Something Unexpected

Rate this book
A new, sexy standalone from #1 New York Times Bestseller, Vi Keeland.

When my grandmother found out she didn’t have long to live, she embarked on a crazy trip—jumping out of airplanes and scuba diving with sharks.

After I repeatedly voiced my concern, Gram blocked me—her own grandson—on text and social media, leaving me only her travel companion Eleanor’s number.

Eleanor started sending me pictures of Gram’s adventures. At first she seemed nice, but when I attempted to persuade her to talk some sense into her friend, she told me where I could stick my advice. After that, photos arrived with snarky comments, and Eleanor and I got into it on more than one occasion.

When I heard Gram’s upcoming plans were more dangerous than ever, I hopped on a plane.

Since I arrived late, I headed to the bar for a drink, figuring I’d surprise her in the morning.

To my delight, I met a gorgeous woman looking for a no-strings-attached night. Nora was just what I needed. She invited me back to her room, telling me to give her a ten-minute head start. But when I went to pay her bar tab, I realized how much she’d had to drink. As much as I wanted to ignore it, I couldn’t. So I stood Nora up.

I knew she’d be pissed, but I also knew I’d never see her again.

Except never came a little early. Namely, the next morning when I went to meet my grandmother and her evil-spinster friend. Because old Eleanor turned out to be young Nora from last night. And if I thought the woman disliked me before, that was nothing compared to how ticked-off she was now. Or how unhappy she was going to be that their party of two was about to become a party of three.

***potential spoilers***

delicious cover. this is one of the authors good ones, but i hate it because its S A D. 😭 i cant decide between two or four stars.

“Sometimes we find the right person at the wrong time. And we just have to trust fate.”

the story is about the Hs grandmother whos terminally ill and doesnt have long to live. she decided to spend the rest of her days living life to the fullest by embarking on a crazy trip with the h, something that the H doesnt agree on. the MCs dont know each other, but they become acquainted as the h keeps the H updated on his grandmas well being during their excursion. the MCs eventually develop feelings for one another, but the h insists that they CANT be more than occasional fuck buddies. little does he know, shes... 💔

the good:
— the first 60% to 70% is the perfect summer, beach read.
“You know, just because you’re hot doesn’t mean you can be rude. Maybe that works for you in the supermarket, but it won’t work with me.”

the MCs have that ‘i hate you, but i wanna fuck you’ dynamic. i got a kick out of them arguing and bantering. 🤣

“I like your honesty.”
“I like your jawline.”
His eyes gleamed. “You’ll like my big dick even better.”

— Gram is the toughest, coolest, most vivacious fictional grandma i know.
— the side characters are all lovely creatures.
“I would rather fall for you and get hurt than to never have gotten involved.”

the H falls first and is the main pursuer in the relationship.
— theres more chapters in the Hs point of view than the h’s.
— the male audio narrator for the H is Teddy Hamilton. 😍
— theres mentions of Harry Styles.

what i appreciate:

“My grandmother gave me many gifts during her lifetime, but the best one she gave me was you.”

touching, inspiring, and hopeful representation on what its like for someone to have their days numbered, how they can make the most of it, and how their situation affects them and their loved ones. :)

things i couldve done without:
— in the second half/last 30%, the story turns depressing. 😢
“Did you mean it when you said you will do anything I want?”
“Of course.”
Nora looked into my eyes. “Then I need you to let me go.”

the h keeps pushing the H away.
“I fucking love you, Nora. I don’t care how many days I get, or how much heartache it causes in the end, I will never regret loving you.”

theres a “third act” break up. 🤧

idk what to rate this book because i enjoyed it immensely, except for all the tear-jerking elements. 😩 ive noticed that Penelope Ward likes to dabble with OW/OM drama or dead ex trope while Vi Keeland tends to include old people or characters with health problems in her books. i would recommend Something Unexpected if youre looking for a vacation-esque summer romance thats a little bit more on the angsty, emotional side. 🙃

details some people who care might be curious about: (SPOILERS!)
— the H is a divorced single dad of a six year old daughter. the kid appears once or twice. meanwhile, the ex-wife is only mentioned.
— theres no OW drama, but the H goes on a couple dates with his lady friends after meeting the h. nothing sexual happens. its one of those ‘im here with a beautiful, sexy woman, but my cock craves you solely’ moments. 🙄
— one night during the MCs temporary (84 days) separation, the H drinks & dances his heartbreak away and gets propositioned, but he declines.
— the h was engaged once. theres no OM drama, but her ex-fiancé does make an appearance.
— the MCs kiss at 17% and have sex at 41%.
— the Hs grandma has pancreatic cancer and dies by the end.
— the h has Rhabdomyosarcoma and is on relapse when this book takes place. she hides it from the H and is ready to accept her fate. luckily, she receives a heart transplant at the last minute. the MCs get back together (HFN).

