Brazil launches campaign to combat violence against women

The Ministry of Women, Family and Human Rights launched on Sunday (Aug. 7), the August Lilac Campaign to combat domestic violence against women. Its purpose is to promote awareness about physical, sexual, psychological, patrimonial, and moral violence.

Through open TV channels and social media, women will be instructed on ways to report aggression, such as by means of call centers, and on the rights provided for in the Maria da Penha Law - passed 16 years ago - which targets gender-based violence.

In Tocantins, Piauí, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Acre, states with the highest rates of femicide crimes, the campaign will also be carried out on the radio, on buses, and on billboards.

In São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Brasília, information will be disclosed in elevators of residential buildings, as well as in public means of transport.

The campaign emphasizes that all types of violence can be reported at no charge by calling number 180 at call centers.

“The entire population must pay attention to the signs, and listen, shelter, denounce,” minister Cristiane Britto said.
