures, badass assassins and some romance, this is your book. And honesty? I'm really curious where this story will go.

can I just say I thought my family had problems. wow. I enjoyed this read because it was not a one genre wonder. There was urban fantasy, which is what it is sure, but also intrigue, tension on so many fronts (romance, family, etc) action, and an MC with a slight shoe obsessions (I can relate). The author's take on the supernaturals was interesting as well. A good choice for a read.

Loved this book! Couldn't put it down. It has the fast, wonderful pacing of the best thrillers mixed with the coolest parahuman monsters. I was hooked from the first sentence. This is the type of fantasy read that will appeal to fans of all genres: there is action, romance, a touch of magic, and a whole lot of heart. I can't wait for the next installment. Highly recommend!
