The Executive Committee of the ICC welcome all competitors to the final of the 31st Sporting Press Online Edition Irish Oaks competition, and as sponsors we are thrilled with the event to date. The Sporting Press newspaper, as part of the Irish Coursing Club, is proud to be associated with this female classic and Shelbourne Park for the last 31 years. This year’s event coincides with first year anniversary of the Sporting Press online edition which is available every Tuesday evening at 8pm. This year, we are delighted to see that the crowds are back to witness the best of the best compete before their very eyes and it is a welcome change from the last two years due to Covid-19. Thankfully, greyhound racing has continued throughout the various levels and this is due to the stringent GRI protocols in place and the compliance of all greyhound participants. Once again, we have seen the best of the crop entered in the event with fine performances from the best bitches in training from the four provinces. The two semi-final winning performances were bearing down on the 28 second barrier, so we can expect a thrilling final, with four of the six handled by trainers and the remaining two handled by their owners. This competition is dedicated to the female sector and is a strong indicator of how well placed our breeding future is with such a line-up of talent. Thanks to all stud dog owners that are operating in equally challenging times but continue to serve our industry so well. A major thank you to Declan O’Donoghue, who did a wonderful job in keeping everyone informed and enthralled with his weekly reports. We also thank Ian Fortune and Tommy Lyons of ‘Talking Oaks’, together with the various contributing panellists: Declan O’Donoghue, Frank Kieran, Jason Craddock and Barry Caul. We thank Orla Strumble, Dawn Quinn, Thomas Ryan of GRI for their support and professionalism during the event and their social media content over the last number of weeks. Another big thank you to Imelda Grauer our long serving photographer together with Adolf, for capturing those special moments and no doubt any one of tonight’s finalists would like to be facing the camera one more time. The ICC supports this event annually because the Executive recognise that the foundation of the breeding industry is dependent on the quality of the brood bitch and this makes it necessary to acknowledge the very important role played by the breeder to ensure a vibrant breeding industry. Finally, we wish Dearbhla O’Brien well in her role as CEO of GRI. A sincere thanks to Michael Dempsey and all the team at Shelbourne Park for making this another memorable Sporting Press Online Edition Oaks competition. Wishing each finalist, the best of luck in running tonight and let’s hope we can enjoy their off-spring representing them well into the future. D.J. Histon, Chief Executive/Secretary

Looking back at 10 and 20 years ago 2012 Oaks tallied up nicely for Milldean by Anne Marie O’Brien

After landing the Puppy Oaks in a slick 28.43, Borna Gem stood out in the first-round draw for the Sporting Press Irish Oaks of 2012, bidding to land a third Oaks title for Ruairi Dwan. She was pitted against College Maybe; and also in that first-round line-up were the likes of Tyrur Monica, Limerick Oaks winner Tyra Cool, leading sprinter Bulmers Baby Cork Oaks winner Smoke Pixie, and Cabra Millie. Millie recorded 28.55 in the first round, with Milldean Tally, trained by John O’Flynn Jnr, going fastest of the opening heats in 28.42. Tally stayed unbeaten in the second round, clocking 28.77, with Borna Gem doing 28.70, and College Maybe 28.53. Also unbeaten was Tantallons Kay, who did a fast 28.53 in the first round. Milldean was on a five-timer going into the semi-finals, winning her quarter-final in 28.58 despite an early bump; while Cabra Millie did a super 28.34. 7/4 favourite for the final was Milldean Tally, with her litter sister Tantallons Kay 8/1 for popular Dublin handler Domnick Rennicks, who has since sadly passed away. Cabra Millie was 9/4 second favourite Milldean Tally in trap one squeezes up the inside for Graham Holland, who was double-handed with Rockburst in a race to the first bend in the 2012 Oaks Final. Delta. Completing the line-up were Millbank Lola and Solo Star. But the crown belonged to Milldean Tally (Head Bound – Talita Beauty), who won the 2012 Oaks unbeaten for owners Tony O’Connell and Clive Francis.

