Albuquerque Heat Mapping--Driving Teams

Description

Volunteer to be a Driver for the 2021 Albuquerque Heat Mapping Study

Our built environments affect the temperature of everything around us. Pavement, buildings, and shade all have an effect on the comfort and safety of our neighborhoods. Urban heat is an issue of safety and equity, and we need your help to better understand where our city needs to focus its climate mitigation efforts.

We need 12 drivers for each of our data collection sessions during the heat mapping study. Drivers will need to be prepared and informed to undertake this work. Drivers will also need to recruit at least one co-pilot who can provide directions and navigation to them during the heat study. This is a wonderful way to volunteer with a friend or your whole family and cruise the city while making a difference.

What we need from you:

First, we will need you to complete the required qualifications for this opportunity. Since you will be driving for this opportunity, the City needs to insure you while you are driving (which requires a City Operator's Permit). To do this, we will need you to:

  • Take the city's defensive driving course.
  • Undergo a background check.
  • Have a valid driver's license.

Next, we need you to learn how to use the data collection tools. The training video and knowledge check are located below. We will also have a training that you can attend, which we will send out to those who respond. You must either 1) watch the training video and complete the knowledge check or 2) attend the training session.

For the day-of study, please arrive at City Hall at the assigned time to receive and set up the data collection tools, drive the course assigned to you, and return to city hall after the end of the data collection period. Please plan to be early--our data will be compromised if we have people starting late.

If you would like to see the data we are building on, please check out our ArcGIS site.

This study is designed to take place during the hottest days of the year. We must have good weather for this event.

Preferred Date--July 9th

Shifts during this day are our preferred choice. If the weather is good, we will collect all of our data on this day and we will not need to collect data on July 10th.

Back Up Date--July 10th

If we are unable to collect data on the 9th, we will need to collect data on this date. If we undertake the study on July 9th, these shifts will be cancelled.
