Upward Bound Math and Science and Department of Biomedical Engineering host engineering outreach event for APS students

In a collaborative effort between Upward Bound Math and Science and the Department of Biomedical Engineering, 18 high school students from Akron Public Schools recently participated in an engaging two-hour outreach event held at the Goodyear Polymer Center.

The event featured hands-on demonstrations of biosignals in the human body. Students had the opportunity to engage in practical activities, such as measuring grip strength using a hand dynamometer and assessing muscle activity through electrodes and electromyography (EMG). These measurements served as the foundation for a unique and interactive arm-wrestling tournament.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering was represented by Dr. B. Audrey Nguyen-Rudy, assistant professor of practice, Dr. Hossein Tavana, department chair and professor, and a wonderful team of dedicated graduate students in biomedical engineering, including Hannah Combs, Davonn Henderson and Jacob Brown.

The event not only provided valuable insights into the fascinating world of biomedical engineering but also encouraged students to explore the diverse and exciting opportunities available at The University of Akron and within the field.

Upward Bound Math and Science is a federally funded TRiO program that prepares 9th - 12th grade students in targeted Akron Public Schools for postsecondary education.
