HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - Carson Paetow’s grand slam in the seventh inning Sunday capped a weekend baseball sweep of Rice University and allowed the sixth-ranked University of Southern Mississippi to tie the program’s longest winning streak.

Paetow’s big blow at Pet Taylor Park capped a seven-run inning and gave USM (32-8, 16-2 Conference USA) a 12-2 victory over the Owls (11-29, 4-14) in seven innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

The win was USM’s 14th in a row, tying a winning streak from 2017 when the Golden Eagles won the final 14 games of the regular season.

Sunday’s outcome also gave USM a three-game conference sweep for a third consecutive weekend and pulled Coach Scott Berry within a victory of tying former Golden Eagles coach Hill Denson’s 468 career wins.

Sunday starter Hurston Waldrep (4-1) allowed two runs on five hits over seven innings. He struck out 12 and walked three.
