PA Profession Secures Passage of Licensure Compact Legislation in Seven States

It’s official – the PA Licensure Compact is now activated!

April 5, 2024

The PA Licensure Compact is officially activated following the signing of Virginia’s H.B. 324! Bills in Delaware, Utah, Wisconsin, Washington, West Virginia, and Nebraska were previously enacted and signed into law after the model legislation was released in November 2022.

“The speed at which states enacted the PA Compact underscores the need for greater efficiency in healthcare delivery as well as the demand for PAs,” said AAPA President and Chair of the Board Folusho E. Ogunfiditimi, DM, MPH, PA-C, DFAAPA. “This is truly a landmark accomplishment for PAs and their patients across the country. The ability to practice across state lines without requiring multiple licenses will be fundamental in ensuring PAs are never hampered from serving where they are needed.”

Why is the passage of seventh state bill significant?
After seven states have enacted the compact model legislation, the compact will be activated and begin the process to operationalize the compact and be able to give out privileges to practice.

What happens now?
The process to operationalize the compact will take anywhere from 18 to 24 months. Once operationalized, eligible PAs can then complete a single application to receive a compact privilege (which is equivalent to a license) from each compact state in which they intend to practice.

Are there compact bills still pending in other states?
PA Licensure Compact legislation is currently pending in 11 states.

  • Tennessee (H.B. 1862)
  • Colorado (S.B. 24-018)
  • Maine (L.D. 2043)
  • Michigan (H.B. 5117)
  • Minnesota (H.F. 2623 / S.F. 2394)
