The Mayor of Braga (Portugal) Ricardo Rio understands that transforming shared urban space can elicit strong reactions. However, Braga’s longstanding commitment to advancing sustainable mobility is rooted in its desire to improve residents’ quality of life. As the most recent winner of the EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK award, this Portuguese city is reducing pollution, improving quality of life, and increasing efficiency by expanding cycling infrastructure, opening streets for pedestrians, collaborating with local businesses, and engaging with community members to achieve these goals. We sat down with Mayor Rio to learn more about Braga’s sustainable mobility work.

Opportunity for towns & cities: CIVITAS Replication & Deployment Programme
The CIVITAS Replication and Deployment Programme has just launched a call for 12 Champion Cities. The selected twelve cities should have expertise in one of three topics: ‘accessibility and universal design,’ ‘sustainable urban logistics’ or ‘placemaking and participatory practices.’ They will support the take-up and transfer of knowledge to six pre-selected Challenge Cities by sharing their best practices and lessons learnt. Participation in the Programme will allow for travel to destinations like Istanbul (Turkey), Riga (Latvia) and Funchal (Portugal).

The CIVITAS initiative supports cities in gaining better access to innovative mobility solutions and in addressing challenges through activities like twinning sessions, co-creation workshops and site visits.

Applications will be accepted until 16 January 2024. Learn more here.
