WHO Global Health Emergency Appeal 2022 regional summary: African region

Overview

The WHO African Region faces the highest burden of public health emergencies globally. In many cases, such emergencies are preventable or controllable with proven public health interventions but, without essential support, they will continue to cost lives, overwhelm health systems and fuel socioeconomic disruption. Throughout 2021, WHO worked closely with countries and partners to prevent, detect, and respond to the Region’s wide range of emergencies, with a dual focus on meeting the immediate health needs of crisis-affected populations and addressing the underlying causes of their vulnerability. These actions provided people with access to lifesaving care, controlled the spread of disease, and mitigated economic hardship.