“Yes, I’ll marry you. How can I not? This is the second heart that’s fallen in love with you.”

SPOILER-FREE Something Unexpected, by Vi Keeland, completely blew me away. This book owns my heart. I want you to go in blind. Please don’t read any reviews unless they’re spoiler-free (like mine). Something Unexpected was somewhat expected. I always expect Vi’s books to be filled with her signature funny banter, memorable characters, heart, and heat. It was all of those things AND SO MUCH MORE! I didn’t expect all of the feels. Vi dropped kicked my heart and left me reaching for a tissue box. I sent her a tear-filled photo when I hit the last page. You will feel so many emotions while reading Something Unexpected. This emotion-packed romance is funny, steamy, and unique, and it will pull on your heartstrings, not letting go until the very end. I LOVED the ending. I have a good book hangover today in all the best ways. I wish I could unread, reread and experience it again for the first time. Vi wasn’t playing when she named the book Something Unexpected. Get ready to laugh, cry, swoon, and fall in love with this book. Something Unexpected made me fall in love with romance books all over again. Best of 2023!

Heart wrenching, heart shattering and heartwarming all in one book! Such a beautiful book filled with love, wisdom and inspiration! A lesson in life that all should abide by! I could list a number of reasons why this book was so incredible, but I highly recommend reading it, so that the same euphoria can be experienced! I wish I could hit a perfect ten for this book, highly rated and recommended!!Phenomenal work!!!

SOMETHING UNEXPECTED by Vi Keeland is a standalone contemporary romance told from both POV

Tropes:
✔️ hero falls first
✔️ heroine doesn't want a relationship
✔️ opposites attract

I'm thinking Vi has another best seller on her hands. She has once again proven her mastery of storytelling with SOMETHING UNEXPECTED, a beautiful romance that surpasses all expectations. This book is an absolute gem, taking me on a breathtaking rollercoaster of emotions & leaving me utterly captivated from start to finish.

From the start, I was completely engrossed in the lives of these characters, rooting for their happiness & eagerly devouring each chapter.

When Nora decided to help Beck's grandmother with her bucket list, she never expected him.

The chemistry between Beck & Nora is nothing short of electrifying, sparking off the pages & igniting a fire within the reader's heart. Their banter is witty & delightful, filled w/moments of playful teasing & genuine vulnerability.

Their story tugged at my heartstrings with both sorrow & warmth. The emotional depth & complexity of the characters make them feel like real people, & their journeys of self-discovery & personal growth resonate deeply. Beck's transformation from a reserved individual to someone who embraces life's adventures is beautifully portrayed.

Something Unexpected is an extraordinary book that deserves a place on every reader's bookshelf. Vi Keeland's masterful storytelling, combined with compelling characters, scintillating chemistry, & a profound emotional journey, creates an unforgettable reading experience.

This enchanting tale of love, discovery, and personal growth left me breathless, and its impact will linger long after the final page is turned. Prepare to be swept away by the magic of this story & allow it to leave an indelible mark on your heart.

He’s divorced with a little girl. The heroine is sick with cancer. All of this ruins this book for me.
I think this author loss someone or something most of her books have this in them and also something with a priest and death in someway.

Every moment is to be treasured💞

Something Unexpected is a multilayered experience.
I didn’t expect to be wholly consumed by these characters and this UNFORGETTABLE story.
I did not expect to cry with heart-wrenching sorrow.
I did not expect those tears to turn into such tears of joy.
However, I did expect this book to give me exceptional FEELs and I can say that it without a doubt gave me an EMOTIONAL ride. It’s a Vi Keeland book and she gives it good.
There isn’t a moment throughout this book that your heart doesn’t take on some form of an attack. Why?, because Beck and Nora’s story is a true triple threat:
❤️‍🔥HEARTWARMING,
❤️‍🔥HEART-SHATTERING
❤️‍🔥HEART-MELTING.

The connection between Beck and Nora is very alluring and enticing. The sexy times are so tantalizing and highly sensual.
Beyond the romantic aspects, this story has beautiful references to family, sibling relationships and friendship.
Don’t get me wrong, Beck will definitely be your next book boyfriend because he has all the dirty, naughty and possessive traits to earn this coveted title.🌶️🌶️🌶️

If your looking for that story that will TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY then look no further because Beck and Nora will have a DRAMATIC and MEMORABLE effect on your heart and soul!!!

I physically couldn’t put this book down. I NEEDED…my heart needed to know that these two characters would get their HEA.

The true testament of a great writer is having the ability to make the characters that share the pages of the stories she writes take life and become one with its reader. So congratulations Vi you definitely nailed it with this book!!🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻I can honestly say that Beck and Nora stole my heart, along with Louise. These characters are so intense, touching and profound, that’s what makes them so COMPELLING and RELATABLE.

