Original show description below.

Two of the most exciting bands in modern jazz share this cutting edge double bill.

Drummer and composer Nate Smith is among the most influential rhythm masters of his generation, known for his inimitable groove work with Pat Metheny, Chris Potter, Dave Holland, José James, and Ravi Coltrane. He makes his debut appearance as a leader with his double GRAMMY-nominated KINFOLK project, in support of his latest Edition Records album, Kinfolk 2: See The Birds. Bridging Smith’s influences and experience as a jazz artist and his early experiences with R&B and progressive rock, Kinfolk 2 showcases the drummer’s masterful band that includes saxophone great Jaleel Shaw and Brian Blade Fellowship keyboardist Jon Cowherd.

25-year-old alto saxophonist and composer Immanuel Wilkins has become one of the vital voices of jazz, bringing music from his sophomore Blue Note recording The 7th Hand. The Pennsylvania native’s studies at the Juilliard School led to his connection to mentors who helped establish his professional career — Oakland-born trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire and pianist Jason Moran. Since then, Wilkins has worked with a range of artists including Wynton Marsalis, Joel Ross, Solange, and Gerald Clayton. His Blue Note debut, Omega, took the #1 spot on The New York Times’ list of Best Jazz Albums of 2020.

Two of the cutting-edge bands in modern jazz share this double bill. Drummer Smith debuts with his GRAMMY-nominated project, and saxophonist Wilkins returns with music from his album The 7th Hand.

The New York Times: Review of Immanuel Wilkins' album The 7th Hand

His drumming is a marvel unto itself. Humid and broad of palette, it has the rare ability to dial up the complexity and the sensitivity at the same time
