The former home of Forrer Business Interiors Inc. is to be converted into a facility for processing juice and other foods.

Two separate proposals to redevelop vacant retail and light industrial buildings into new uses are pending in Glendale.

The former Pier 1 Imports store, 6010 N. Port Washington Road, would be converted into a medical office building, according to a proposal filed with the Glendale Plan Commission.

Also, the former home of Forrer Business Interiors Inc., 555 W. Estabrook Parkway, would be renovated into a facility for making and distributing fresh juices and other foods.

Both proposals are to undergo initial Plan Commission appearances at its Tuesday night meeting.

The Pier 1 proposal is from Illume Cosmetic Surgery & MedSpa, which would be operated by Plastic Surgery Associates SC.

The 10,744-square-foot space would undergo façade changes, which need commission approval.

Its new use as a cosmetic surgery medical office and surgical suite also needs approval.

Illume Cosmetic Surgery & Medspa is presently located at 5201 N. Port Washington Road. The renovations would be completed in 2021, according to the proposal.

Pier 1, a national retail chain specializing in home furnishings, home goods and imported furniture, disclosed in February it was closing its Germantown and Glendale stores.

Meanwhile, produce wholesaler Maglio Cos. wants to convert the former Forrer Business Interiors office furniture showroom and warehouse into a refrigerated food production and distribution facility for juice and other products.

Maglio has operated a produce distribution center and office since 1997 nearby at 4287 N. Port Washington Road.

The company would move its offices to the former Forrer building.

It also would convert much of the 77,950-square-foot facility into space where fresh fruits and vegetables can be sliced, diced, pressed, mixed and blended, the proposal said.

Demand for those products has risen faster than expected in 2020, it said. Maglio will continue to operate its North Port Washington Road facility.

Plan Commission approval is needed to rezone the Estabrook Parkway property.

Forrer closed its operations in August 2019.