“Something Unexpected” was the newest release by Vi Keeland. This is one of my favorite books of the year. I loved everything in this story. Nora and Deck story touched my heart in so many ways. I cried like a baby in some scenes. I was missing a good story by her.
Deck is an extraordinary man, with the biggest heart of the world.
Nora is a force of nature. She was a strong woman, it wasn’t easy to deal with a disease that killed your mother and one day will be you.
Louise conquered my heart. What a beautiful woman she is, even in her last days she tried to help Nora and Deck. A grandma always wants the best for her grandchildren.

Readers if you love beautiful love stories you will enjoy this one by Vi Keeland.

Vi Keeland's latest book has officially become my favorite of hers. It stands out as the kinkiest and most explicit piece of smut I've come across in her repertoire. With a Vi Keeland book in hand, I don't feel the need to dive into the blurb or sift through reviews beforehand. Regardless of the plot, I can always count on her work to be light-hearted, fast-paced, and devoid of unnecessary delays when it comes to the main characters' initial encounter. Her stories never fail to make me burst into laughter and provide the perfect escape when I'm in the mood for something entertaining yet not overly heavy or cringe-inducing. True to form, this story wasted no time in introducing us to Beck Cross and Nora right from the very first page.

Their first and many conversations (banter and bickering more like it) never ceased to make me laugh. Their arguments were foreplay for both of them. The fact that they never hid their lust from each other while also maintaining the no-acting-on-it policy was delightful to witness. When they did get together for their casual no-strings-attached relationship, it was unexpectedly delicious because i was not expecting this level of dirty-talk as well as kinkiness from Vi Keeland.

From the start, Beck wasn't entirely enthusiastic about their relationship being solely based on sex. If Nora had been looking for something serious and wasn't hell bent on it being casual, he would've no issues being serious with her. This aspect of their dynamic, seen through Beck's perspective, remained consistent throughout the story, which I found refreshing. It wasn't a typical casual-turned-forever story where its sex till 90% then out of the blue with minimal character development and relationship growth, they fall in love and head to the hea. No, this story was all about showing, not just telling.

What sealed the deal for me was the fact that it wasn't limited to just that, It became emotional, intense, and even ventured into uncertain territory, which left me feeling anxious. Yet, throughout their journey, Beck's personality surprised me. Despite his initial portrayal as a rich, handsome, and delightfully crude billionaire "alpha" male, he exhibited undeniable sweetness, care, and love like a cinnamon roll with a pleasant twist.

What's more wonderful about this story is that there's no third party drama and no unexpected ridiculous third act breakup. 🤘🏽

This just might be my favorite Vi book ever.

Beck and Nora are completely unexpected. They’re story is so beautiful it makes my heart skip a few beats. They’re fun, sweet, and loving. Since the first meet, their chemistry was sizzling.

This story is one for the ages with emotions pouring out of every page - I couldn’t get enough. Completely unputdownable. A re-read for years to come!

Good story by VK. Her newest romance that surprised me.
There's alot of angst in this enemies to lovers romance.
Nora and Becks grandmother are living their bucket list to the fullest.
Nora meets Beck and is unaware he's her grandson.
The only thing I didn't like was swimming with dolphins. Really Vi?. I thought we were done with that. I'm an animal lover, so I didn't care for the swimming with dolphins.
Other than that it was not a bad romance.

Wow this one was really, really good and honestly completely unexpected 😉 I was totally charmed from the start, Beck and Nora had great chemistry and fiery banter always gets to me and theirs was so fun. The premise was adorable too and the unlikely friendship between Nora and Beck’s grandma, Louise was amazing. As much as I adored Nora and Beck’s relationship I enjoyed Louise and Nora’s just as much, these two cracked me up so many times and they also tugged at my heartstrings. There was a surprising emotional component here that about killed me but that’s all I want to say, I don’t want to spoil anything. Overall this one had everything for me, lots of romantic and sweet moments, plenty of spice, great family relationships, incredible characters and an emotional journey I won’t forget.

First and foremost, Beck’s grandmother Louise is absolutely everything, she’s one of the most lovable and enjoyable characters that I’ve ever read and she’s truly the highlight of this book. Something Unexpected is a brilliant and fantastic book that has an excellent balance of hilarious banter, emotional, sweet and sexy moments. Beck and Nora’s story is uniquely written, it’s all consuming, heartwarming and without a doubt, one of my favorite Vi Keeland books.