Lifes Beauty-ful in 2002 All the talk in advance of the 2002 Sporting Press Irish Oaks was about Marinas Tina, bidding for a historic hat-trick after winning in 2000 and 2001, though she had recently injured a tendon. 96 bitches lined out for the first round in 2002, with Marinas sadly exiting the classic in the first round. Paul Hennessy’s Tamna Rose was fastest of all in 28.69, and he also won heats with Baby Bee and Longvalley Tina. Hey Good Lookin was quickest in the second round in 28.84, while Lifes Beauty did 28.94 and won again in the third round for trainer Nick Turner and owner Larry Byrne, in 29.00. Axle Grease, perfectly drawn in trap one, went off favourite for the 2002 final, but Lifes Beauty belied her odds of 6/1 to win from trap to line, and connections adjourned home to Co. Wexford where they brought the bitch to their local pub and re-watched the final many times while ‘We Are The Champions’ played, rounding it all off with a barbecue at the kennels until 8am on the Sunday morning!

Jason Craddock previews the 2022 SportingPress ONLINE IRISH OAKS FINAL Jennifer’s Duchess drawn to deliver

Gift Voucher THE draw points to Scooby Duchess to land the final of the 2022 Sporting Press Online Edition Irish Oaks over 525 yards. Jennifer O’Donnell’s bitch, who ran a blinder in defeat last week from a midfield draw, is perfectly drawn on the fence in this prestigious decider and can follow in the footsteps of last year’s champion Susie Sapphire as a red-jacketed winner. Scooby Duchess won the ‘November’ Puppy Oaks last year at Shelbourne and came into season just over 14 weeks ago while being prepared for the Kirby Memorial at Limerick in the spring. The Droopys Sydney bitch has been brought back quickly, and will have needed the four preliminary races she’s had in this event to bring her to peak fitness. She has broken 28.30sec twice in the event and last week after a moderate break and trouble, did a lot of running to get to the front off the last turn before being passed by Droopys Nextone. Anything like a decent start from a perfect fence-side draw can see her establish a racewinning lead. A win for the kennel would mean that Jennifer would follow in the footsteps of both her father, Matt, and mother, Frances, as an Oaks-winning trainer after the victories of Yale Princess and Skywalker Queen. The up-and-coming Raha Mofo, the youngest in the final, looks a huge threat. Murt Leahy’s bitch keeps on surprising people after rising from the ranks of A5 just five weeks ago. In the second round she recorded a slick 28.15sec, which was the fastest of the round and in the quarter-finals she was only beaten two and a half lengths by an out-and-gone 28.07sec winner Droopys Nextone. Last week she was at it again, showing more early speed than before when making all in 28.16sec off a slick 2.08sec sectional. If she was to turn near the front at the bend, she will take some holding. Droopys Nextone is a bitch that has hit form at the right time. John Linehan’s runner clocked the fastest time of the quarter-finals when making all in 28.07sec and last week came from off the pace to catch Scooby Duchess and clock 28.18sec. The Ballymac Eske bitch has not won from a wider trap than three and finds herself drawn in trap five. She needs to tread carefully to the turn, but if getting a clear run will not be far away. Ballymac Art reaches her second Oaks final after making the decider in 2020. Liam Dowling’s bitch has been a pillar of consistency in this event as all her times have been within a length of each other. She is capable of going to the bend with most greyhounds and was only beaten two and a half lengths by Droopys Nextone last week after attempting to pinch the race from the start. Ballymac Miranda will go off as one of the outsiders as she has yet to get off the mark in this event so far. Kieran Lynch’s bitch’s best performance came in round two when she narrowly failed to catch Scooby Duchess in 28.28sec and she has found the trouble spots since. A career-best effort is needed from a poor draw in four to trouble the judge. Tullovin Vita is the other finalist who has yet to get her head in front in the event so far. James Wade’s bitch is the second youngest in the decider and has a great draw as the sole wide seed. She is capable of a flash start and could run a big race if the railers come together. 1 Scooby Duchess 15/8 2 Ballymac Art 13/2 3 Raha Mofo 5/2 4 Ballymac Miranda 20 5 Droopys Nextone 11/4 6 Tullovin Vita 25

