Epsom 2.00

A really open race to kick off Derby day with the bookies pricing it up at 5/1 the field at the time of writing. I have had two bets in the race with MR BIG STUFF being my main hope. Richard Spencer’s colt was a tad unlucky last time out finding plenty of trouble in-running. He did well to finish just over 3 lengths behind the winner and should have plenty more to offer at this trip based on his two seconds prior to that run. With more luck in the run he will go well.

At a bigger price BOX TO BOX is improving all the time with the 10 furlongs seeing him win nicely at Salisbury last month. Claimer Harry Davies negates the penalty and I think he will outrun his odds here. The current favourite Blue Trail is the likely danger with the step up in trip likely to bring out plenty of improvement but he still has to prove himself at this trip.

Epsom 2.35

Really interesting renewal of this race and I think there is good value on offer here with MRS FITZHERBERT who beat the favourite at time of writing on her seasonal debut. She travelled really well and showed a good turn of foot to win nicely. I think the faster ground suits her and now the rain looks less likely Saturday she is overpriced at around 6/1 in the betting.

Bashkirova is half the price and may strip fitter for the run despite Haggas having his horses ready to go this season. There won’t be much between them again which is why I much prefer the selectoin at the prices. Cheveley Park also run Potapova here who is clearly classy but can be a tough ride. On her day she would be winning this but has to prove her temperament in the Derby atmosphere.

Epsom 3.10

Not a bad renewal of the Diomed Stakes and MODERN NEWS looks the one to beat. It was hard not to be impressed by his win at Windsor last month by over 4 lengths without really being asked for his full effort. He seems to be improving all the time and will be tough to beat here.

Mutasaabeq is the main danger after starting the season with two nice runs including a narrow defeat in the bet365 Mile at Sandown last month. Of the rest Finest Sound could be the one to make up the top 3 after a big run in Meydan back in March finishing second in the Jebel Hatta.

Epsom 3.45

The Dash is always the hardest race to call at the Derby Festival and this year’s renewal is no different. With the maximum field of 20 runners I am going to have two bets in the race. The first being Adam West’s LIVE IN THE DREAM who has really stepped forward with his last 2 runs winning easily over this trip on fast ground. He is up 7lb for the wins but still has plenty to come and will go well from stall 17.

Trainer Paul Midgley has a good record in this race and MID WINSTER should be primed for this race after winning nicely at Catterick last week. He won that a shade cosily so I was surprised to see him at such a big price for this and he could outrun his odds. Fine Wine is a danger to all of these after beating Raasel last month at York. He is clearly top class but carries 9lb more here and is drawn fairly centrally so I’ve had to take him on.

Epsom 4.30

There might not be any Group 1 winners in the Derby field this year but it looks highly competitive with not much to split most of the field. The Derby trials have thrown up plenty of impressive winners, none more so than DESERT CROWN. Sir Michael Stoute said he was only just ready to run when making his seasonal reappearance in the Dante. He won it so well for a horse that would have needed the outing and he made it look like the extra trip would only see him in better light. With improvement likely for the run he is the one they all have to beat.

In such a competitive field I am going to have an each way saver especially with the upsets over the years at big prices. I was pleased to hear Charlie Appleby say how much WALK OF STARS had improved mentally since the Lingfield Derby trial where you could tell he was still learning. He travelled really nicely at the track last week and I think he is overpriced, similar to last years winner Adayar. Stone Age and Nations Pride are dangers to my pair but I do feel they may not have as much scope for improvement.

Epsom 5.15

This doesn’t look like the best renewal and I think SOLENT GATEWAY will go well here. He started of the season losing out over course and distance by half a length. He will be fitter for his recent run and gets 5lb claimer Harry Davies onboard. If in the same form as that Epsom run he will go well if overcoming a lower draw.

Last years winner is the main danger, Midnights Legacy who only carries 3lb more than last years win and a draw of 12 looks handy at this trip. Of the rest Aaddeey could run well and has place claims.

Epsom 5.50

We cap of the Derby meeting with a 6 furlong handicap which is a bit of a puzzle as the draw is key. REGIONAL is a bit higher in the weights than I would usually back in this race but their doesn’t appear to be many good alternatives. His form over this trip is amongst the best on offer and from a draw of 3 he has to be thereabouts. He rarely runs a bad race and looks a solid each way play.

If Bergerac can bounce back from a below par run at York last time he will be the main danger. It was hard to find a reason for him not finishing his race the way he normally does so I had to go against him this time.