Grab ahold of your knickers and hold on for a fun ride. When Beckham’s granny goes on a wild cross country trip for fun and excitement with her companion, Eleanor, he could not stop her. After granny blocked him, Beck has been trying to catch up with her and her crazy companion. Well, that’s until he realizes her companion is none other than a young lady he already knows. From a flirty night at the bar! Can these two get along and let granny have the best trip of her life? Will something a little more spark between these two strong willed individuals? What a sweet and fun filled romance with a big emotional twist about opposites attracting and learning to make every day count. Have a few tissues ready as you’ll need them. A very touching romance. Told in dual POV

You don’t feel the heart in Ve’s writing anymore.

She spends too much time writing about other circumstances in the book rather than working on the main characters connection and chemistry.

What once was a book full of witty banter and laughing out loud moments and an off charts chemistry is now overload with angsty and heartbreaking issues and a dull and boring romance.

I keep reading her in hopes I will find her old writing back but I don’t think I ever will. They’ve become a formula.

Oh, my feels. This fun, sexy, surprising and emotional read was a rollercoaster that I wasn’t expecting, but it’s a gorgeous read with a great romance, and I loved it.

Beck and Nora meet at a bar one night, and after some banter and back-and-forth, they end up sharing a sizzling night together. They both wrote it off as a one night stand, until Beck learns that Nora is actually ‘Eleanor’, a woman travelling with his terminally ill grandmother, Louise, helping her have some big adventures during her final months of life.

Beck and ‘Eleanor’ have been angrily messaging back and forth for some time, as he is deeply unhappy with the unnecessary risks his grandmother is taking, and Eleanor’s role in that. She has been snarking right back at him and telling him to mind his own business. Now that they are face to face, they can argue in person, and they do… frequently. But with undertones of sexual chemistry as their attraction continues to sizzle.

It's a great dynamic, with Beck’s bossy uptightness providing a very entertaining contrast with Nora’s feisty and free-spirited nature. All while Nora and Louise are gallivanting around, having the time of their lives. It’s a bit of an enemies-to-friends-to-lovers situation, and with neither Beck or Nora interested in a relationship, their bickering foreplay and angry sex works brilliantly for both of them.

But when feelings become involved, and the reality of their situation sinks in, drama comes with it. It’s an emotional read, and I admit that I was surprised by the emotional intensity of it. This book made me cry more than once, and I loved the amazingly heartfelt love story that developed so beautifully in such difficult circumstances.

Despite the tears, this book had lots of fun moments, and some poignant messages, and I really enjoyed the story. Louise is so awesome, and Beck’s brother, Jake, is a hilarious scene-stealer, I’d love to read a story for him one day!

I listened to this as an audiobook, narrated by Teddy Hamilton and Andie Arndt, and they do a great job with it. This is definitely a good one to listen to.

I loved this book. 4.5 stars.

5 STARS!

Something Unexpected by Vi Keeland was an emotional, angst filled, and adventurous ride—one that had me wishing I could join!

Beck and Nora's chemistry is undeniable. They're linked by their love for Louise, Beck's grandmother. Beck didn't know what to do with this dynamic duo, aka "Thelma and Louise." Seriously, these ladies were two peas in a pod!!

Love, family, heat, and all the banter; this book had me laughing, swooning, and just feeling every single little thing! Also, I couldn't get enough of the secondary characters either. I was rooting for everybody—all of them!

With Vi's writing, you always get stories full of romance and heart, where it's just as heartbreaking as it is heartwarming! Be sure to check it out. This is another hit by this talented author!! 👏

Piękna opowieść, to taka Vi Keeland, jaką lubię, lekka, zabawna, a jednocześnie wzruszająca.

I had so many tears running down my face the last half of this book. The first half made me giggle and swoon. I wasn't prepared for the emotional ride it took me on. I am forever grateful I took the journey.

“Sometimes we find the right person at the wrong time. And we just have to trust fate.”

Every time Vi Keeland releases a book, it’s an automatic 1click buy for me.
Something Unexpected was more than a book it was a life lesson and gosh … I struggled at times as some topics are close to home but I couldn’t put it down.

The Incredible characters from Louise to Jack to Beck… will keep you glued to the pages.

Vi Keeland consistently writes flawless stories and Something Unexpected is no exception.
I mean Nora and Beck are pole opposite but together they are fire- Laugh-out-loud funny, devastatingly moving, and delightfully swoony.

I mean Beck and his bullet points had me LOL —- I was thinking where do I sign.. I’m in!! and his interactions with his brother Jake= comedy gold:

“I better get going. I have a double header tonight.” “You hate baseball,” Beck said. Jake grinned. “Who said anything about baseball? I have two dates. One I’m meeting for drinks at eight, and the other I’m meeting at the club at midnight.”

Beck, Maddie, first love … I LOVED IT ALL BUT BECK IS ONE OF A KIND, a man of my own heart.

“Love can’t be planned.”

Funny, poignant, full of insight . . . a triumph, Loved. Adored. All-star.’
