Squirrels chew through Christmas lights, ruin holiday display in Minnesota

Holiday organizers in St. Paul, Minn., are fed up with spoiled squirrels chewing through holiday lights, so locals will have to make do with a base light shining green and blue lighting onto trees.

Friends of Mears Park co-chair Ann LaBore says locals who are unhappy about this year’s display can blame the “tree rats” that Mears Park visitors insist on feeding.

“People look down from their condos or apartments and they want to see the twinkly lights,” she said. “Well, we can’t have twinkly lights.”

The wires that carry electricity to the park’s lights last year were coated in polylactic acid, which is derived from corn sugar, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. According to LaBore, the squirrels that chewed through the wiring had become spoiled by people who insist on feeding the animals in the park.

Vendors decided against buying new lights this year after seeing the damage the squirrels did in 2020. There have reportedly been complaints that this year’s holiday display — which also include a projector to replicate snowflakes — just isn’t the same.
