Join us in congratulating our graduating ISIers! Basel Shbita, Ph.D. is earning his PhD in Computer Science, which he obtained under the supervision of his advisor, Craig Knoblock. Q: Why did you choose ISI? A: ISI uniquely combines industry and research with a focus on practical impact, and its groundbreaking work in information sciences and the web really intrigued me. Q: What’s the most impactful project you worked on at ISI? A: As part of my work on the CriticalMAAS (Critical Mineral Assessments with AI Support) project, I worked on the data integration piece, which was designed to compile rich mineral site data by harnessing AI and knowledge representation. Seeing the growing number of users of our resulting knowledge graph, which has become a pivotal tool for geologists navigating the surging global mineral demand, was highly satisfying. Q: What’s the best advice you have ever received during your time at ISI? A: Don’t just research where the light is brightest, around well-lit lamps of established knowledge, but to have the courage to light your own flashlight in the dark corners of unexplored territories. It's in those risky, unknown areas that true discovery and innovation lie. Following graduation, Basel is working as a Research Scientist at IBM Research! Congrats, #grad! #graduation #computerscience