FINAL DRAW

1 2 3 4 5 6

Quickly established herself as one of Ireland’s best young bitches when reaching the Munster Oaks decider, finishing third, in just her fifth career start. Has next assignment was the Puppy Oaks around Owners: Breeder: here and she duly went unbeaten through the stake, making all to win the final. She returned from seasonal break to take in the Oaks and Trainer: has shown signs of a return to her very best. A deserving favourite from an ideal draw in red. PROBABLE S.P: 5/4

SCOOBY DUCHESS

The oldest finalist but retains all her ability. Reached the final of the Oaks in late November and was again a semi-finalist last year. Incredibly, she is now in another final confirming her standing as one of the Owner: most consistent bitches in training. Ahead of her Oaks challenge, she Breeder: reached the final of the Supersprint at Cork. Blessed with superb early Trainer: dash and real consistency, she could outrun her odds. PROBABLE S.P: 6/1

BALLYMAC ART

Made a low-key start to her career but that changed ahead of the Oaks. Winning an A5 stake in a stunning 28.26 in early May, she booked her place in the bitch classic and the rest is history. Display- Owner: ing massive pace and power through the early rounds, she has been Breeder: one of the stars of competition, culminating in a brilliant standard setting 28.16 in the semi-finals. The youngest finalist and certainly one of the Trainer: main fancies. PROBABLE S.P: 11/4

RAHA MOFO

Steve Noble, England Miss EJ Whiting, Yorkshire, England Jennifer O’Donnell, Killenaule, Co. Tipperary

Liam Dowling, Ballymacelligott, Co. Kerry Sean Moran, Ardagh, Co. Limerick Liam Dowling, Ballymacelligott, Co. Kerry

Marrisa Molloy, Oughterard, Co. Galway Stephen Dunne, Freshford, Co. Kilkenny Murt Leahy, Ballyragget, Co. Kilkenny

One of only two ’19 whelps in the final, she has really found form in BALLYMAC MIRANDA recent weeks. Trained by Kieran Lynch, who won the Oaks in 2019 with John Quinn/ John Maher, Killmacdonagh, she is the rank outsider of the field but has been running Owners: Mallow, Co. Cork with real credit. Ahead of her Oaks challenge she reached the final of Breeder: Liam Dowling, Ballymacelligott, the Supersprint at Curraheen but her form gone an even higher level Co. Kerry Kieran Lynch, Tracton, Co. Cork since. She posted 28.29 in the second round and may need to repeat that Trainer: form. PROBABLE S.P: 20/1 This lady debuted here last November, posting a rapid 28.45, suggesting DROOPYS NEXTONE she was destined for big things. Her first big test came in the Cork Oaks Ray Hamilton, Derry, where she finished third. With the power to see out 550yds strongly, she Owners: Northern Ireland has a huge future and is a leading hope in tonight’s decider despite a Breeder: Sean Dunphy, Portlaw, wide draw. After stunning displays in the quarter and semi-finals, she Co. Waterford John Linehan, Blarney, Co. Cork must be respected and could possibly hand Johnny Linehan a second Oaks Trainer: victory. PROBABLE S.P: 3/1 This rapid improver is a member of a very fast litter and also the least TULLOVIN VITA (W) experienced runner in the line-up. A true wide seed, she is ideally James Wade, Co. Tipperary housed in the stripes. She has improved with each run through her short Owners: Breeder: Brendan Matthews, Newry, career and seems likely to stay further in time. She may be amongst the Co. Armagh outsiders in this contest but is capable of outrunning her odds as she is Trainer: James Wade, Co. Tipperary capable of going up well and can avoid any traffic on the inside of the track. PROBABLE S.P: 16/1
