Oasis legend Liam Gallagher is teaming up with The Stone Roses’ John Squire for a new musical project.
The duo’s first single, ‘Just Another Rainbow’, will be released on 5th January 2024 and it can be pre-ordered now on 7″ vinyl.
JohnĀ says,Ā āTo me the most obvious take on āJust Another Rainbowā is that it’s about disappointment, and the sentiment is that you never get what you really want. But I don’t like to explain songs, I think that’s the privilege of the listener, it’s whatever you want it to be. To me, it’s also one of the most uplifting tracks weāve made together, which is weird.āĀ
LiamĀ adds,Ā āI think John’s a top songwriter. Everyone always bangs on about him as a guitarist, but heās a top songwriter too, man, no two ways about it as far as I’m concerned. There’s not enough of his music out there, whether it’s with the Roses or himself. It’s good to see him back writing songs and fucking good ones. The melodies are mega and then the guitars are a given. But I think even when you take all the fucking guitars off, you can play the songs all on acoustic and theyāll all still blow your mind.āĀ
The two stars were first in the same room back in 1989 when Gallagher was 16 and in attendance at a Stone Roses Gig at the International 2 in Manchester. They met four years later when they were both recording in Monmouth, Wales. Their friendship continued in the subsequent years, notably with the pair writingĀ āLove Me and Leave MeāĀ forĀ JohnāsĀ later bandĀ The Seahorses, who also toured as guests toĀ Oasis.
But it wasnāt untilĀ JohnĀ jumped on stage atĀ LiamāsĀ gargantuanĀ Knebworth ParkĀ show for climactic performances ofĀ āChampagne SupernovaāĀ that the prospect of working together on something more substantial became a reality.Ā John sent Liam three songs and then wrote more with the duo collaborating remotely and sending each other reference points.
Liam completed his vocals at John’s studio in Macclesfield, then the songs were completed over three weeks of sessions in Los Angeles with producer Greg Kurstin, who plays bass on the record, and Joey Waronker (Beck, R.E.M.) on drums.
‘Just Another Rainbow’ is the first taste of what’s to come from the duo.
