Professor Kevin Davies has been re-appointed as medical director of ACCIA for 3 years from 1 July 2023.

The appointment will involve a time commitment of 2 days a week. Remuneration for the role will be at a rate of £52,540 a year.

Committee on Mutagenicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment (COM) - members

Dr Carol Beevers and Dr Andrew Povey have been re-appointed as members of the Committee on Mutagenicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment (COM) - Dr Beevers for 3 years from 1 January 2022 and Dr Povey for 3 years from 1 January 2023.

These appointments will involve a time commitment of around 3 days or meetings a year. The roles are not remunerated.

Healthwatch England (HWE) - interim chair

The appointment of Belinda Black as interim chair of the Healthwatch England (HWE) Committee has been extended from 1 February 2023 until 31 March 2023, or until a new chair is appointed, whichever is sooner.

The time commitment for the role of interim HWE chair will continue to be approximately one day per week. Remuneration for the combined roles of interim HWE chair and Care Quality Commission non-executive member will continue to be £15,000 per year.

Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) - members

Caroline Trotter, Paul Heath and Chris Hughes have been appointed as members of the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) from 1 December 2022 for 3 years. The role will involve a time commitment of 6 to 8 days per year.

There is no remuneration for these posts. However, expenses will be paid in line with Department of Health and Social Care policy.

Health Services Safety Investigations Body (HSSIB) - chair

Following a pre-appointment hearing, Ted Baker has been appointed as chair of the Health Services Safety Investigations Body (HSSIB), once it is established in 2023, for a term of 3 years. The expected start date for the role is 1 April 2023. Before this, Ted has taken the role of chair designate of HSSIB from 1 December 2022 until HSSIB is established.

The role will involve a time commitment of 2 to 3 days per week. Remuneration for the role will be at a rate of £63,000 per year.

Healthwatch England (HWE) - interim chair

Following Sir Robert Francis standing down as chair of Healthwatch England (HWE) and a non-executive member of the Care Quality Commission (CQC) on 17 November, Belinda Black, a serving CQC non-executive member, has been appointed as interim chair of the HWE Committee from 18 November 2022 until 31 January 2023, or until a new chair is appointed, whichever is sooner.

Professor Sir Norman Williams, Anthony Schapira and Miles Wagstaff have been re-appointed to the Independent Reconfiguration Panel. Professor Sir Norman as chair for 3 years from 1 October 2023 and Anthony Schapira and Miles Wagstaff as members for 3 years from 1 October 2022.

The chair appointment will continue to involve a time commitment of up to 2 days per week and remuneration will be £36,780 per annum. The member roles will continue to involve a time commitment of up to 2 days per month and will be remunerated at a rate of £300 per day.

The appointments of Elaine Strachan-Hall, Tansi Harper and Graham Jagger as members of the Independent Reconfiguration Panel have also been extended from 1 October 2022 to 30 September 2023.

These roles will continue to involve a time commitment of 1 to 2 days per month, and remuneration at £300 per day.

Health Services Safety Investigations Body - chair

Ted Baker has been named as the government’s preferred candidate for chair of the Health Services Safety Investigations Body.

Steve Barclay, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, has today (26 August 2022) invited the Health and Social Care Committee to hold a pre-appointment scrutiny hearing with Dr Baker.

Ted Baker was Chief Inspector of Hospitals at the Care Quality Commission between 2017 and 2022. He trained as a paediatric cardiologist. He was in clinical practice for 35 years and has held a range of clinical and academic leadership roles including medical director at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

He was selected following an open public appointment process.

Following the select committee hearing, the committee will set out its views on the candidate’s suitability for the role. The Secretary of State will then consider the committee’s report before making a final decision on the appointment.

NHS Resolution - chair

Sally Cheshire CBE has been appointed as chair of NHS Resolution for 3 years from 19 September 2022.

The appointment will involve a time commitment of 2 to 3 days per week. Remuneration for the role is £63,000 per year.

Professor John Latham has been reappointed as a non-executive director and Audit and Risk Committee Chair for 12 months, or until the disestablishment date for HEE, from 1 November 2022.

Preferred candidate for Patient Safety Commissioner

Henrietta Hughes has been named as the government’s preferred candidate for the role of Patient Safety Commissioner.

Sajid Javid, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, has today, 20 June 2022, invited the Health and Social Care Committee to hold a pre-appointment scrutiny hearing with Henrietta.

Henrietta is a practising GP with a background in women’s health who was the National Guardian for the NHS until 2021. In addition to her clinical work, she is an appraiser for NHS England and Chair of Childhood First.

She was selected following an open public appointment process to appoint the first Patient Safety Commissioner.

Following the select committee hearing, the committee will set out its views on the candidate’s suitability for the role. The Secretary of State will then consider the committee’s report before making a final decision on the appointment.

The appointments will involve a time commitment of 3 meetings per year. Remuneration for the roles will be at a rate of £325 per meeting.

These appointments are made in accordance with the Cabinet Office Code of Governance for Public Appointments. The regulation of public appointments against the requirements of this code is carried out by the Commissioner for Public Appointments.

The appointments are made on merit and political activity played no part in the decision process. However, in accordance with the code, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if any declared) to be made public. None of the appointees have declared any political activity.
