Bombers “leading the race” ahead of other Victorian clubs for St Kilda free agent

2023-09-20T12:56+10:00

St Kilda free agent Jade Gresham could be on the move to a Victorian rival this off-season.

While the Saints are reportedly keen for the 26-year-old to stay at Moorabbin, Gresham has met with all of Essendon, Carlton and Richmond as he mulls his next move.

AFL Media’s Callum Twomey believes the Bombers are leading the race for the classy midfielder/small forward as he appears more likely to move than stay put at the Saints.

He discussed Gresham’s upcoming decision with Damian Barrett at the AFL Trade Radio launch where he revealed part of his decision-making could be to play in front of big crowds at the MCG.

Barrett: “Jade Gresham’s an interesting one.

“At one stage the Saints felt he was their best player, but injuries curtailed that and now he gets to this stage as a free agent.

“A few clubs have been looking, Carlton is one of them and Essendon is another.”

Twomey: “I think the Bombers are leading the race there, they’ve met with him.

“Richmond, as we reported last week, have met with him as well – you feel like that’s probably the more of the unlikely scenarios there.

“There’s obviously still an option for him to stay at St Kilda on a deal, obviously that’d be on St Kilda’s terms.

“He’s still got a decision to make, I expect him to move, it just depends to which of those Victorian clubs.

“He does have the pull to play at the MCG more in front of big crowds, that’s part of the pull for him so I think that’ll play into his decision-making.”

Gresham played 23 games in 2023 as he averaged 17.6 disposals, 0.9 goals, 3.4 inside 50s and 3.2 tackles a game.

He has played 136 games in the red, white and black since being taken at pick No.18 in the 2015 National Draft.
